SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A UC San Diego fraternity was suspended as the school investigates multiple sexual assault allegations against some of its members. According to a report by The UCSD Guardian campus newspaper, at least four female students claimed they were sexually assaulted by members of the Sigma Chi fraternity in incidents over the course of the academic year. Details of the accusations came to light during sorority meetings last month, where chapter residents read written accounts from the alleged victims. An anonymous student who was at one of the meetings told the school newspaper that one woman claimed she was drugged at a Sigma Chi party when a fraternity member handed her a spiked drink that rendered her unconscious. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman bought a puppy for her kids. Four hours later, it was dead. Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner spoke to local veterinarians who say that a new state law is, in part, to blame. “It was beautiful. It was sweet,” says Enjoli Spaulding of her former Golden Retriever puppy. The San Diego mother of three had been looking for a family Golden Retriever for some time. She checked with formal breeders but the prices were high. “Those dogs are about ,500, minimum,” she tells us. Then she found an adorable Golden Retriever puppy for 0 on a buy-sell website called Recycler.Spaulding, along with her mother, Kathy Pardini, met the seller in a parking lot.“[The puppy] seemed like it had been very loved,” says Pardini. Spaulding adds, “She gave me a vaccination record. She also gave me a bill from the vet when the dog had a physical exam.” The deal appeared to be legitimate, so Spaulding handed over the cash, and they went to surprise her son at school. “He said, ‘Mom, you got me a dog! My very own dog!’ He was just over the moon,” she tells us.The family took the puppy home and played with it in the backyard. “My daughter got her tea set ready,” says Spaulding. Then the playtime took a terrifying turn. Parvovirus suddenly wreaked havoc on the puppy’s bowels and it was bleeding. The puppy was rushed to the hospital, where he was put down. The family was devastated. “The vet told me the dog had been sick for a long time. This was not a new situation,” she tells 10News.“It was surreal,” adds Pardini.Spaulding says the seller would not return her calls. She also discovered that the puppy’s paperwork from the seller was apparently forged. “It was a completely fake document,” she says. She has since filed a police report.Dr. Scott DiLorenzo is a veterinarian and owner of Escondido's Animal Urgent Care. “We have seen an uptick in these cases,” he tells 10News. He says a new California law is part of the problem. It bans pet stores from selling dogs, cats and rabbits, unless they come from shelters or rescues. The law was intended to stop harmful breeding operations like puppy mills. Yet now, consumers aren't always sure where to turn to for specific breeds that they want. “There's just limited sources for people to go out and get the breeds that they want so they're turning to unvetted websites,” adds Dr. DiLorenzo.The American Kennel Club writes, in part, to 10News, "The uptick in this trend corresponds precisely with the implementation of California's new ban on the sale of purpose bred pets at regulated pet shops…”San Diegan Lisa Hexom says she got scammed with a sick dog, too. “I don't want to lose him,” she cries from the veterinary hospital. Max became deathly ill just five days after she bought him for 0 from a Craigslist seller who she met in Carlsbad parking lot.Hexom later learned that the shot records given to her were fake and the seller has gone dark.The American Kennel Club says the U.S. Department of Agriculture is in charge of licensing breeders. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A teacher at a middle school in Vista says a look inside her classroom reveals her concerns about the lack of social distancing.Laura Whitehouse’s classroom at Rancho Minerva Middle school. The history teacher has been at the school for seven years, and for the first time, she is anxious about going to school."It’s frightening. It’s frightening," said Whitehouse.She says her fears stem from the lack of social distancing. Her classes have 34 kids, with two kids sitting at each table right next to each other."Distance between each table is about two feet. They’re just on top of each other," said Whitehouse.Whitehouse says the kids are supposed to wear masks, but she sometimes has to remind them to put their masks on, and to maintain social distance."They want to clump together. They want to go to each other’s desk," said Whitehouse.After a few days of in-person learning, Whitehouse on Tuesday received plexiglass for her desk and a HEPA air purifier, but she worries it’s not close to being enough. She says there’s no cleaning between classes, as new students rotate in."The germs that are accumulating are just crazy," said Whitehouse.Amid her concerns, there have been at least four positive COVID-19 cases in the Vista Unified School District, sparking new rules about what will trigger a school to revert to distance learning.Whitehouse, who has asthma, says the new rules don’t address what’s putting her and her students most at risk."I am afraid for them. I just want them and their families to be healthy," said Whitehouse.She’s hoping for more cleaning, and more hybrid learning to reduce the number of kids in the classroom."The fear is this is just going to continue to get worse," said Whitehouse.The teachers union tells ABC 10News they are preparing an OSHA complaint detailing the classroom conditions. Superintendent of Schools Matt Doyle emailed ABC 10News the following statement:"... We have spent more than 2 million dollars on personal protective equipment for our staff and schools. These include facemasks, face shields, gloves, plexiglass barriers for teachers and students, HEPA air filters, additional outside sinks, electrostatic disinfecting machines, posters, and more. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman's trip to Mission Bay ended with her, and her car, soaked.The woman, who identified herself as Candy, said she was next to her car on a boat ramp preparing to unload her kayak for a day of fishing and roaming around Mission Bay. Suddenly, her 2002 Audi convertible started rolling as she was unloading gear.Candy jumped into the car and road it into the bay as she tried to get her emergency brake to engage."It just wouldn't. It just kept on going," Candy told 10News. "I was standing straight up in it as it was going down ... quite a scene, I'm sure."The car started sinking into the bay with Candy still inside, before she jumped out to swim back to shore. Her lunch and kayak floated to the other side of the bay as her car became completely submerged, she told 10News."I'm going to have plenty of fish now," she joked. "It's not a big deal, things happen."Two tow trucks were able to fish Candy's vehicle out of the bay and San Diego Lifeguards retrieved her car and kayak, in which she had left her purse and lunch.Candy said she had just purchased the car in November.San Diego Lifeguards reminded locals to exercise caution while using boat ramps. 1216
