SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Active military members are saying thank you to those who have served by delivering food to veterans in honor of Veterans Day.The servicemen and women partnered with Meals on Wheels to deliver the food Monday.Meals on Wheels serves about 500 veterans a day. Many of them can't leave their homes. Local Navy members say they decided to help deliver the items to say thank you for their service. "It's everyone's responsibility to take care of the previous generations," says Petty Officer First Class Ryian Harris. He served in World War II and was then shipped to Korea. He says it's nice to have the active service members think of him this Veteran's Day. "It's special, very special," says Keller. Meals on Wheels serves about 1,400 seniors every day, with volunteers driving about 116 routes. Meals on Wheels says it has opened its program to disabled vets of all ages. 1051

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An 87-year-old man was beaten during a home invasion in Clairemont Wednesday afternoon. According to San Diego Police, the incident happened on the 4600 block of Firestone Street at 3:02 p.m. Police say three men forced their way into the 87-year-old man’s home before beating and robbing him. "All of a sudden three guys come plowing through my front door, said 'this is a robbery.' I said, 'Come on ... I got nothing here for you.' Which didn’t dissuade them," said Paul Schmidt. Schmidt told 10News he was working on a ceiling fan with the door open when the men broke in. “I had scissors laying there, he grabbed the scissors and he threatened me with it. He said, 'There’s three of us and one of you, and we’re robbing you.' And what could I do, maybe one or two guys I can handle, but three ..." Schmidt added. Schmidt says he fought back, grabbing one of the robber's beards before one of the men held scissors to his throat. "The guy with the beard, he was the meanest, he seemed to be the lead, but he was higher than a kite," Schmidt said. The robbers were able to get away with Schmidt's wallet as well as his red pickup truck and some smaller items. Police arrested two suspects in the attack on July 25. Both suspects have, as of Monday, been charged with robbery, elder abuse and auto theft.The suspects were identified as John Slobig, 59 and Terry Jones, 53. Police say a third suspect is still outstanding and the victim’s vehicle was returned. 1489

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A second Scripps Medical Response Team has deployed to Northern California, tasked with helping fire victims.The first team returned Friday after a nine-day mission.“Being there in these shelters with people that have lost totally everything, but they're thankful for their lives, it just sets a whole new meaning for us for Thanksgiving," said Steve Miller, a Registered Nurse and part of the response team.Miller says because fire victims were forced to evacuate so quickly many did not have their medications or ID's to pick up prescriptions. He says the smoke also made respiratory problems worse. The days are long for the medical team, 12 hours at the shelter providing medical care along with prep and a daily debrief. “You’re in austere conditions; you’re living in tents, it’s cold, it’s wet, you do not have electricity, so you have to be able to work in that environment. You don't have all the medical tools you have in the hospital.”The second four-person team will continue to help fire evacuees over the next week. 1056

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego State University study abroad student and a University of San Diego graduate student have both tested positive for the coronavirus, the universities announced Friday.The SDSU student was studying abroad in Italy and recently returned home to the United States. The student is self-isolating at his home outside of San Diego County, the university said in a release.They added that the student visited two off campus offices for a brief period of time, and did not attend any classes."Due to the student's limited contact with the campus, we consider that the risk to the greater SDSU campus community is low," said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer.A graduate student at the University of San Diego also tested positive for the virus, the university said Friday in a tweet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A young sea otter who was found stranded on a beach and deemed non-releasable has been given a new name. SeaWorld San Diego took in "Nova" the sea otter in March, where she has been thriving with other sea otters in the park's Otter Outlook habitat.Nova was found abandoned without a mother on a beach in Cambria, Calif., in March 2018. Monterey Bay Aquarium took her in and provided her care. There, she was also paired with an adult female otter to act as a surrogate mother.When the aquarium released her back into the wild about a year later, she was rescued once again and deemed non-releasable by the US Fish and Wildlife. Eventually, Nova was taken to SeaWorld, which is one of the few California facilities that rehabilitates and cares for southern otters. While the park is currently closed due to the coronavirus, SeaWorld says it intends to reopen on July 1 with new health guidance. 921
