Governor Greg Abbott issued an Executive Order on Thursday to ensure hospital bed availability for COVID-19 patients as Texas faces an increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations. The Governor’s order suspends elective surgeries at hospitals in Bexar, Dallas, Harris, and Travis counties.Under this order, the Governor directs all hospitals in these counties to postpone all surgeries and procedures that are not immediately, medically necessary to correct a serious medical condition or to preserve the life of a patient who without the immediate performance of the surgery or procedure would be at risk for serious adverse medical consequences or death, as determined by the patient’s physician.Through the proclamation, the Governor can add or subtract from the list of counties included in the Executive Order to address surges in hospitalizations that may arise in other parts of the state.“As Texas faces a rise in COVID-19 cases, we are focused on both slowing the spread of this virus and maintaining sufficient hospital capacity for COVID-19 patients,” said Governor Abbott. “These four counties have experienced significant increases in people being hospitalized due to COVID-19 and today’s action is a precautionary step to help ensure that the hospitals in these counties continue to have ample supply of available beds to treat COVID-19 patients. As we work to contain this virus, I urge all Texans to do their part to help contain the spread by washing their hands regularly, wearing a mask, and practicing social distancing.”KXXV was first to report this story. 1587

HENDERSON, Nev. – Thousands of supporters of President Donald Trump packed an indoor venue in Nevada on Sunday, with no apparent social distancing in place and very few people wore masks. The rally was met with criticism by many, because it was in open defiance of the state’s regulations and the Trump administration’s own coronavirus pandemic health guidelines. The state’s Democratic governor, Steve Sisolak, slammed Trump for his rally. In a statement, he said the president’s “reckless and selfish actions” put countless lives in danger.“The president appears to have forgotten that this country is still in the middle of a global pandemic,” said Sisolak. “Early on in this crisis, when it came time to exhibit real leadership and make difficult decisions to protect the American people, he failed to develop a unified national response strategy. To put it bluntly: he didn’t have the guts to make tough choices – he left that to governors and the states. Now he’s decided he doesn’t have to respect our state’s laws. As usual, he doesn’t believe the rules apply to him.”During his rally, the president encouraged people to vote and took a jab at the state's AB 4 law, which requires every registered voter in the state to receive a mail-in ballot while also requiring day-of polling locations to be open."You can send your ballot and then you have to check your ballots counted because they might not count your ballot in this state," said Trump. "They might not count your ballot."Both of Trump's voting-related claims are not substantiated. The president also touted the pre-pandemic economy and unemployment numbers."Before the virus, we quickly achieved the lowest unemployment rate in Nevada's history and we'll soon be there again," he said. While COVID-19 cases are on a downward trend in Nevada, the state's unemployment remains one of the highest in the country. Also Sunday night, Democratic nominee Joe Biden released a new ad alleging the president called fallen war veterans suckers and losers remark the president has repeatedly denied making.Joe Biden is taking a very different approach to the campaign than Trump, only recently beginning to make public appearances, wearing a mask and practicing social distancing. The Democratic nominee slammed the president saying, "Nevadans don't need more bluster from the president, and don't need his reckless rallies."This story was originally published by staff at KTNV. 2438

GENEVA —The coronavirus pandemic “continues to accelerate," with a doubling of cases over the last six weeks, the World Health Organization chief says.WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says nearly 16 million cases have now been reported to the U.N. health agency, with more than 640,000 deaths worldwide.Tedros will convene on Thursday WHO’s emergency committee, a procedural requirement six months after the agency’s declaration of a public health emergency of international concern, made on Jan. 30 for the coronavirus outbreak. The panel will advise him on the pandemic.“COVID-19 has changed our world,” he told reporters from WHO’s Geneva headquarters on Monday. “It has brought people, communities and nations together — and driven them apart.”He cited some factors that have proven effective in some countries, including political leadership, education, increased testing and hygiene and physical distancing measures. 945

Heads (and eyes) up, skywatchers! The annual Perseid meteor shower is underway and will hit its peak this weekend. The meteor shower, so named because the meteors appear to come from the constellation Perseus, lasts for several weeks – from July 17 to Aug. 24 – but peak meteor activity will take place between about 4 p.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 12 and 4 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, according to NASA.During the peak, one can expect to see as many as 60 or 70 meteors per hour.Night sky conditions should be great for meteor viewing: The peak coincides perfectly with the new moon, meaning the sky will be plenty dark and meteors will be easy to spot. Most meteor showers are best after midnight. 702

GERMANY — Bayer plans to slash thousands of jobs as part of a corporate overhaul following its acquisition of Monsanto. The chemicals and pharmaceuticals group said it would cut 12,000 jobs out of its global workforce of 118,000 by the end of 2021. A significant number of reductions will be made in its home market of Germany.More than 4,000 jobs will go at the company's crop sciences division, a consequence of Bayer's acquisition of US rival Monsanto earlier this year.Bayer (BAYRY) spent over billion buying Monsanto. To gain regulatory approval for the deal, Bayer agreed to sell assets including its seed business and some herbicide brands. The German company said in a statement on Thursday that it was considering whether to sell more assets, including the sunscreen business Coppertone and footwear brand Dr. Scholl's.It will get out of the business of animal health, and sell its 60% stake in Currenta, a company that provides services to chemical companies.Shares in Bayer have dropped by more than a third so far this year, in part because of concerns over the company's exposure to lawsuits involving Roundup, a weedkiller made by Monsanto. In August, San Francisco jurors awarded 9 million in damages to a former school groundskeeper who said his terminal cancer had been caused by the product. The damages were later reduced by a judge, but hundreds of other patients have made similar claims. Monsanto has said the product is safe when used as directed. 1481
