LONDON (AP) — Some public health experts are criticizing the U.S. for securing a large supply of the only drug licensed so far to treat COVID-19. The U.S. government announced this week that it had an agreement with Gilead Sciences to make the bulk of their production of remdesivir available to Americans for the next three months. A senior lecturer at the University of Sussex called the U.S. agreement “disappointing news." Until now, the California-based Gilead had donated the drug. That ended Tuesday and Gilead has set the price for new shipments. Gilead is allowing generic makers to supply the drug to poor or middle-income countries at much lower prices. 672
LOS ANGELES (AP) — After weeks of stressing education over enforcement, California communities are issuing fines and relying on anonymous tips to make sure businesses and residents are complying with health orders amid the coronavirus pandemic. Los Angeles County, the state’s most populous, is averaging 2,000 reports a week on its tip lines with complaints ranging from a lack of hand sanitizer to improper cleaning of workplace bathrooms. California on Thursday reported nearly a half-million confirmed virus cases since March, the most in the nation, and 391 deaths were tallied over the last two days, the highest since the start of the pandemic. 659

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a tense political climate, California is taking an unusual step and warning local election officials to prepare for disruption at polling places and potential cases of voters being intimidated or blocked from casting ballots. In a memo this week, the Secretary of State's office reminded county election officials it is a felony for any person to possess a firearm at a voting location or in the immediate vicinity, unless authorized. It's also illegal to threaten anyone in an attempt to discourage them from voting. Secretary of State Alex Padilla says he expects a safe election, but local officials should be ready for any attempts to disrupt or interfere with voting. 702
