A woman in Illinois who tried to spike a toddler's sippy cup of milk with nail polish remover has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.Andrea Vazquez-Hernandez, 37, of Carol Stream, Illinois was sentenced Friday after being found guilty of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm to a child under 13 earlier this year.In May 2016, Vazquez-Hernandez mixed "one inch" of nail polish remover with milk and gave it to her husband's daughter. The girl immediately spit out the milk when she tasted the nail polish remover and was taken to the hospital. She was later released, and tests later revealed that her milk had been spiked. The girl had been fathered by Vazquez-Hernandez's husband with another woman, and Vazquez-Hernandez reportedly tried to poison the girl in order to punish her father.During her sentencing, the Chicago Tribune reports that Vazquez-Hernandez told the judge that she thanked God that the child was OK, but the judge was reportedly concerned about Vazquez-Hernandez's "lack of remorse."Vazquez-Hernandez will be required to serve at least five years of her 10-year sentence before being released.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. Alberto was downgraded to a subtropical depression Monday night, after drenching the Southeast with rain and killing at least two people.Despite weakening to a depression, the threat from Alberto remained from possible flooding and heavy rains. Storm watches and warnings were discontinued for coastal regions, but those inland remained in effect. Alberto will continue its course north bringing heavy rain to Alabama through the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday. On Monday, two people -- a news anchor Mike McCormick and photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer, of Greenville, South Carolina-based CNN affiliate WYFF -- were killed in Polk County, North Carolina. A tree fell on their SUV as they covered the hazardous weather, the station said."Two journalists working to keep the public informed about this storm have tragically lost their lives, and we mourn with their families, friends and colleagues," North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said in a statement. "North Carolina needs to take Alberto seriously.""I urge everyone to keep a close eye on forecasts, warnings and road conditions, especially in western North Carolina where even heavier rain is predicted through tomorrow [Tuesday]."The storm is threatening the Southeast with heavy rain, as it moves north at 12 mph.Alberto made landfall as a subtropical storm in the Florida Panhandle on Monday afternoon, reaching maximum sustained winds of 45 mph as it arrived in Laguna Beach, Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center. It left 6,540 customers in Florida without power, according to the Florida Division of Emergency Management.Where Alberto is headedThe system is forecast to move across Alabama overnight and into the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday, then into the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region on Wednesday and Thursday, according to the National Hurricane Center.Three states likely to bear the brunt of the storm, Florida, Mississippi and Alabama had declared emergencies ahead of Alberto.Alberto could still bring isolated rain totals up to 12 inches in areas of the Florida Panhandle and Alabama, the NHC said. This could cause flooding and flash flooding, it stated.About 2 to 6 inches of rain are expected from Alabama to the western Great Lakes and from northern Florida to the mid Atlantic coast through Wednesday, it stated. The National Hurricane Center also said that swells, which could cause life-threatening surf and rip current condition, could affect the eastern and northern Gulf Coast through Tuesday.The-CNN-Wire 2501

After making a go at in-person classes, a jump in COVID-19 cases on campus has prompted the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill to shift to virtual only for all undergraduate courses, the university announced Monday.UNC will start distance learning on Wednesday. The university reported 129 confirmed COVID-19 cases last week, and a jump in its positivity rate from 2.8% to 13.6%. The university said it has tested 954 students with 177 in isolation and 349 in quarantine. The university said that most of the infected students have mild symptoms. The university said graduate, professional and health affairs schools will continue to be taught as they are, or as directed by the schools.UNC will allow students to cancel residence hall housing without penalty in an effort to depopulate the campus.“There are no easy answers as the nation navigates through the pandemic,” UNC President Peter Hans said. “At this point, we haven’t received any information that would lead to similar modifications at any of our other universities. Whether at Chapel Hill or another institution, students must continue to wear facial coverings and maintain social distancing, as their personal responsibility, particularly in off-campus settings, is critical to the success of this semester and to protect public health.”The university’s football team is still slated to play this fall, along with other members of the ACC. Two of the five “Power 5” conferences, the Pac-12 and Big 10, have opted to delay their seasons to the spring. The ACC, SEC and Big 12 are still slated to play this fall. The good news for the state of North Carolina is coronavirus cases are declining. According to New York Times data, the state was averaging 2,000 new cases per day, but that number has fallen to under 1,300. Deaths are still an issue in the Tar Heel state, with an average of 25 people dying per day from coronavirus-related illnesses. 1926

ALPINE, Calif (KGTV) - An East County woman is recounting the "breathless" moment after she looked in her truck engine and saw a very large rattlesnake. In the backyard of a home along Foss Road sits a 1978 Chevy half-ton truck, Jules Piatek's first-ever vehicle. "I love my truck. I tell my kids if I die, just bury me in my truck," said Piatek.RELATED: 6-foot-long rattlesnake found in Santee after nearly attacking dogShe's not alone when it comes to loving the truck.  Last week, just past 10 a.m., she stood in her yard and saw it."Glanced to my left and just caught a glimpse of the snake in my engine," said Piatek. When Piatek took a closer look, she saw it's head and then the rest of it, coiled up near the starter."Oh, hell no! I don't want that snake anywhere near me. He was way too big and way too fat," said Piatek.RELATED: What to do in the event of a rattlesnake bitePiatek backed away slowly."When you see it, you really start to panic. Holy crap, what is it going to do?" said Piatek. What Piatek did manage to do was take a few photos, before calling up professional snake wrangler Tom Minga. He arrived and used snake tongs to remove it from the engine."It was shady, just in there just hanging out," said Minga.Minga says it was a Southern Pacific, the most common local rattlesnake and about 4-feet long. It's hardly the first oversized rattler of the season. Minga just caught another one a few homes down.A few days ago, 10News reported on the discovery of a 6-foot-long Red Diamond rattler that surprised a woman and her little dog in a Santee backyard.Minga says the giant sizes mean despite the lack of rain this winter, food remains aplenty and the snakes should continue to be an active snake season. He added that he will relocate the rattlesnake somewhere in the backcountry. 1837

Actor Dwayne Johnson is among the investors who submitted a winning bid for the XFL — the professional football league which was in the midst of its first season when the COVID-19 pandemic cut it short.Johnson, Dany Garcia and RedBird Capital Partners combined to purchase the league for million, according to the press release. The sale is subject to bankruptcy court approval at a hearing on Friday.“The acquisition of the XFL ... is an investment for me that’s rooted deeply in two things - my passion for the game and my desire to always take care of the fans,” Johnson said in a statement. “With pride and gratitude for all that I’ve built with my own two hands, I plan to apply these callouses to the XFL, and look forward to creating something special for the players, fans, and everyone involved for the love of football.”Prior to joining WWE, Johnson played college football at the University of Miami, where he won a national championship in 1991. He later played professionally for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League for one season. The XFL kicked off its inaugural season earlier this year with the goal of serving as a springtime development league for NFL hopefuls. The league consisted of eight teams, mainly composed of former college and NFL players. Despite modest TV ratings and an early buzz, the league closed operations in April after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down sporting events. The league is the second iteration of the XFL. In 2001, McMahon launched a football league by the same name that relied heavily on wrestling-style antics as an enticement for viewers. The league folded after one season. 1655
