BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- China's political advisors were urged to brainstorm on economic development and offer suggestions as the nation copes with the impact of the global downturn.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), a political advisory body, made the call as the standing committee of the 11thCPPCC National Committee kicked off its sixth meeting Tuesday.     Jia said maintaining steady, relatively fast economic development and safeguarding social stability and harmony were the foremost tasks facing the government. He called on the participants to focus their four-day discussions on these themes and make valuable suggestions. BEIJING, April 21 (Xinhua) -- China and Albania issued a joint statement here Tuesday in which they said they would boost their traditional friendship and bilateral cooperation in all fields.     The statement was issued after official talks between Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Albanian counterpart Sali Berisha in the Great Hall of the People during the afternoon.     The two countries vowed to increase mutual investment, encourage more business contacts and promote a balanced development of trade ties, the statement said.     China would support its competitive companies to invest in Albania and participate in the country's infrastructure construction, energy and mine exploitation, it said. Albania said it appreciated China's aid for its economic development. URUMQI, July 8 (Xinhua) -- More than 100 overseas media organizations came to Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, to report Sunday's riot, a press official said Wednesday.     "All media organizations are welcome to report the riot," said Hou Hanmin, spokeswoman for the Xinjiang regional government and in charge of the press center in Haide Hotel in downtown Urumqi.     "We will do our best to provide convenience for reporters while ensuring their safety," said Hou.     "We hope every media reports the incident objectively through close observation of the truth," she said.     The riot, which occurred Sunday evening in Urumqi, has left 156dead and more than 1,000 others injured.     Wu Nong, a press center worker, said the center had technicians to deal with communication problems for journalists. It has interpreters of English and Uygur languages.

BEIJING, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese banks have been active in transacting yuan cross-border settlement after the first deal was made Monday.     The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) said Tuesday it had dealt with yuan cross-border settlement totaling 17 million yuan (2.49 million U.S. dollars) in two days.     Many banks in Guangdong Province were active in dealing with yuan cross-border settlement. The Bank of China Guangdong branch transacted yuan cross-border settlement totaling 7.96 million yuan (1.17 million U.S. dollars) Tuesday.     "Guangdong Province has a large economic scale and is highly dependent on foreign trade. Yuan cross-border settlement could help enterprises avert exchange rate risks and reduce costs," said Cao Licong, deputy governor of the BOC Guangdong branch.     "The service is favored by enterprises and will be promising in the future," said Hu Ye, deputy governor of the ICBC Guangdong branch.     China launched its first yuan cross-border settlement Monday.     China's State Council, or Cabinet, announced in April a pilot program to allow exporters and importers in Shanghai, and southern Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Dongguan cities to settle cross-border trade deals in Renminbi (RMB), or yuan.     China last week issued detailed regulations for the pilot program for cross-border trade settled in yuan. The rules specified how to make transactions using yuan to settle trade with Hong Kong and Macao and regional trade partners.
