HELSINKI, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- It was the afternoon of Feb. 12 local time in the Confucius Institute classroom at the downtown University of Helsinki. Additionally, the students also brilliantly displayed their achievements in learning the Chinese language.Perhaps the most symbolic icon of the Spring festival is the dumpling, which would certainly feed the hunger of the students at the Confucius Institute for both food and knowledge.Juhani Riisio, a student at the University of Helsinki, called the dumplings "quite good to taste."The students knew that dumplings are always served during the Chinese Lunar New Year holidays, but making the food was a new challenge for them.The first time doing anything is never easy. However, it could be read from the students' actions and faces that they were doing their best.It seemed that they were making the dumplings as carefully and confidently as they were at learning Chinese.Hard work and eagerness to learn usually pays off. The students were soon able to made decent looking dumplings, though the taste was still waiting to be examined.As the experimental dumplings were cooked and served, delicious smells seemed to stuff the room. Anyone who wanted to know the results of the students' efforts could see nothing but gladness and comfort from the smiles of both teachers and students.The making of a dumpling may take only a couple of hours to learn but a culture could take a lifetime to appreciate. Small and symbolic as the little dumplings are, they help to shorten the distance between the western world and China, facilitating communications amongst different peoples. By learning from each other, it is certain that our tomorrows would be defined by mutual understandings instead of mistrust.

GUIYANG, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- The eight workers who were trapped Friday in a collapsed railway tunnel in southwestern Guizhou Province were rescued Saturday afternoon.Rescuers drilled a shaft leading to the trapped workers and took them out from the tunnel. BEIJING, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday denied government links to cyber attacks against the search giant Google, saying such accusations were "irresponsible and calculating.""China resolutely opposes the groundless accusations from Google," China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said, referring to Google's statement last month that it might pull out of the Chinese market, citing it services had been hacked by sources originating in China.Chinese laws prohibit cyber attacks and China's government does not tolerate cyber crime, and China welcomes international Internet companies to conduct businesses in China in line with the law, Qin told a regular new briefing"These firms have unblocked access to relevant Chinese government departments in terms of communication," said Qin, who stressed China's unchanged stance in promoting the development of the Internet."Foreign Internet enterprises, like foreign businesses of any other kind operating in China, shall abide by Chinese laws and respect its culture, "Qin said.Qin also said recent accusations of two Chinese schools carrying out cyber attacks against Google did not hold water.The New York Times has filed two reports recently claiming the cyber attacks on Google and other American firms last year have been traced to Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU) and Lanxiang Vocational School (Lanxiang) in east China's Shandong Province.Both Lanxiang and SJTU said the report was unfounded, and denied being behind the cyber attacks on Google and other American companies.

BEIJING, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security Tuesday urged police nationwide to take initiatives in cracking serious crime cases and solving social conflicts to ensure a safe World Expo in Shanghai.Vice Minister Huang Ming said police should seriously crack down on illegal activities, including illegal use of guns and explosives, kidnapping of children and women, gang-related crimes and online pornography.Police in Shanghai and its neighboring regions were asked to reinforce security measures and increase street patrols, and mobilize local residents to ensure a safe environment for the upcoming World Expo.Huang said the police should learn from Beijing's experience of successfully safeguarding the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in 2009.Police were also asked to visit grassroot level communities and villages to find prominent problems and help relevant authorities settle disputes.Shanghai's neighboring provinces, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Fujian, Shandong, Henan and Hubei, would reinforce security checks in air flights and trains, Huang said.Huang also urged the police to enforce the law in a reasonable and civilized manner and minimize disturbances to the public.The World Expo, to be hosted by China for the first time, will run from May 1 to Oct. 31. BEIJING, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Wednesday stressed the need for able Party officials at county and village levels for countryside development.     Xi, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks when meeting with the relatives of Shen Hao, former secretary of a village committee of the CPC, whom Xi described as setting up an ideal example for village officials.     During his six years as the Secretary of the Xiaogang Village Committee of the CPC in east China's Anhui Province, Shen led impoverished villagers to build roads, improve housing facilities and help increase villagers' annual income from 2,300 yuan (337 U.S. dollars) to 6,600 yuan per capita.     On Nov. 6, 2009, he died of heart attack at the age of 45.     He was posthumously honored with the title of "national outstanding CPC member" and "the people's civil servant."     Xi said Shen had left a great legacy as a modern CPC village cadre with his "loyalty and love, innovation and hard work."     He urged Party officials at county and village levels to learn from Shen and contribute to the building of the socialist new countryside
