It’s been more than two weeks since federal workers, like Lila Johnson, have been to work.Johnson says it’s been hard, but she takes it day by day. At the age of 71, Lila works part-time at the Department of Agriculture as a janitor to supplement her retirement income. However, she's been out of work since December, because of the shutdown.“My biggest concern is when are we gonna go back to work. That's number one,” she says. “Number two is how I’m going to continue making ends meet.” For now, she has to rely on friends and family to help pay her bills and groceries. Because she's a contract worker, it's likely she will not get the back pay Congress usually gives to federal workers once a shutdown is over. “When I do go back to work, I’m still gonna be behind,” she explains. “I'm gonna have to work at least two months before I can see myself climbing out of the hole.” Other federal workers wonder what they'll do when they don't get paid this week. “I just bought a house,” says furloughed worker Christine Vitel. “I'm not gonna be able to pay my mortgage, so yes, this is affecting me personally. Once a week, Karelia Lanuza comes by Viola Zilio's apartment to help her with whatever she might need, whether it’s finishing a puzzle, helping with chores or reminding her to take her medications. She more of a companion, according to Zilio. The pair met when Lanuza signed up to work for Papa, a new app and phone-based service for seniors. "Papa connects college students to older adults for companionship, assistance, and transportation,” says CEO and founder Andrew Parker. “It’s kind of like a grandkid on-demand." Parker thought pairing college students with seniors could fill a void he saw. “My grandfather, who we call papa, needed help but wasn't really ready for traditional healthcare services, and I thought it was weird there was nothing available before that,” Parker says. “So, I thought it would be interesting to connect him to college student, and he loved it.” Lanuza is a sophomore pre-med student, and she needed a job that fit with her busy class schedule. A woman in Maricopa, Arizona, has been arrested, accused of physical abuse against her seven adoptive children. Maricopa police say that on March 13, an adult woman came to their department and said her mother, 48-year-old Machelle Hackney, had been abusing her siblings.According to a police report, she said the siblings were left in locked closets for days at a time, pepper sprayed and left with no food or water for days on end by their adoptive mother.Police went to the home and allegedly found a child in a closet wearing a pull-up diaper and no other clothing. The closet had a lock on it, but it was not locked at the time. Police say they children appeared pale, underweight and had bags under their eyes. One of the children told police they were pepper sprayed numerous times as punishment by his mother, among other physical abuse. "I either get beat with a hanger or belt, or a brush, or get pepper sprayed from head to toe.” The others described similar abuse, including abuse to their private parts and being forced to take ice baths. Police also say the children were also forced to participate and “act” in a popular YouTube series that Hackney filmed in their home. Several of the children said if they forgot lines, or tried not to participate, they would be physically abused as punishment. Police interviewed one of Hackney’s adult sons. Logan Hackney said he and his brother Ryan discussed reporting the abuse, but never did. Logan allegedly admitted to knowing about the physical abuse, and said they would sneak the children food when possible. When questioned, Machelle Hackney "denied the pepper spray, denied the ice baths and stated the only forms of punishment she uses is having to stand in the corner, getting spankings and being grounded,” according to police paperwork. Logan Hackney and Ryan Hackney were booked into Pinal County Jail for seven counts each of failing to report abuse of a minor.
