A national organization is announcing a million campaign to turn out Hispanic voters in several of this year’s battleground states.Mi Familia Vota, based in Phoenix, said it will spend million on get-out-the-vote measures and an additional million on digital and television ads, starting in Arizona and Florida.Arizona in particular is seen as a battleground because of shifting demographics in the traditionally Republican state. Hispanics are a growing proportion of the electorate.The campaign comes amid rising concerns about Latino turnout in a year when that community has been hit particularly hard by the coronavirus. Latinos account for higher rates of infection from COVID-19 when compared to their share of the population in a number of states, and many are struggling financially from lost jobs and lower wages.“Basically what we’re saying is we’re not going to wait for political parties to do it themselves. Pew projects that in Arizona, 24% of eligible voters this year are Latino, up 2 percentage points from 2016. U.S. Census data shows that 47% of eligible Hispanic voters in Arizona cast a ballot in 2016, compared to nearly 63% of eligible white voters.Mi Familia Vota aims to get 3.3 million more Latinos in its targeted states to vote.Latino turnout in states such as Arizona could help decide the presidential election, said Matt A. Barreto, co-founder and managing partner of Latino Decisions, a polling and research firm based in Los Angeles.“We already saw this in 2018, where record Latino vote in a midterm provided the margin of victory for (Democratic U.S. Sen. A massive scam related to COVID-19 that targeted millions of Office 365 users in 62 countries was stopped by Microsoft's digital crimes unit.The department is almost like a police department. There's even an evidence room. It's an office that is only known to the people whose job it is to investigate attacks on Microsoft customers. They're a small group, but they're mighty.Tom Burt, the Corporate Vice President for Customer Security and Trust, said the team is comprised of "lawyers, forensic investigators data analysts, business people."Burt is in charge of the cybersecurity team that goes after cybercriminals. Their job is to find, intercept and then help law enforcement stop the scam artists in their tracks."(We're) looking for things that we shouldn't be seeing in the data relevant to how Office 365 was being used by our costumers," Burt said. "When we see that we can dive deeper, look at the metadata and look at the information that's streaming through our Office 365 global network — to try to find indicators of people doing bad things."The team often uses social media to alert people to the hacks they're seeing.Cybercriminals often target people's fears and anxiety. So, these days, the coronavirus pandemic is a good hook.One of the recent lures was a "cure for coronavirus" or "COVID-19 safety tips" from the Red Cross. The hackers were hoping Officer 365 users would take the bait and click."They're able to get control of users' Office 365 accounts," Burt said. "They can then see what's going on in that account. They can act as if they're you — they can send email in your name and look to find things in your email account like passwords and other information."Burt says the hackers are good. They do research and figure out how companies are structured and who does what. They'll look at social sites and figure out exactly who to target.Some of the scams people were getting involved co-workers asking others to transfer money to an account."They're sophisticated criminals," Burt said. 'They do this work to make sure the requests look legitimate so they can be successful in stealing money."Burt says there's an easy way to prevent phishing attacks."The number one thing by far is to utilize two factor authentication on all of your accounts," he said. "If you're a business,s make sure you're doing that for your business email if you're an individual, make sure you're doing it for your individual email and financial accounts."Burt is referencing the separate codes a user gets when logging on to a website. The site will give a prompt so they can prove that they are.The cybersecurity team says two-fact authentication will eliminate 98-99 percent of attacks.The challenge has always been to find the cybercriminals. So, this time around, the digital unit went around them."We're saying, let's stop them in a different way," Burt said. "Let's take the internet tools that they're using to conduct their crime, and let's go legally take those tools away from them."Court documents from the civil case filed in Federal Court say that Microsoft has the authority to take away the tools the hackers need to conduct their scams."Basically, websites, locations on the internet from which they can conduct their fraudulent activities — whether it's launching their efforts or the place where they want you to ultimately go — we go with the court order to those registrars and transfer those domains to Microsoft control," Burt said.Doing that strips hackers' access and gives Microsoft the ability to block them."We took down the criminal infrastructure that was being used to defraud people in 62 countries," Burt said. A sergeant involved in the search for a missing hiker in Zion National Park says there are several discrepancies he sees in the case of her 12-day survival in the park.Holly Courtier went missing while hiking in the park on October 6. A rescue effort involving the national park’s team and others, including K-9 teams and trained investigators, found Courtier on October 18 after a credible tip of a possible sighting.Her family said Courtier hit her head, became disoriented, and was able to stay near a “water source” in the park.In an interview with ABC4 in Salt Lake City, Sgt. Darrell Cashin says he finds some “discrepancies and questions that do not add up.”Cashin is a liaison with Washington County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, a job he’s had for about nine years, in addition he says he has 25 years experience on search and rescue teams.One thing he says didn’t add up was the water source. Park officials say Courtier was found along the Virgin River, but Cashin says that river was likely not drinkable or at least would have caused her to get sick.In August, Zion National Park officials sent out a warning to all visitors to avoid contact with the Virgin River “until further notice” because of levels of cyanobacteria from a toxic algal bloom.“If she had been drinking that water, unless she had some really high immune system, she would’ve been very, very ill and probably unable to come out on her own,” Cashin told ABC4. “She either took a lot of water with her or had another clean water source that was near here, but the Virgin River is not that source.”CNN reports the family told them Courtier was only able to take a few steps before collapsing. However, Zion National Park officials report she was able to walk out of the park on her own with minimal assistance. She was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out and stayed the night.In the interview with CNN, Courtier’s family does not clarify if the water source was potable, but they did say Courtier was without food while she was lost in the park.Cashin alleges there are also questions about her decision to go on the hike. A man was accidentally killed by a chainsaw Monday while helping a neighbor cut tree branches during Hurricane Irma cleanup.Authorities say a branch became entangled with the chainsaw. It kicked up and cut Wilfredo Hernandez's throat.Hillsborough County Fire Rescue responded and used a harness to lower him from the tree, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.The map below shows where the incident happened. 419
