SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Just in time for the San Diego Zoo's reopening this month, a recent animal addition will be making his debut.A 2-month-old male pygmy hippopotamus, named Akobi, and his mother, Mabel, have been moved from the park's maternity habitat to the main pygmy hippo habitat in the Lost Forest area of the zoo.Akobi, born on April 9 and the first success pygmy hippo birth at the zoo in more than 30 years, stayed close to his mom once introduced to the habitat. But the zoo says he's already exploring the large pool, new terrain, and other animals in the shared habitat.RELATED: San Diego Zoo, Safari Park to reopen June 20"We’re excited to welcome guests back to the San Diego Zoo, so they can see this adorable calf who has brought his wildlife care team so much joy," said Leanne Klinski, wildlife care specialist for primates. "Akobi is doing great at navigating the pygmy hippo habitat, and I look forward to seeing the interactions between him and the primates who live in this habitat, too."Akobi can be seen from the morning until early afternoon in the Lost Forest habitat.Pygmy hippos are listed as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. The animals live in rivers and streams in the forests of West Africa. Less than 2,500 pygmy hippos now remain in Africa. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Local officials say a record number of San Diegans died of meth last year.According to the county's 2020 Meth Report Card, 546 San Diegans died from meth in 2019, 63 more than the previous record of 483 set in 2018.The County Medical Examiner's Office says people most impacted by meth are those 45 years of age or older, which represented 319 of the meth-related deaths. The ME says people in this age range tend to have chronic cardiovascular disease, which may have been from long-term meth use."There’s no sugarcoating it: Meth is destroying lives and families at a record pace here in San Diego County," said County Supervisor Dianne Jacob. "Local law enforcement and treatment services are on the front lines battling this scourge, but clearly we need to do even more as a region."While San Diego was once considered the "Meth Capital of the World," little is made locally today and most of it is being transported into the county from Mexico, according to the report. The DEA says that meth seizures at U.S.-Mexico ports of entry nearly doubled in 2019 compared to 2018.People who want to anonymously report meth or drug activity are asked to call the Meth Hotline at 877-NO-2-METH or visit www.no2meth.org. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Images of burning homes, helicopters and flames are now a regular occurrence in California.This summer, that wildfire threat became real for the Del Cerro community.“We could hear the exploding palm trees, we could smell the toxic, frightening smoke," remembers Glenn Thomas, Vice Chair of Friends of Del Cerro.The group wanted to do something to pay back firefighters for all they do for the community. They wanted to know what the department needs to help firefighters do their job better. “We believe you find out what people want and you give it to them!” said Thomas.Friends of Del Cerro teamed up with the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation to make something happen.What the department needs, Thomas learned, is more wildland firefighting hand tools. While these tools are currently on brush trucks, the department wants them on every engine.“There are so many more vegetation fires, and they grow so much bigger now," said Deputy Chief Steve Wright. “Something we needed that’s going to be a force-multiplier on vegetation fires that we didn’t have the immediate budget for."The group plans to raise ,000 for the tools and is halfway there thanks to a generous donation from the Padres.If you'd like to help, donate here. 1261
