(AP) — A group recommending a new Mississippi state flag has chosen five final designs — three with a magnolia blossom, one with a magnolia tree and one with a shield that has wavy lines representing water. Mississippi legislators recently retired the last state flag with the Confederate battle emblem that’s condemned as racist. By law, the new design cannot have the Confederate emblem and must have “In God We Trust.” Mississippi was the 20th state, admitted into the Union in 1817, but the finalist designs have 21 stars to include the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and other indigenous people.After getting hundreds of submissions, the flag comission narrowed the field to nine designs and asked the public to weigh in via an online vote. Commission Chairman Reuben Anderson noted Tuesday that more than 48,000 people voted, according to MississippiToday.com.“That shows Mississippians have a tremendous amount of interest in what we’re doing,” Anderson said. “We’re not going to disappoint them. We will put forth the greatest flag we can have.”The five final designs will be made into flags, and those will be flown Aug. 25 in Jackson. KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A father and daughter have been charged in connection to an assault of a Ruskin (Missouri) High School student. PREVIOUS STORY: Student critically injured in altercation with parent at Ruskin High School, police sayJosiah S. Wright, 38, faces first-degree assault charges. Jonay L. Wright, 17, faces second-degree domestic assault charges. According to court documents, police arrived at the south Kansas City school on Tuesday around noon. Witnesses told police that Jonay Wright and her father kicked and hit the victim in the head and body. Another witness told police that the father stomped on the victim’s head while the daughter kicked him. Court documents say Jonay Wright is the victim’s ex-girlfriend. The victim was identified as 18-year-old Cullen Landis by Wright's family members.   853

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police shot and killed a man who fired at officers outside a burning Kansas City home early Monday morning. Investigators said they later found a woman dead inside the house, after first discovering a dead woman outside, according to KCPD.A police spokesperson said several people were involved in a shooting around 2 a.m. In an update at 4:45 a.m., police said officers shot and killed an "active shooter" outside the home.“The suspect came out the house, fired shots at the officers who returned fire, stopping the suspect. The house started smoking. The fire department put out the fire and discovered another body,” explained Captain Lionel Colon with KCPD.Police said the house fire appeared to have been set intentionally but did not provide details on whether it was related to the shooting.It was not immediately clear how the victims died or what led up to the shooting. Police did not immediately identify anyone involved in the incident.A woman who identified herself as the aunt of the man police killed told 41 Action News her nephew killed her niece and the mother of his child. Even eight hours after the shooting, crime scene tape covered a block in each direction around an intersection, not far from the Truman Sports Complex. At one point, police had tape tied to Sarah Jones’s home. She said she got home late from work Sunday night and was still awake when gunshots erupted. She called police and a few minutes later heard another round of gunfire. “I got the kids, told them to get to the lowest point of the house. We were trying to get down to the basement just crawling across the floor. Judge Amy Coney Barrett's Supreme Court confirmation hearing was beset by technical issues on Wednesday afternoon, as the Senate Judiciary Committee was forced to take two recesses when microphones in the room went dead.The issues began at 2 p.m. ET, about five hours into day two of questioning. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut, was in the process of beginning his 20 minute period of questioning went microphones stopped working.The committee went into recess for about half an hour as Capitol maintenance workers attempted to fix the issue. Upon returning, Blumenthal was able to get through most of his questioning session before microphones in the room cut out again.The committee was forced to take another 15-minute recess to address the technical issue.It's currently unclear as to what caused the issue. 827
