SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Gubernatorial candidates were in San Diego Sunday morning to debate numerous issues. More than 1,000 were expected to attend the forum that was held at the Town and Country Resort and Conference Center.Republican Travis Allen, a member of the California State Assembly, Democrat Antonio Villaraigosa, the former Mayor of Los Angeles, Democrat Delaine Eastin, the former State Superintendent of Public Instruction and Republican John Cox, a business executive, all attended the forum.All four candidates made their positions clear on a number of issues facing California, from homelessness and housing to that state of education. Watch the full debate in the player below:  725

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For breast cancer survivor Cindy Swan, group therapy sessions have been an integral part of her fight."At first, I thought I don't need that. That's not for me. I'm a 27-year veteran Navy wife. I can handle anything," she says."But people (in the group) really know what you're going through. They understand it. And seeking help does not make you weak."Cindy has been a regular at Sharp Grossmont group sessions since 2018.But the coronavirus pandemic forced the hospital to cancel all in-person sessions this past March."It was a little bit scary," Swan says. "Because now you have no lifeline that you have been holding on to, to learn your way."Social workers at Sharp scrambled during the first few weeks, trying to find a way to make sure cancer survivors, who are a high-risk group for COVID-19, could still meet and get the emotional support they need.They started to hold virtual group meetings, working through the kinks and quirks of sessions online."Coming to the group was important; maintaining those connections was important; normalizing what was going on for everybody was really, really important," says Sharp Grossmont Oncology Social Worker Linda Hutkin-Slade."But it feels different," she says. "You can't read the room like you do when you're in person. And you don't get the same (non-verbal) cues that you're getting when you're only seeing somebody from the shoulders up."The online sessions were a near-instant success. Within a few weeks, the groups, which are open to anyone, had grown. Cancer patients from all over the world started to join. And people who used to miss meetings because they were feeling ill or couldn't make the drive became more regular participants."It's never going to be the same as the in-person," says Hutkin-Slade. "But it is at least something. And it's a connection. And it helps normalize what people are going through."For Swan, it's been just as helpful as the in-person sessions."We still get to talk to each other," she says. "We get to have the guidance of our social workers, and all of that still helps you feel connected, even when you're not physically connected to other people."When the pandemic ends, Sharp says they'll make group therapy a hybrid of in-person and online, to let people access therapy in whatever way is most comfortable for them.That way, whether it's virtual or face to face, cancer survivors know they're not alone.For more information about Sharp Grossmont's online group therapy, click here. 2510

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of people packed the stands at the Coronado High School football field Friday, for a celebration of life in honor of Justin Meek.The Coronado High School graduate was one of the 12 people killed at the Thousand Oaks shooting on Nov. 7.The 23-year-old is remembered as a hometown hero, as he died helping protect others from the gunman’s bullets.RELATED: Coronado native among victims of the Thousand Oaks bar shootingMeek moved to Thousand Oaks to attend California Lutheran University. He worked at the Borderline Bar and Grill. Though he often worked as a security guard, the night of the shooting, he and his sister were working as promoters for ‘College Night’ events. When the gunshots started, Justin began helping people get out of harm's way. He was shielding them from gunfire when he was shot and killed. His sister made it out of the bar. The Meek family released a written statement that described Justin’s strong interest in the safety of others since Sept. 11. RELATED: High school students show thanks, one to his sister who survived the Borderline Bar Shooting“Justin wanted to part of the solution, to serve, to protect,” the statement reads.Meek was a criminal justice major with a minor in music. After college, Meek's family said he wanted to join the Coast Guard and then go on to become a U.S. Marshall. Meek’s mother served in the Air Force, his father served in the Navy, and he too felt a strong call to service.“Justin was a genuine, kind, loving, caring, compassionate, hardworking, talented man and a friend to everyone he met,” the statement reads. “He was a loving son, protective brother, and hero to all.”There is a paddle out for Meek on Saturday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Health officials issued two new public health orders Monday addressing cruise ships arriving in San Diego during the coronavirus pandemic.The orders are meant to give the county more legal framework in how the Port of San Diego interacts with ships and the cruise industry, Dr. Eric McDonald, the county's medical director of epidemiology, said.RELATED: San Diego gyms ordered to close in new coronavirus health orderThe new orders include:"No passenger or employee may disembark a cruise ship in San Diego harbor without the approval of the health officer or designee if any person on the cruise ship has tested positive for COVID-19. Any cruise ship that is permitted to dock in San Diego harbor shall notify the health officer or designee regarding any emergency medical treatment required for passenger/employee and follow all directives from the health officer or designee.No cruise ship in San Diego harbor may dock or disembark employees or passengers after March 31, 2020. However, upon approval of the health officer, a cruise ship may dock solely for the purposes of receiving fuel and provisions, so long as no employee or passenger disembarks. Cruise ships docked in San Diego harbor shall notify the health officer or designee regarding any emergency medical treatment for a passenger/employee and shall follow all directives of the health officer or designee.""I know there have been questions about ships that have come before and I can say that the individuals who have all departed these ships in the past to-date and tomorrow all have been screened, have no symptoms, and have no fever, and are leaving to go to their homes of record to complete 14-days of CDC recommended quarantine," McDonald said. One passenger and one crew member who each tested positive are currently hospitalized, McDonald said. There are also two pending cases related to the ship and was one emergency evacuation from the ship.As of Sunday, San Diego County had reported 519 coronavirus cases and seven deaths due to the virus. 2518
