But there's a possible health risk airline crew members call a stinky little secret.Crew members work to keep passengers safe and comfortable when flying but there's a secret they want you to know about in the cabin air. Flight attendants and pilots call it the "dirty sock smell."One flight attendant, who was granted anonymity for this story for fear of losing his job, says that smell sent him to the emergency room last summer."(The) smell kept getting intense, intense. (I) started to get light-headed, wanting to throw up," "Andrew" said. "For almost 15 minutes the smell just kept getting stronger and it didn't go away. That's when I felt extremely sick, light-headed and was hard to breathe."He wasn't the only one with a serious reaction.   "My other flight attendant next to me asked, 'Is that the smell that everyone's been talking about?' Everyone called it the 'dirty sock smell,'" the flight attendant said.According to industry insiders, the source of that foul stench comes from how airplanes are designed. Air in airplane cabins comes from "bleed air" — air that begins as fresh air outside that enters the jet engine. After entering the engine, some of that air "bleeds" off, mixed in with recycled cabin air and then is pumped back into the cabin.When a gasket leaks inside the jet engine, fumes from hydraulic fluids, oils or de-icing agents can enter the cabin.Julie Anderson, a representative from flight attendant union Association of Flight Attendants, says some of the oils that enter the cabin contain neurotoxic additives."Engine oil fumes contain a very complex mixture of chemicals that can include carbon monoxide," Anderson said. She added that the "dirty sock smell" can lead to hypoxia, headache, dizziness, feeling faint, confusion and even incapacitation."That's obviously an issue for flight safety and security," she said.When Andrew's plane landed and the flight attendants' symptoms persisted, they were sent to the emergency room."They said I had a high level of carbon monoxide detected in my blood," he said. Anderson says the industry has known about the problem since the 1950's and she says the solution is elementary. "My 11-year-old can recognize that it doesn't make sense to compress air in an engine that can leak oil, and feed that air to people in an enclosed space, without putting a filter on board," she said. As simple as that sounds, the stink about dirty sock smell is wafting into the courtroom. In an ongoing lawsuit, a group of flight attendants is suing Boeing, claiming their health suffered from a fume event on an Alaska Airlines flight. Boeing declined a request for an interview but issued a statement, saying that "Boeing has not changed its position that cabin air is safe to breathe." But that's the only plane in the sky using that system. Flight attendant Andrew is now plagued by a nagging cough and has to use an inhaler, causing him to worry more about travelers.   "I was concerned that if someone got sick, they wouldn't know why they got sick," he said. WICHITA FALLS, Texas — A man who was in jail awaiting trial for charges of sexually assaulting a child was released after his parents won the lottery and he posted a 0,000 bond.Jason Carlile is the 47-year-old suspect's name, and he is out from behind bars with an ankle bracelet for monitoring by authorities as well as a curfew. Carlile is the same man who was convicted in 2007 of buying a 15-year-old girl from the girl's mother. He served a three-year sentence.The girl's mother was also given a prison sentence in the incident, KFDX reports.Carlile's mother and stepdad won million in the Oct. 31 Lotto Texas drawing. It was purchased at a Fill and Chill store.The Times Record News reports Carlile has a history of sex crimes involving children.In 1994, there was an arrest warrant for him for exposing the genitals of another adult to a child and recording it.  914

With concerts, sporting events, and large gatherings on hold this summer, people are looking to the great outdoors for fun. Right now, national parks and other public lands are in the federal spotlight for another reason.“It's going to be a huge difference maker,” said Will Shafroth, CEO and President of the National Park Foundation. Shafroth is talking about the Great American Outdoors Act, a bill the Senate recently approved in a bipartisan 73-25 vote.“This is historic. I’ve been working on these issues since 1981, and I can tell you that in terms of the amount of money dedicated to any particular conservation purpose, this is the most significant bill to ever pass Congress,” Shafroth said.“At a time where there’s a lot of division about a lot of different things, this is something that Democrats and Republicans agree on,” he said.The bill would provide funding to maintenance backlogs across various federal lands. The National Park Service alone has almost billion in deferred repairs.“The wear and tear on these places is dramatic,” he said.“Seasonal housing really ranges from exceptional, to trailers that are falling apart in the middle of nowhere,” Shannon Dennison said. Dennison has worked at a number of national parks in the past.“The last time that the park service had a major infusion of funding into the agency and into the facilities was 1956,” she said.Also known as Mission 66, the decade long program was intended to expand visitor services. Dennison said that was the last major investment.“I think it's been a challenge to go 54 years without putting major investment into our facilities while we're seeing rising visitation,” she said.Visitation at parks has gone up over the years. In 2019, national parks saw nearly 328 million visits, up 9 million from 2018 and the third highest year on record.Even though these spaces were closed for a short time this year due to COVID-19, people are opting to turn to the outdoors since large gatherings are discouraged.“Being outdoors is one of the safest places to be, and it's also helping to contribute to people's mental health so the parks are seeing even more of an impact during the pandemic,” said Bonnie Clark, an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Denver.The legislation would provide billions of dollars to help with renovations and repairs, coming from energy production.“Essentially what happens is that when these oils and gas leases are done on federal land, they are paying money to be able to access and use these resources because they belong to everybody,” Clark said.This was one of the key debates.Dennison hopes the act paves an easier path for these projects.“Sometimes it can be difficult to get an entire pot of money for one entire project,” she said. “My hope is there will be a little more flexibility in how those funds can be applied based on the park level.”The legislation will now go on to the House of Representatives for a vote. 2974
