SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. – A babysitter in Georgia has been charged with the murder of a 2-year-old girl who was under her care. The Sandy Springs Police Department said in a statement Tuesday that it began investigating on Dec. 9, when it received a report of an unresponsive child inside an apartment.First responders rushed the girl to an Atlanta-area hospital, where police say she was pronounced dead by medical personnel.Detectives say the child had been in the care of her babysitter at the time, 29-year-old Kirstie Flood.Later, police say an autopsy performed on the child revealed she suffered severe injuries that resulted in her death while under the care of Flood.Flood has since been arrested and charged with two counts of felony murder, one count of malice murder, one count of aggravated battery, and one count of cruelty to children. The police department didn’t release the identity of the victim. However, loved ones have told news outlets in the Atlanta area that the girl’s name was Fallon Fridley.Fallon’s parents told WSB-TV that Flood had been their full-time babysitter since August and they never suspected she would be capable of something like this.According to a warrant obtained by WSB-TV, police allegedly discovered Flood had been searching things on her phone, like “what type of people enjoy abusing other people’s children” and “what does it mean to have a sudden urge to beat a child that’s not yours.”Authorities are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Delaney by email at WDelaney@SandySpringsGA.Gov or by calling 770-551-3313. 1631
SANTEE. Calif. (KGTV) - Two dogs have died after a fire broke out in an East County home. The fire broke out at a home on Big Rock Road and Rancho Fanita Drive just before 2 p.m. Wednesday. The fire started in the home's kitchen, according to Santee Fire Department crews.Neighbors said they first saw smoke and though the fire was in a large field behind the home, before realizing it was in a corner of the house. One neighbor reportedly ran over and called the home's owner, who was not home but told the neighbor her dogs were inside. The neighbor broke a window out and tried to get into the home to save the dogs but was pushed back because of the thick smoke.Santee Fire arrived and broke into the back of the home to put out the blaze. Crews found the dogs and performed CPR and gave them oxygen but they had already died.Crews said the neighbor was right not to enter the home if the smoke was as bad as described. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The owner of the home reportedly lives there with her daughter and son-in-law. 1073

Scientists knew 2020 was going to be an active tropical storm and hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean. We’re now running out of names on the official list, so what happens next? The Greek alphabet. In early August, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted 19-25 total named storms in the Atlantic this year, and 7 to 11 becoming hurricanes. Colorado State University’s Tropical Weather and Climate Research Center also predicted an above-average year, with about 24 named storms and 12 hurricanes. With so many storms were predicted, why wasn’t a longer list of names created? Since 1953, the National Hurricane Center, a group within NOAA, has released a list of 21 potential names in alphabetical order. “They are now maintained and updated through a strict procedure by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization,” according to NOAA.The lists are rotated every six years, meaning names from 2019 will be used again in 2025. Names are sometimes retired from the list when a named storm is so deadly or costly that reusing the name would be inappropriate for “reasons of sensitivity.”Yes, 21 names and not 26. Because of the lack of names for some letters, there are no storms using the letters “Q”, “U”, “X”, “Y”, or “Z.”As of this writing, the only remaining name on the list is Wilfred. The National Hurricane Center has determined that if there are more than 21 named storms in a season, the remaining storms will take names from the Greek alphabet. For those of us who need a refresher on those letters: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda, Mu, Nu, Xi, Omicron, Pi, Rho, Sigma, Tau, Upsilon, Phi, Chi, Psi and Omega. The first time the back-up naming system was used was in 2005. That year, six storms had to be named using the Greek alphabet for a total of 27 storms that season. 1876
