Oprah Winfrey and Lionsgate are partnering with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones to adapt The New York Times' 1619 Project for film and television. Lionsgate said Wednesday that it will work alongside "The 1619 Project" architect Hannah-Jones to develop a multi-media history of the legacy of slavery in America for a worldwide audience. OLATHE, Kan. — A group of Kansas students is working to lower suspension rates in school by lowering the suspension on cars. And the teens have now teamed up with local police to make it happen.Adrian Vilches, also known as "Shorty," sat down with KSHB to discuss a tall task. His mom was even in a state of shock over this. "Honestly she started crying. She didn't believe I would make it to work with cops in this kind of way," Vilches said.Vilches and several other teens expressed excitement over a new partnership with the Olathe Police Department. Erik Erazo is the brainchild behind this club. He currently serves as the migrant director and Hispanic student advisor for the Olathe School District. “We started a club in 2016 with a few lowrider bikes we were building,” Erazo said.Erazo said that’s how the Olathe Lowrider Bike Club got off the ground. “Lowriding, as far as a lot of people are concerned, it’s a car, it’s hydraulics, it’s paint, it’s murals and it is all of that," Erazo said. "But lowriding to us is a lifestyle. It’s kind of our Chicano way of living, Hispanic-American way.”The students spend a few hours a day every week turning bikes into something much more. They did such a good job “tricking out” the bikes, the Olathe Police Department got in on the fun. The department donated an old squad car to be converted into a lowrider. “It’s gonna have all the bells and whistles,” said Sgt. Logan Bonney.  “And we’re gonna give them [the students] the ability to make it their own.”Vilches agrees that the program offers so much for the students. “If I didn’t have the program, I’d probably be doing something dumb right now. Probably in the back of a police car, but now this is what keeps me moving forward," said Vilches.Christian Gutierrez is another student who sees the many benefits of the program. In addition to learning about cars, he’s also building a relationship with police he never imagined possible. “We’re trying to change that relationship," said Gutierrez. "The black and brown side have always had a bad relationship with police and we’re trying to change that”The teens have placed their work on display at car and bike shows across the Kansas City metro area. They eventually want to help and donate to other kids in need. Perhaps what’s most impressive is that every high school senior in the program last year graduated and is now in college. “I did not ever believe in a thousand years I’d be working with cops or anything,” said Vilches. "And now look at us here. We’re working together, making a better community.” It’s a program the Olathe Police Department wants to continue for several years. “It’s a way for us to really get out to the community in a different way,” said Bonney.  “You don’t build relationships during a crisis. You build it beforehand.”Materials used for the Lowrider Club are funded by donations via the Olathe Police Foundation. If you’d like to help out, click here. 3104

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — A vehicle slammed into a power pole in Oceanside and flipped over early Monday, leaving locals without power and forcing some evacuations.The driver careened into the power pole in the 220 block of N. El Camino Real at about 3:30 a.m. The driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries.The power pole remained upright but was leaning over a nearby mobile home park, threatening some homes. Those homes have been evacuated and power to most of the park has been shut off.SDG&E crews were out to assess the damage Monday. The outage affected at least 180 people. Crews expect to restore power by 4 p.m.It's not clear what caused the driver to lose control. The driver reportedly told Oceanside Police they were trying to avoid hitting a coyote. 785

OCEANSIDE (KGTV) -- Multiple customers said a North County rental company refused refunds during the pandemic and only offered a full credit toward a future stay in exchange for removing negative reviews online.Lisa Janson is one of those customers. She lives in Pennsylvania and was excited for her March trip to California with college friends. Janson was first planning to stop in Palm Springs to spend time with her son and his family before driving to Oceanside.Once in San Diego County, they planned to stay at a property managed by Beachfront Only. The company operates several rental properties along the coastline.As the situation with the Coronavirus worsened, Janson canceled their March trip. They were able to get refunds on their flight and Airbnb in Palm Springs; however, she said when it came to their rental, Janson said the business did not budge. "I was just absolutely shocked. I was dumbfounded," Janson said.She first asked for a refund on March 10. She said all those traveling were older than 65-years-old. One of her friends also had a doctor's note, urging her not to travel because of her compromised immune status. Even with that information, Janson said Beachfront Only would not make any exceptions.She lost more than ,000. Others contacted Team 10 about similar experiences with Beachfront Only. One San Diego man said he lost more than ,500. Another woman said she had to cancel her wedding due to the pandemic. Beachfront Only was the only business not to issue a refund. She lost more than ,000.A week and a half after Janson first reached out to Beachfront Only, she said the company offered her a deal."We're going to offer you a 50 percent credit toward a future rental," Janson said. "This was probably our 10th email back and forth. The idea of renting with them…. I don't trust these people!"On April 6, Janson said the company decided to offer 100 percent full credit towards a future stay contingent upon removal of any negative reviews that may have been posted, and the bank dispute has been canceled." "It just pisses me off," Janson said.When you visit Beachfront Only's Yelp page, a "consumer alert" warning pops up saying Yelp "caught someone red-handed, trying to pay someone to write, change, prevent, or remove a review for this business." Team 10 spoke to three people who said Beachfront Only offered 100 percent credit on a future stay only if they removed a negative review.Legal analyst Dan Eaton said a business compensating someone to remove a negative review is not illegal, but could have long-term effects."Businesses should understand that what they do will have a reputational tail that lasts many months, maybe years beyond the pandemic. People are going to remember what businesses have done," Eaton said.Beachfront Only did not respond to Team 10's calls and multiple emails. "I'm not wishing anything bad on them.
