BRUSSELS, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) and China Monday signed an agreement aimed at enhancing cooperation in the field of disaster risk management between the two sides.European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva and visiting Chinese State Councilor Ma Kai witnessed the signing ceremony of the agreement for a joint project totaling 9 million euros (11.7 million U.S. dollars), among which 6 millions euros (7. 8 million U.S. dollars) will come from the EU.As the first bilateral project in disaster prevention, it is aimed at strengthening China's disaster management system with the support of the EU and its member states.EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva (R) shakes hands with visiting Chinese State Councilor Ma Kai in Brussels, capital of Belgium, on Nov. 29, 2010. BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday expressed the hope that the pricing difference on natural gas imported from Russia would be narrowed through joint efforts from both sides.Gu Jun, deputy director-general of the National Energy Administration's international department, made the remarks at a news briefing on Premier Wen Jiabao's upcoming visit to Russia and Tajikistan.Though companies from both sides had made many efforts in this regard, a certain difference still existed in the pricing of natural gas imported from Russia, Gu said, calling for additional sincerity to be demonstrated on the pricing talks by the two sides.Talks on this issue will be also a part of Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan's upcoming visit to Russia, she said.In 2009, Russia inked a framework agreement with China on annually supplying at most 70 billion cubic meters of natural gas to China, but they still did not reach an agreement on the supplying price.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will pay official visits to Russia and Tajikistan from Nov. 22 to 25 at the invitation of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Tajikistan Prime Minister Akil Akilov.During the visits, Premier Wen Jiabao will attend the 15th Chinese-Russian prime ministers meeting and the ninth prime ministers meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

NANJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- A court in east China's Jiangsu Province sentenced a man to death and another to life in prison Friday for illegally raising up to 4 billion yuan (606 million U.S. dollars) in a fraudulent investment scheme.Another 11 suspects were given jail terms ranging from two-and-a-half to 10 years for collusion in the fraud, which caused losses of 650 million yuan (98 million dollars) to 14,822 investors, the Intermediate People's Court in the provincial capital, Nanjing, said in a statement.According to the statement, Sun Haiyu and Hu Zhen jointly set up a company, Nanjing Runzai Biology Co., Ltd. in January 2004 and began soliciting investments from the public in the name of planting glossy ganoderma, or reishi mushrooms, which are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine.The judge said the company exaggerated its profits in planting glossy ganoderma and fraudulently claimed that the investment was risk free.The duo, together with 11 accomplices, raised more than 4 billion yuan from April 2004 to July 2008.Sun was sentenced to death for the crime of illegal fund-raising by fraudulent means, while Hu was sentenced to life imprisonment.

BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's industrial value-added output year-on-year growth quickened to 13.3 percent in November from 13.1 percent in October, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Saturday.The growth rate for the first 11 months was 15.8 percent year on year, down 0.3 percentage points from the January-to-October period, the NBS said.Industrial value-added output measures the final results of industrial production, which is the value of gross industrial output minus intermediate inputs such as raw materials and labor.
