SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Legendary San Diego anchorman Jack White has passed away. White spent more than 30 years in America’s Finest City as a reporter and anchor at KGTV 10News.White grew up in Oceanside and graduated from Oceanside High School in 1957. He was even inducted into the school’s hall of fame for his contribution to the arts.White began his broadcasting career on the radio in the early 1960s before moving to TV where he spent 34 years at KGTV.On November 14, 2010, the City of San Diego declared Jack White Day. The county made a similar declaration. Many who worked with him called him a gentleman and a great coworker. After leaving 10News, White worked as a technical advisor on the movie “Anchorman.”White covered every story there was to be covered in San Diego. His Restaurant Row coverage was known as a 10News staple. His iconic line in this popular segment was "The meal was served piping hot, just the way I like it."White will be missed by many, both in the community and at 10News. 1014

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It looks like just another small apartment. Living room. Bedroom. Kitchen.But the apartment complex 10News toured is unlike any other. It's a solution for homelessness."People go into treatment, they get out, they relapse and the go back in and they get stuck in this thing we call the churn of in and out, and in and out of services."So Chris and Tammy Megison came up with a solution: Solutions for Change. The idea is to get families with children off the streets and into a program that would change their lives forever."We get them jobs right away, put them to work so they can learn the soft skills of working," Chris Megison said. "They're up at 5:30. Kids are fed and off to school. And now they're going to classes, they're going to work."Solutions for change works because of its motto, driven by accountability. It's a 1000 day program. Every client must have a job, and most work in the solutions aguaponic farm. They grow their own organic food, and what they don't eat they sell, and the proceeds go back into the program. "They're not looking to be a band-aid fix, they're looking to be a 'hand up' organization. They're not lowering the bar for people who find themselves in a pretty dark tragic place, they're trying to raise the bar and set people up for future success," San Diego County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar said.And since 1999, Solutions for Change has helped 900 families escape homelessness. People like Melissa Martinez and her children who not long ago were separated without a place to call home."It's put us all back under one roof. It's actually be a lot easier than I could have ever imagined, getting everybody to and from school, to and from work, we're really united and working as a team. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's always a good time to check on supplies and make sure you and your family are prepared for an earthquake.The County of San Diego recommends seven simple steps for earthquake safety:Fix potential hazards, like areas of your home that could pose a danger during an earthquake;Create a disaster plan with your family. The county's tips on how to handle a disaster here;Create a disaster supplies kit. The county also has tips on what to pack here;Fix your building's potential weaknesses;During earthquakes and aftershocks: Drop, Cover, and Hold-On;After the earthquake, check for injuries and damage; andWhen safe, continue to follow your disaster planSan Diego County recommends packing enough water, food, and supplies to last each member of the family at least three days. They also recommend that families practice their disaster plan so they're ready when an emergency happens.When an earthquake does happen, families should drop, find cover under something sturdy, and hold on to that cover. If there isn't anything sturdy, find an interior wall that is not near any heavy furniture or glass, scoot down and cover your head.If outside, find an open area away from buildings, trees, or anything overhead such as utility wires, sit down, and cover your head.While San Diego County has sparse earthquake activity compared to the rest of the state, one big enough can send tremors into our region.Residents can also sing up for AlertSanDiego mobile alerts from the county. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s the largest loss of life in United States Navy history and you can read an award-winning account of it by two San Diego authors. ‘Indianapolis: The True Story of the Worst Sea Disaster in U.S. Naval History and the Fifty-Year Fight to Exonerate an Innocent Man’ is being released as a paperback after the hardcover became a New York Times bestseller. Sara Vladic and Lynn Vincent wrote the book together after researching it for more than 17 years. “It’s so much more than a sinking story and a shark story,” said author Lynn Vincent. Vladic spent nearly two decades interviewing survivors from the sinking USS Indianapolis. “Getting to know these men and their story and heroism and what it took to survive those days is incredible,” added Vladic, “it still teaches us lessons today of what the cost of freedom really is and what we should be remembering.” The book is cinematically written and presents multiple accounts from the men that had to fend off sharks and each other for several days at sea after the heavy cruiser was sank by the Japanese during WWII. The authors say they are in talks with several streaming services to make a miniseries based on the book. 1202

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hundreds showed up to walk in the annual Friendship Walk at Liberty Station on Sunday. This year, the walk was also in honor of Lori Kaye, the only fatal victim in the Poway Synagogue shooting in April. Friends say Kaye was a long-time supporter of the Friendship Circle, a non-profit that provides support and friendship to special needs individuals and their families. Last year, Kaye donated all of the shirts for everyone at the walk. This year, everyone wore shirts that said "Walk for Lori" The walk raised over ,000 for The Friendship Circle. 581
