LAKELAND, Fla. -- A 90-year-old Florida man who dressed in full protective gear to say goodbye to his wife, has died of COVID-19.In a Facebook post, Sam Reck's son-in-law shared the news that Sam has died.JoAnn Reck, Sam's wife of 30 years, died a few weeks earlier after battling COVID-19. She was 86 years old and Sam was 90.Sam Reck had been separated from his wife JoAnn Reck during the pandemic after the state placed a ban on visitors at nursing homes. JoAnn lived in a nursing home and suffered from dementia, and Sam lived in an apartment nearby.Family members said the couple would schedule socially-distant visits once Sam couldn't visit the home any more. LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — One in every five state and federal prisoners in the United States has tested positive for the coronavirus, a rate more than four times as high as the general population. In some states, more than half of prisoners have been infected, according to data collected by The Associated Press and The Marshall Project. As the pandemic enters its 10th month — and as the first Americans begin to receive a long-awaited COVID-19 vaccine — at least 275,000 prisoners have been infected and more than 1,700 have died. New cases in prisons this week reached their highest level since testing began in the spring, far outstripping previous peaks in April and August.“That number is a vast undercount,” said Homer Venters, the former chief medical officer at New York’s Rikers Island jail complex.Venters has conducted more than a dozen court-ordered COVID-19 prison inspections around the country. “I still encounter prisons and jails where, when people get sick, not only are they not tested but they don’t receive care. LAKE WALES, Florida — A 38-year-old man was arrested after being accused of shooting and killing another man on Thanksgiving Day in Polk County.Steven Nicholas Hunt, 38 of Winter Haven, is charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after fatally shooting Stephen Edward Roberts, 45 of Lake Wales, in his home, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.Deputies said they responded to Roberts' home on Lake Buffum Road in Lake Wales and found him with a gunshot wound to his head after receiving a call, at approximately 2:30 p.m., from a woman who said she had dropped off Hunt at the Circle K gas station located at 7695 Highway 60 East in Bartow after the incident.According to an arrest affidavit, the woman told deputies she and Roberts initially drove to Hunt's house to take him to Walmart and then went to Roberts' home in Lake Wales afterward. While at Roberts' home, she said she showered, went into another bedroom after seeing the two talking in the master bedroom and then heard what sounded like a gunshot.Hunt initially told deputies he went to the Circle K with the witness but did not know of what happened at Roberts' home. He then said he 'suddenly remembered' he was with Roberts in his home when he was shot. In the arrest affidavit, Hunt goes on to say that he was talking with Roberts in his bedroom when tried to hand him a handgun and asked him to 'put him out of his misery.' Hunt said eventually Roberts told him to leave and close the door and as he was walking away he heard a gunshot.Later, during a clarifying interview, Hunt gave another description of the shooting to deputies. He said Roberts' ask him to shoot him and then showed him how to use the handgun. Hunt told deputies he took the handgun from Roberts, as Roberts laid down and put a pillow over his head, and shot him in the head before putting the handgun next to him on the bed.Deputies said Hunt told them "he believed he fired another shot at Roberts," after the witness told him he was still breathing and asked him to help him."While most people in the county were enjoying a holiday meal with their families and loved ones on Thanksgiving day, a senseless murder was taking place in Lake Wales. Our deputies, detectives, and crime scene investigators worked throughout the day and well into the night on this case. We are grateful that this violent convicted felon was taken into custody swiftly and without further injury to anyone else. Our condolences go out to the victim and his loved ones," said Sheriff Grady Judd.Hunt's criminal history includes 16 previous felony and 10 misdemeanor charges; 7 felony and 6 misdemeanor convictions; and numerous previous arrests for battery domestic violence, resisting arrest, burglary, larceny, grand theft of a firearm, dealing in stolen property, possession of meth, possession of marijuana. His most recent arrest was November 7, 2018, for battery domestic violence. (KGTV) -- The family of a La Mesa woman says their mother in a medically induced coma after getting shot with a projectile that lodged between her eyes.Leslie Furcron was among thousands of people protesting Saturday night in front of the La Mesa Police Department. She was recording on Facebook Live. You can hear her yelling, then the phone drops, and the screen goes black."She was brutally attacked on a peaceful protest. If I commit a crime. I'm going to jail, no if's and or buts about it," said one of her sons, Ahmed Furcron.He says bystanders rushed her to the hospital. Her prognosis is unclear, but the family says she may lose an eye.Attorney Dante Pride is representing the family. Pride and other family members held a news conference outside the La Mesa Police Department Tuesday. "We are going to get justice. We will not be silenced, everyone who is watching this I want you to call the La Mesa police department and ask them what is that officer's name who decided he could attempt to murder a non-violent protestor?" asked Pride.Pride says the police department hasn't provided any information about what happened. The family believes she was hit with a rubber bullet or bean bag casing, but they're waiting for the hospital to confirm.During the news conference, a reporter said they had witness information that Furcron through a bottle, but the family says that is absolutely false."I have no evidence that she threw anything, she dropped a can when she got shot," said Pride."Even if she did throw a can, does she deserve to get shot in the face, that's all we want to know," said Ahmed.Pride also points to the La Mesa Police Departments' own training rules, which say bean bag munitions should not be aimed above the waist. "Why is supposed to be below the waist, a shot above the chest can be fatal," said Pride.La Mesa Police have refused to talk to the media about the incident. 1931
