ATLANTA, Ga. – U.S. Rep. John Lewis has died at the age of 80.The congressman and civil rights icon had been undergoing treatment in his battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.Lewis, a Democrat, served 17 terms in the House of Representatives, representing Georgia’s 5th congressional district since 1987.House Speaker Nancy Pelosi confirmed Lewis’ death after several reports Friday night, saying “Today, America mourns the loss of one of the greatest heroes of American history: Congressman John Lewis, the Conscience of the Congress.”Along with Martin Luther King Jr., Lewis was one of the “Big Six” civil rights activists who organized the March on Washington in 1963. ATLANTA (AP) — The former Atlanta police officer who fatally shot Rayshard Brooks is set to appear in court Tuesday to ask a judge to release him from jail while his case is pending. Garrett Rolfe faces charges including felony murder in the killing. Rolfe fatally shot Brooks in the back when Brooks fired a Taser in his direction while running away after a struggle on June 12. Rolfe is white. Brooks was Black. Rolfe's bond hearing is set for Tuesday afternoon. Felony murder convictions are punishable by a minimum sentence of life in prison. 554

ASPEN, Colo. — Rachel Zoe says her 9-year-old son, Sky, survived a 40-foot drop from a ski lift in Colorado on Sunday.The fashion designer and former reality TV star opened up about the scary incident on her Instagram story on Monday.Zoe said “ski patrol heroes” saved her son by quickly putting a mat under where they thought the boy would fall. She explained that she thinks the incident could have "easily" been prevented if a ski operator had stopped the lift when they saw Sky wasn’t on from the beginning.A representative for the Aspen Skiing Company said in a statement that it received a report of the child hanging from the lift at its Buttermilk ski area at about 2:48 p.m. When crews responded to lift, the representative says the boy was being held by an instructor and his father, who were on the chair with the child.“The boy was released and dropped to the pads below, where ski patrol was on scene,” said Jeff Hanle, VP of Communications at Aspen Skiing Company. “He was treated by patrol, brought to the base area and transported to the hospital by ambulance for examination.”Although the boy is “sore and banged up a bit,” Zoe says her son is in “great spirits” and is a “brave champion.”Zoe also posted a video of Sky explaining how he’s feeling and walking around for the camera.“Hi everyone. AURORA, Colo. – Hundreds of people are expected to gather Friday evening to demand that three officers involved in the in-custody death of Elijah McClain be fired by the Aurora Police Department.“For ten months Aurora Police Department has shielded Elijah McClain's murderers on their force from facing any form of justice. It was only last Friday, just ahead of a mass march for Elijah, that they pulled the three killers off the streets and put them on paid desk duty,” the Party for Socialism and Liberation – Denver (PSL) said in a statement about the event. “We need to make it clear that this is absolutely NOT enough.”Last Friday, APD announced officers Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt and Randy Roedema had been taken off street duty "because of threats and harassment," according to a police spokesperson.
