SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Crowds are already flocking to San Diego beaches for the Fourth of July weekend.On Friday, many people claimed their spots early at Mission Beach and Oceanside.While some were able to keep their distance from one another, many did not have on facial coverings when near other people.“The majority of them are not wearing masks, I would say at this point in time,” said Rich Stropky, Marine Safety Lieutenant for San Diego lifeguards.He said more people are expected to make their way to San Diego Saturday as other Southern California beaches will be closed.Law enforcement agencies across San Diego have said they will focus on education, rather than enforcement when someone violates the public health order.He said the parking lots at Mission Beach were full by noon Friday.“As far as the capacity for our beaches, what has limited capacity in the past is the ability to park,” he said. “How far are people willing to park and still walk to the beach? Are they going to Uber in? Are they going to do drop-offs?”Stropky urged beachgoers to talk to lifeguards if they have any questions and to follow the public health order and original beach rules.“We have our COVID safety guidelines, and we want everyone to adhere to that,” he said. “We have our beach regulations; there’s no glass, there’s no dogs between 9 and 6, there’s no camping.”There’s also a beach hazard statement in effect this weekend. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cal Fire is battling a brush fire near East San Diego County on the U.S.-Mexico border. The flames broke out after 11 a.m. near the Cottonwood Creek area off SR-94, not far from Barrett Junction. 100 acres burned in the U.S., with the fire spreading to 650 acres in total by 7:30 p.m. It is 10 percent contained.The fire has a moderate rate of spread and was burning light brush, Cal Fire confirmed to 10News. Although he could cast a ballot without issue here in California, African Americans in southern states faced plenty of challenges."There were so many Jim Crow laws to keep blacks from voting in the south, all the civil rights in the south were really diminished," said Johnson.He describes the years leading up to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which bans racial discrimination in voting, as a time filled with protest and frustration around the country."It was a chaotic time, it was a time of great distress," he said.For the longtime San Diego pastor, the right to vote isn't something he's ever taken for granted. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - At least six employees with the VA San Diego Healthcare System counseling center have tested positive for the coronavirus.On Thursday, 10News spoke with several people who work at the location. The employees we spoke with said when people started having symptoms, they asked to work from home but were told to keep showing up.Too afraid to use their names or participate in any type of recorded interview for fear of retaliation from officials at the VA, the employees detailed their concerns over the phone.
