SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Steele Canyon High School is one of two evacuation sites run by the American Red Cross for people affected by the Valley Fire, but they're not housing people like they normally would. Instead, they're acting as a resource facility for families like the Roberts'."Mine was one of the only houses in the neighborhood that went up," Alana Roberts said. Her weekend was turned upside down when she got word of the Valley Fire, which went from 100 to more than 10,000 acres in less than 48 hours, claimed her home. "I was in Oceanside and we raced to get in and as soon as we were in our truck, cops said 'you need to go now'", Roberts recalled.She was able to gather just a few belongings. "It was me and my husband who went in and grabbed what we could and let animals free. I had chickens and I couldn’t get them all."And now, she's one of the dozens of people seeking relief and a place to sleep at one of American Red Cross' evacuation sites."Someone gave me dog food, food for the kids, and we have the restrooms so we can kind of wash up." These sites typically provide shelter for families seeking relief, this time around, they couldn't."Outdoor sheltering is basically what we’re doing, people are in the lots in their cars and are acquiring hotel vouchers to put people in lodging," said Earl Potts with the American Red Cross. So far, 60 people have received hotel vouchers but last night they ran out, forcing people like Roberts to hunker down in their cars, trailers, and RVs. "We figure the family will stay together, and hunker down together."The Red Cross said as the holiday weekend comes to an end, they're hoping to get at least 200 more rooms available. "We’re able to provide meals at certain times of day and a place to park and sleep which makes it less but more of a priority situation."Alana said she's just thankful her family is safe and is going to return to what's left of her home once they're given the go-ahead."I don’t know if its truly set in. This morning my husband made me coffee and I thought about my brand new coffee maker I got for Christmas. I get camping coffee to drink now, I don't think it's really set in." 2179

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Still many unanswered questions after alleged Poway synagogue shooter appeared at his readiness hearing in San Diego Superior Court.The Deputy District Attorney, David Grapilon, said he doesn't know if this will be a death penalty case and can't tell 10News how the 19-year-old legally obtained the gun used during the shooting.In the state case the shooter faces one count of murder, three counts of attempted murder and a count of arson against an Escondido mosque."We have still not received recordings of the witnesses, we expect that there's going to be firearms analysis which will be crucial for this case, we also expect that there's going to be computer evidence involving my client's computer which is going to be very relevant in this case," Public Defender John O'Connell said.The evidence is already extensive, more than 700 pages handed over from the Deputy District Attorney to the defense. More evidence includes surveillance video of the shooting from the time he entered to the time he left the synagogue."The Sheriff's Department did a pretty exhaustive investigation along with the FBI, and allied agencies and there's a lot of statements of witnesses that we're taking," Grapilon said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego State University resumed some in-person classes Monday, allowing several thousand students to come back to campus.Monday was the first time students were allowed at school since in-person classes were suspended in September due to the rising number of reported positive COVID-19 cases, both on and off campus.SDSU fine arts graduate student Naomi Chicoine has been taking classes almost entirely online this semester because of the outbreaks on and off campus.She said, "The hardest part is not knowing what's going to happen next. Are we going to be able to stay on campus or not?”The school has nearly 1,200 cases since school started in late August. At one point, the case numbers were high enough to put San Diego County at risk of being knocked out of the state of California’s red tier and into the stricter purple tier.Students are now being asked to do self-assessments and stay home if they're feeling sick.Before they go into a class, students get their temperature checked at one of two kiosks on campus. A device scans their temperature, then displays green or red, indicating if they are fever-free.Students get a wristband if they're cleared, which is date-stamped, and it allows them to go to class. The process takes less than a minute and saves professors from having to scan students themselves.Everyone coming onto campus for class -- students and staff -- is also required to get tested at least every 14 days.The school is also promising to strictly enforce mask and social distancing compliance. Classes are limited to mostly those required by students for graduation, around 3,000 students per week who will come to campus.The California State University system has also expanded SDSU's ability to enforce policies. They say they're issuing citations to students and staff who don't comply with the rules.Students could also face additional consequences, such as suspension or expulsion, according to a letter from the university president. 2000

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students at the University of California San Diego are still reeling from Wednesday's storm that flooded more than a dozen apartments.Students told 10News they were shocked when water poured in around 11 p.m. during the storm. One young man, who didn't want to be identified, said the water seeped in under the door and poured in through a floor-length window in their bedroom."So every angle yeah, it instantly started soaking everything under my bed," he said, adding the water was freezing cold.RELATED: Rain floods buildings on the campus of UC San DiegoHe took videos documenting the two inches of water that seeped in."If I wasn't here, then every bit of electronics we had out here would've been completely ruined, hundreds of dollars worth of stuff," the man told 10News.Another student shared her experience, saying she was walking back to her dorm after studying and found "about a 4-foot deep puddle leading up to my door." She said once she opened the door mud and water flowed in.She said the timing was terrible."I have a midterm Monday, I'm actually getting tutoring right after this, it's a bit crazy."Students scrambled, trying to get help from the university and relocate. One student told 10News she never got help from the university, despite calling multiple times Wednesday night and getting a case number.Thursday morning cleaning companies went to work, installing fans in the rooms and peeling off baseboards.Some students said the university is doing a great job."Is there something we can brainstorm to fix this so it doesn't happen in the future, because I can only imagine what's going to happen next week when it rains harder and I'd hate to come back from break and see, 'oh everything's damaged." a student said.The university said four students were relocated to temporary housing.
