During Xi's visit to Chile, China and the Latin American country decided to initiate negotiations on upgrading their free trade agreement (FTA) as soon as possible.
Ecuador is the first stop of Xi's three-country Latin America tour. He will travel on to Peru, where he will also participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting, and then to Chile.
The FTAAP process was launched at the 2014 APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Beijing with the endorsement of a roadmap. A "collective strategic study" was conducted subsequently, as agreed by the APEC members, and the result should be reported to the economic leaders by the end of 2016.
Xi stressed that the Paris Agreement ushers in a new phase of international cooperation on fighting global warming.
