Authorities in New York have closed a preschool in Harlem after a 3-year-old boy died from what family members say was an allergic reaction.According to a verified GoFundMe page set up by a family friend, Elijah Silvera went into anaphylactic shock on Friday, November 3rd after he was given a grilled cheese sandwich by an adult at the school, "despite them knowing and having documented that he has a severe allergy to dairy." The toddler was taken to Harlem Hospital where he died, the website said. The New York City Health Department said in a statement that it had temporarily closed the school, the Center for Family Services, which is a part of the city's universal pre-K program. The department is "continuing to aggressively investigate what happened and whether the facility could have done something differently to prevent this tragedy," the statement said."There is nothing more important than the safety of our children and we are deeply saddened by this tragedy. We will get to the bottom of what happened here," the department said. The Center for Family Services did not respond to multiple CNN calls for comment."The safety and well-being of children in our EarlyLearn centers is critically important," NYC Adminstration for Children's Services tweeted Thursday. "Following a critical incident at any of our EarlyLearn centers, we place the provider on heightened monitoring or a corrective action status."A health official, who asked not to be named, told CNN the Center for Family Services has been closed for "failing to follow its written safety plan and failing to adequately supervise a child, in violation of the Health Code."Officials say the most recent inspection of the school occurred on September 21, 2017. No violations were cited."The tragic loss of Elijah Silvera did not have to happen," the child's family said in a statement through their attorney, Nicole Weiser. "The failure to follow long established protocols by both the pre-school and by Harlem Hospital resulted in this monumental loss for the Silvera family."According to the GoFund Me page, a portion of the funds raised will be donated to "FARE" Food Allergy Research & Education, "the largest nonprofit working on behalf of the food allergy community. "As of Thursday evening, the page has received ,510 of its k goal. 2332

BALTIMORE — Scammers are using the COVID-19 pandemic and financial crisis to take advantage of unemployed workers.Like millions of others, Daniel Martin recently lost his job, but he caught a break with a new company.“I was really excited. It sounded like a really good position with a lot of possibilities of growth within the company. It just seemed like something I was looking for,” said Martin. He received a contract and was assigned a project. The company, Gap Systems LLC, was moving their offices to Baltimore and needed him to procure new equipment. Since he wasn’t full-time just yet, he’d have to purchase the laptops with his credit card and the company would reimburse him.“The next two weeks, I completed a total of three purchase orders and all of the payments were posting perfectly fine,” Martin said.A few weeks later, the charges suddenly reversed and Martin’s credit card balance exceeded ,000.After speaking with a bank representative, he learned the account owner had reported the charges as fraudulent.“They probably in some other way scammed someone else to get their account and routing number and then they gave me that information to pay my credit card,” said Martin.Martin feels he should’ve known better, but his excitement clouded his judgment. And this is happening to job hunters around the country. According to the Federal Trade Commission, consumers reported losing 0 million to these scams in the first nine months of 2020.This week, the FTC along with 19 federal, state, and local law enforcement partners, announced a crackdown on scams targeting consumers with fake promises of income and financial independence.More than 50 enforcement actions were taken against operators of work-from-home and employment scams, pyramid schemes, investment scams, bogus coaching courses, and other schemes.“If at any point during any part of the process they ask you to buy anything, just don’t,” said Martin.Especially with checks. It’ll likely bounce then you’re on the hook for that money. And if someone contacts you about a j

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Musicians across the country performed for voters to bring unity and hope in a divisive time."Music is therapeutic," said professional saxophonist Christopher King. "It's like that one time that we can all come together whether we're Democrat or Republican."After months of divisive politics, King and other musicians came together through Play For The Vote. Their mission: lift worries and burdens from voters' shoulders and create a different feeling at the polls this Election Day."With everything we've been through since the beginning of this year, you can turn a negative into a positive," said King of this moment in history.Poll workers across Atlanta expected crowds of voters lined up around the building, but the day was quiet. The average wait was under five minutes. For musicians Ally Jenkins and Brian Raddock, performing on Election Day, even to a small crowd, was a moment of triumph, especially in a time where their life’s work has been slipping through their fingers."It's been a nightmare," said Jenkins, a violinist. "Everything was canceled within like three days of each other, and this is tens of thousands of dollars of income and also our purpose for living."Her longtime friend and fellow musician, Brian Raddock, feels her pain. "Devastating is putting it lightly, and in a lot of ways, and it's just because we're both freelancers. It's really show to show," he said. These two have played on Broadway and across New York City until COVID-19 shut their livelihoods down."I feel the most alive when I'm playing music, and to not have that with other people, it's it just kind of makes you feel a little bit lost when you're having to do it by yourself," said Raddock. But Election Day brought back a glimpse of normalcy. "To see some people smile while we're playing music and to use art to really help bring some more beauty into the world, I can't really even describe what it means. It's just wonderful," said Raddock.Their audience, mostly poll workers, agreed. "It was fun. It lifted your spirits to hear them. They're so talented, they're so good, and then to hear their plight, that's just something you hadn't even thought about," said Pattie Harris, an election volunteer.Thousands of musicians across the country are experiencing the same struggle. That’s why so many came together for Play for the Vote. Hundreds of artists volunteered across 48 states to play for voters, but also to start a movement lasting far beyond this year’s election."Music is the one universal language. There's just really a power of connection, that we can communicate, yet not know each other. I just hope that they walk away with a reminder that art and music is something that is a connector between all of us through all of our differences," said Raddock.A connection needing just one smile, just one look for these musicians to know: their life’s work is worth the fight. If you'd like to help support musicians struggling during the pandemic, you can help through Play for the Vote or through the Music Workers Alliance. 3066

BALTIMORE - Food safety experts are warning parents to be mindful when packing perishables like sandwiches and yogurts in your child's lunch.Tanya Brown with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) said you're looking at a two-hour window before those brown bag lunches become breeding grounds for bacteria.“You should not put perishable items like bologna sandwiches, turkey sandwiches, cheese or yogurt in a brown paper bag and send a child to school with it,” Brown said.Foods can hit the "danger zone," or temperatures between 40-140 degrees Fahrenheit, when it’s left out of refrigeration over two hours. After four hours, the food item should be tossed.“You want to make sure you put them in an insulated lunch bag with at least two cold sources and those two cold sources could be a frozen water bottle or frozen juice packs or gel packs in there. So, you want to put those perishable items in there and make sure the child does not open the bag and keep opening and closing the bag before lunchtime,” said Brown. If you're sending them with something hot, use a thermos, and warm it up first.“The best way to prepare it is to pour boiling hot water into the thermos first, then discard the hot water and then put the hot soup or stew in there. Make sure it's at 165 degrees Fahrenheit,” Brown said. However, the leading cause of sickness is poor hand washing. Brown said this is an easy problem to solve:“Oftentimes, children don't get an opportunity to wash their hands before they go to lunch and just to trigger their memory put a moist toilette in there or some hand sanitizer to remind them before they start to eat their lunch,” she said.Click here for more information on the danger zone and safe handling of food. 1751

Authorities say a U.S. Navy training plane traveling from Florida has crashed in an Alabama residential neighborhood near the Gulf Coast, killing both people in the plane. Navy spokesman Zach Harrell says both people in the T-6B Texan II training plane died Friday. No injuries were reported on the ground. Foley Fire Chief Joey Darby told news outlets that responders encountered and extinguished a “large volume of fire” that had engulfed a home and cars. The crash occurred near the city of Foley and the town of Magnolia Springs. A Navy spokeswoman says the plane had flown out of Naval Air Station Whiting Field, about 30 miles northeast of Pensacola. 664
