SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- On Wednesday, San Diego County health officials reported seven new COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the regions total to 406.Healthcare workers witness this firsthand; many have been by their patients' side during the final moments."We hold their hands, we let them talk to their loved ones through electronic devices," said Dr. Salam Yatooma, an internal medicine physician at Sharp Grossmont. "It's very painful, actually the most stressful thing for us doctors and especially nurses."In his twelve years at the hospital, Yatooma said he has never witnessed anything like this.Yatooma has been on the frontlines since the pandemic began, and while many people have let their guards down, he reminds everyone the virus hasn't gone anywhere. Healthcare workers haven't had a break."There has been an increase, a significant increase, in the number of patients of hospitalizations that we see," he said. "It's definitely correlated with the relaxing of restrictions that the state and county are implementing. People were not wearing masks. People continued to have large gatherings, especially indoors, and people were not socially distancing. Unfortunately, this is going to start to show more and more now."Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, said in the last seven days, there have been 24 community COVID-19 outbreaks.The latest outbreaks reported happened in a healthcare setting, a restaurant or bar, a gym, a daycare, and a resort or spa.The outbreaks in community settings are defined as three or more positive COVID-19 cases in people from different households.To date, there have been 17,842 positive cases locally, about 11 percent have required hospitalization, according to the county health officials.Yatooma said while most hospitalized patients he has seen are older in age with underlying health issues, over the last several weeks, there has been a new trend."We did notice there's been an increasing number in the younger people," he said. "20 to 40-years-old."He said he doesn't expect things to slow down at hospitals in the coming months as more people head out, especially during flu season."This is a very dangerous trend we're going into. In the coming few months that we start having the flu," Yatooma said. "Typically, we're almost at capacity when it comes to flu season; now we're going to have two storms coming."He said the ICU is currently at 85 percent capacity.Yatooma urges everyone to follow the simple steps that have proven to make a difference."Follow the local and state guidelines, socially distance, wear a mask, try not to touch your face," he said. 2637

SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) - Four students have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD).The district has since launched a dashboard on its website to inform the school community about any active cases at each school.“We’re just being very transparent and keeping families informed,” said Jenni Huh, the Director of Student Services for DMUSD.Two students tested positive for COVID-19 at Sage Canyon School, one student tested positive at Sycamore Ridge School, and another student tested positive at Torrey Hills School.“We received the results directly from the families, and we were able to respond very quickly,” said Huh. “I’m very happy to say that they are doing very well, and we have not had any other cases.”Huh said all students and staff who came in contacted with those who tested positive are quarantined for 14 days.“If we learned of a presumed positive case, we would treat it exactly as the same way that we would respond to a confirmed positive,” she added.Parents are also notified if their child was potentially exposed to someone who possibly came in contact with someone who tested positive.At Sage Canyon, parents learned of the two positive COVID-19 cases over the weekend.By Monday, students in the two impacted classrooms were able to transition back to online learning.They will continue online learning during the two-week quarantine.DMUSD Superintendent Holly McClurg said district officials developed a Safe Reopening Plan over the summer to respond to these situations. She said the methods worked as expected.“To see children not miss a beat with their instruction has been great,” she said.While many parents may still have concerns sending their children off to school knowing this could happen at any moment, McClurg said the district’s goal is to be transparent and work with families to make the transition back to in-person learning go as smoothly as possible. 1933

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Three healthcare-related offices were burglaries early Thursday morning, where criminals got away with cash and prescription pills. At 2:00 am, San Diego Police Officers arrived at the Cos-medic Inc. Plastic Surgery Clinic in Bankers Hill, to find a smashed glass window. They said burglars got away with an unknown amount of money. At 4:15 am, dispatchers sent officers to the Kaiser Permanente Pharmacy in Clairemont Mesa, after the front door was broken in. Nothing was taken. Just 20 minutes later, police said criminals shattered the back glass window at the Carmel Valley Pharmacy. The owners immediately contacted the local Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to notify that the burglars took 600 tablets of Adderall, worth up to ,000 in street value. "This is one of the drugs we see that are highly abused by high school and college students...What they perceive to be a study-aid," DEA Special Agent in Charge, Colin Ruane said. The Schedule-2 narcotic often lands in the hands of our youth, which can have deadly consequences. "In this country, we lose 70,000 people who die of drug overdoses every year," Special Agent Ruane said. "This is just another symptom of the major problem and the major addiction issue we have in the country. They wouldn't be stealing these drugs if there wasn't somebody willing to buy them."San Diego police said there appeared to be no connection between the burglary at the plastic surgery office and the others. However, after our inquiry, the Department said they are working with the DEA to look for a possible connection between the two pharmacy burglaries. (KGTV) - After serving active duty in the Marine Corps from 2013 to 2017, Cole Lawton pictured himself when he heard the news that nine service members had died in a routine training incident involving an AAV. Lawton said he has been inside an AAV and can imagine the terror those eight Marines and one Sailor must have felt in the moments when the AAV sunk.“I couldn’t help but imagine myself when I was in those amtracs if the same thing had happened to me … and that’s a nightmare,” he said.RELATED: Service members in deadly Southern California amphibious assault vehicle accident identifiedLawton also is a lover of the ocean and has a passion for diving, so he wanted to pay tribute to the nine lives lost using his skills. (KGTV) - San Diego County has given the green light on day camps reopening for the summer and some are moving forward, some are going virtual, and others have made the decision to cancel summer camp plans altogether.A major camp, the YMCA, has been making plans to reopen during the summer for the past few months, and a spokesperson said when they opened online enrollment, some camps filled up within half an hour. There are still camps available at all ten locations, though.“It’s showing us that there’s definitely a need and people are really excited for camp, which is great,” said Nat Corrall, YMCA Association Director of Child and Youth Development.She said they’ll be implementing the County’s rules, including practicing social distancing, taking temperatures upon arrival and keeping kids interacting only with their small group rather than a larger group. She said they already have more than 100 social distancing activities planned.“At the end of the day, it is still camp, it just looks a little different,” said Corrall.On the opposite spectrum, Outpost Summer Camps has canceled camp altogether. This camp, on average, sees 1,200 kids, with up to 1,500 in a good year. This year, they opened up registration January 1 and by the time they made the decision to cancel camp in April, already had around 600 kids enrolled.Outpost Summer Camps Executive Director and Owner Dr. Kelly Jones said they gave full refunds and are feeling the financial hit. She said they decided to cancel camp in early April rather than wait and take a risk because of the level of uncertainty. She also said their camp has a foundation of interactive games so a summer of social distancing wouldn’t be the same.“This was going to be such a new level of things that were unknown, uncontrollable and then really potentially unsafe,” said Jones. “It would just sound so sad to say ‘be apart, don’t touch each other, don’t be so close.’ That’s sad for kids. Usually we see kids together and we smile and we go aw and they’re holding hands and they’re arm in arm.”She said she and her husband typically donate ,000 to ,000 to a scholarship program to send kids to their camp but are unsure if they’ll be able to do that because of the financial hit this year. In response, camp families have donated ,377 to the fund to help send kids in 2021.Jones also said they typically increase fees year to year to make up for inflation, but they're not sure what they'll do in 2021. She did say they'll be redoing their terms and conditions for the refund policy.A third San Diego summer camp is taking a different step: moving online. Tech Adventure Camp has hosted camps featuring tech adventures, robotics, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and more in San Diego for about six years. Executive Director Dr. Korey Sewell said they knew the summer wouldn’t be normal in April and realized they would have to adapt. He said hands-on learning is important for tech education, so they’ve created a new type of program.“What if we had some experiences where we allow you to do the things at home and keep going at home?” he said.They created a virtual camp. Kids have at-home robotics kits to build. A portion of camp will be in a group video class, some will be one-on-one time with an instructor and the rest will be tutorial videos. He said this year, they’re also feeling the financial hit, but they hope to grow this virtual setting into a hybrid class that can be used in future summers.
