BEIJING, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Monday encouraged children to be ambitious and pursue an all-round development while touring a museum in Beijing along with children from home and abroad ahead of the International Children's Day."You will be the driving force of the country's development in the future... You should be always ready to contribute your wisdom and strength to the building of a prosperous, democratic, civilized and harmonious modern socialist country," Hu told Young Pioneers who accompanied him at the China Science and Technology Museum. All the representatives of the sixth national congress of the Chinese Young Pioneers, the country's largest children's organization, took part in the tour with the President, as well as other children from home and abroad.Chinese President Hu Jintao joins the children and delegates to the 6th National Congress of Chinese Young Pioneers to visit China Science and Technology Museum in Beijing, May 31, 2010. Hu expressed holiday greetings to children of all ethnic groups and wished the once-every-five-year congress a complete success, which was scheduled to be held on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Young Pioneers, whose 130 million members are mainly primary and secondary school students aged between 7 to 14, constitute the majority of Chinese children."Children from home and abroad should strengthen exchanges, learn from each other and make progress together, so as to build the world in a better way in the future," Hu said.Wearing a red scarf presented by a Young Pioneer, Hu visited several exhibits about science and technology, during which he talked with children around him from time to time. The museum presented a special exhibition during the Children's Day, which falls on Tuesday, to educate children in science and amuse them with science-themed displays and interactive programs. While visiting the exhibit about safety education, Hu urged the whole society to pay high attention to children's safety and ensure children grow up in a safe environment.Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, Vice President Xi Jinping and Vice Premier Li Keqiang also visited the exhibition on Monday, among other senior leaders.
BEIJING, April 11 (Xinhua) -- China's banking regulator said on Sunday that banks should not extend loans to home buyers who intend to use the money for speculative purposes.Lenders should increase their awareness about financial risks and raise the down payment ratio "by a large margin", said the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) in a statement.Down payment ratio of a second or more houses should be no less than 40 percent and the interest rates should be strictly in line with risks, according to the statement. The action is the latest in a campaign by the central government to dampen China's overheated property market.
XIANGNING, Shanxi, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Almost 1,000 rescuers were racing the clock through the drizzle Monday to pump water and reach the 153 people trapped underground in a flooded coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province.Altogether 261 workers were in the pit of Wangjialing Coal Mine, which was under construction, when underground water gushed in at about 1:40 p.m. Sunday. Although 108 were lifted safely to the ground, 153 others were trapped in the shaft. Rescuers carry pipes at the site of a flooding accident of Wangjialing Coal Mine, sitting astride Xiangning County of Linfen City and Hejin City of Yuncheng City, in north China's Shanxi Province, on March 29, 2010."Currently, more than 970 people are participating in the rescue operation," said Liu Dezheng, a spokesman of the rescue headquarters and deputy director of the General Office with the Shanxi Provincial Work Safety Committee, at a news conference late Monday."If everything goes smoothly, with the installation of two more high-power pumps, it is expected that 650 cubic meters of water can be pumped out of the shaft per hour tonight, and 2,000 cubic meters per hour tomorrow," he said.Previously, six pumps had been used to pump up to 300 cubic meters of water per hour around the clock. But Liu also pointed out that complicated conditions underground could hamper the operation."The coal mine has a high concentration of gas. Rescuers have to face the danger of toxic gas, while fighting the water," he said. "We must guard against secondary disasters."Therefore, rescuers had started to drill a hole and open a drainage channel in the shaft to divert water from the flooded tunnel to another unaffected tunnel, he said."The channel, with a length of more than 100 meters, is expected to be completed by 6 p.m. Tuesday," he added.Local authorities have dispatched more than 40 medical workers and 20 ambulances to stand by at the shaft entrance.President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao have ordered local authorities to spare no effort in the rescue operation. Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang is at the site to oversee the operation. Most of those trapped were migrant workers from Shanxi, Hebei, Hunan and Guizhou provinces, rescuers said.Xu Shuwei was among the last group of workers to board a lift to escape the flood Sunday afternoon."Those trapped are my workmates, I just want to try my best to save them," said Xu, 40, who helped rescuers carry equipment throughout the night. The mine, which straddles Xiangning County, of Linfen City, and Hejin City, of Yuncheng City, covers about 180 square kilometers. The mining zone was estimated to have more than 2.3 billion tonnes of coal reserves, including 1.04 billion tonnes of proven reserves, according to the company's official website. The mine, affiliated with the state-owned Huajin Coking Coal Co. Ltd., is a major project approved by the provincial government. It is expected to produce 6 million tonnes of coal annually once in operation.Earlier this month, 32 workers were killed in a similar accident when underground water flooded a mine being built in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. One worker died after being lifted to the ground and 31 others were presumed dead two weeks after the accident happened on March 1.Rescue work, which took 14 days and involved 20,384 people, was halted on March 14 when those trapped were believed to have no chance of survival.
NAIROBI, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Somali pirates have hijacked a Taiwan fishing boat off the Horn of Africa nation coast with 26 crew members, a regional maritime official confirmed on Saturday.Andrew Mwangura, East Africa coordinator of Seafarers Assistance Program, said the ship's owner lost contact with the Tai Yuan 227 two days ago north of the Seychelles as it headed for the Maldives. "The fishing boat lost contacts two days ago and has 26 crew members from China, Kenya, Taiwanese and Mozambique. We received the reports on Friday and it seemed the hijack took place two or three days ago," Mwangura told Xinhua by telephone. The International Maritime Bureau has also confirmed the hijack.Pirate attacks off the Somali coast have continued despite the presence of several warships, deployed by navies of the NATO, the European Union, Russia, China, South Korea and India in the region to protect cargo and cruise ships against piracy.Kenya's proximity to Somalia prompted insurance companies to hike up their premiums for ships traveling to Kenyan ports to mitigate the increased insecurity. This led shipping companies to take the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope traveling to the Kenyan ports, with cost of doing business on the Kenyan coast going up by over 40 percent. To date more than 100 suspects have been transferred to Kenya by the Western warships patrolling the Indian Ocean to combat piracy. It is only Kenya and the Seychelles in the region that have agreed to take in suspects for prosecution, but both have recently complained about the burden of trying and jailing pirates in their countries.
BEIJING, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Overseas Chinese hailed the opening ceremony of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo Friday, saying it was a "perfect example of integration of Chinese characteristics and world diversity.""As an overseas Chinese, I feel so proud to see such a great event being hosted by China, and I feel the same excitement as was in Beijing Olympic games," said He Xiaohui, a Chinese community leader in Washington. She said the performance stage used blue as its main color, a color that represents peace and harmony, which echoes the theme of the expo."The Shanghai Expo could be a good opportunity. On the one hand, it will make the world better understand the world. Meanwhile, and more importantly, it will make the world better understand China."In Germany, Fu Chunping, chairman of the federation of Chinese associations, said he was deeply impressed by (Jean-Pierre Lafan, president of Internatinal Exposition Bureau)'s long sentences of Chinese in his address, which "showed the world's recognition of the Chinese culture."Fu said Chinese people in Germany were proud of the homeland and wished the Shanghai Expo a full success. In Italy, ethnic Chinese got together and watched the televised opening ceremony, describing it as a showcase of China's development.Though a work day, many local Chinese gathered in the Wenzhou Bar in downtown Rome to watch the live broadcast from China's CCTV channel 4.As an organizer of local Chinese, Xiaomin Chen told Xinhua that many Chinese came to the bar earlier for the celebation. They usually leave for Shanghai in August because many Italians will go abroad for vacation," he said.Zhengxi Chen, another organizer, told Xinhua the Shanghai Expo was an opportunity both for China and the world, especially at a time when the world was suffering from the impact of the financial crisis. For local Chinese in Italy, the World Expo in Shanghai was also a historical chance to learn new knowlege and creative ideas, he said.In South Korea, Chinese students there used their cellphones, MSN and emails to share the excitement of the opening ceremony.Zhang Leisheng, a student at Yonsei University, said he was very exicted after watching the gala live through the Internet with his Chinese compatriots."The spectacular ceremony made me feel very proud to be a Chinese," he said.Over 100 years ago, when China took part in London's World Expo, it was just playing a supporting role and now it had become a host of World Expo, said Pu Bo, a student at Sungkyunkwan University, adding that he was very pleased with a stronger China. The Shanghai World Expo opened Friday night with artistic performances, fireworks and high technologies that epitomized 159 years of Expo history.Thousands of people watched the gala live at the futuristic, UFO-shaped Shanghai Expo Cultural Center, a centerpiece facility at the Expo Park, while thousands more enjoyed fireworks, lights and fountains on the waterfront promenade, the Bund.It is the first time the 159-year-old World Expo has been held in a developing country.
