SANTEE (CNS) - One person was found dead at the scene of an apparent single-vehicle crash this morning.A car was found off the roadway just before 8 a.m. near the 11400 block of Woodside Avenue, San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Dave Perkins said.Details were scant, but Perkins said deputies found a woman, later identified as 40-year-old Ashleigh Hanson, inside the car who appeared to have died of injuries sustained in a crash.It's unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash or if whether played a role. 537

(KGTV) - A group of families in San Marcos is creating some outdoor learning pods when schools open with distance learning this fall.Like for so many others, distance learning in the spring was an exercise in distraction for the Holman family: Lauren and her husband, both working from home, along with 5-year-old Isabella, and 7-year-old Bradley, who tried to focus during class."Any time the live meetings with his teachers would go more than 20 or 30 minutes, he would start to get distracted," said Lauren Holman.Meanwhile, Lauren was trying to juggle her kids' needs with her job as a full-time online teacher."It was overwhelming and hectic, definitely a lot of stress," said Holman.That stress was revisited when she heard about schools opening with only distance learning."Internally I freaked out a bit, saying this is impossible," said Holman.So, she looked into what was possible. She and eight other families are creating two different learning pods."We have a small group of trusted families," said Holman.In one pod were Isbaella and three other kindergartners. In another, Bradley and five other 2nd graders. All are classmates at Twin Oaks Elementary."The parents will act as facilitators. I equate them with a substitute teacher who helps execute the lesson plan," said Holman.Parents will take turns, each taking a day with one group of kids to make sure they stay on track, offering one-on-one help. The micro-schools will be held outside, in back yards and parks. Canopies owned by the families will help with the sun."Trying to keep it safe. Promote social distancing," said Holman.Each student will be given their own box of supplies. Handwashing and hand sanitizing will be emphasized. The outdoor setting will offer options for socializing. Holman hopes her pods will give her and the other parents a break while giving her kids a little normalcy."I hope they are able to get the same experience in the classroom, as far as their academics. (KGTV) — A man convicted of murder in Honduras was arrested after border agents say he was caught crossing the border with members of a migrant caravan in Tijuana.Miguel Angel Ramirez, 46, was arrested on Nov. 24 around 11 p.m. after he was caught entering the country illegally about a mile east of the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Two other men traveling with Ramirez were also arrested, one of who had previously been deported, according to CBP.Border agents say Ramirez admitted to being convicted of murder and was released a few months ago. The Honduran Consulate in Los Angeles confirmed he had served 10 years in a Honduras prison for homicide and another 3 years for robbery. He added that he had traveled to the U.S. among the migrant caravan from Honduras, border agents said.RELATED: Mexico's new president could change border policy“It was Border Patrol agents’ effort and valued partnership with the Honduran Consulate in Los Angeles that helped us identify a dangerous convicted felon moving amongst the migrant caravan," San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott said.Ramirez and the two other men, ages 22 and 38, are all Honduran nationals and being held in Department of Homeland Security custody pending deportation proceedings.The arrest was made a day after El Centro border officials say an admitted MS-13 gang member suspected of being in the U.S. illegally was arrested near the Calexico Port of Entry.Border officials said 29-year-old Jose Villalobos-Jobel, of Honduras, told agents he had traveled to the U.S. border within the migrant caravan group as well. SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) - An abandoned church in San Ysidro will become the site of 10 new affordable housing units, as well as a cultural center.The non-profit group Casa Familiar is spearheading the project, called "Living Rooms at the Border.""What we want to do is build a culture corridor from SY Blvd through the alley, all the way to the Beyer Trolley Station," says Community Development Director David Flores.The church was built in 1927 and is known in the neighborhood as "El Salon." Casa Familiar bought the property in 2000 and has worked to develop it since then.The proposed 14,000 square foot development will turn it into a cultural arts center. Around it, Casa Familiar will build 10 units of affordable housing, a community garden and patio, office space for support services and programs, and walkways connecting the alleys to main streets.Flores says it will connect the community to its past and future."There's history. There's richness. There are stories that families love sharing about San Ysidro and growing up here. It's going to be a space that will bring back a lot of those memories."As part of the plan, the exterior of the church will stay in place. So will much of the filaments inside."People would tell us stories about coming here for Sunday services, or doing their first communion, even weddings, people get married here," says Flores. "It's a really special, cool place, where we thought, why demolish everything. This is a really important community icon that we can restore."The project is the latest effort to revitalize the neighborhood. A new park and playground are just a half block away from the church, and plans are underway to build a new San Ysidro library two blocks away.The new homes will vary in size. There will be three one-bedroom units, three two-bedroom units and four three-bedroom units."This is not a lot of units, it's 10 units," says Flores. "But the whole idea behind this project is to build in the service, support programs that families need.""Living Rooms at the Border" will cost around 8.25 million dollars and includes improvements to the surrounding infrastructure.Casa Familiar says they got a 0,000 seed grant from Art Place America. They were able to pair that with a 2-for-1 matching grant from the PARC Foundation. That gave Casa Familiar more than a million dollars to begin the project. (KGTV) — Palomar Community College President Dr. Joi Lin Blake will resign this summer, after facing criticism over a recent budget report warning of the district's fiscal instability.This week the district's Governing Board approved the agreement for Blake to resign, which will take effect June 30. Blake was placed on leave following the Fiscal Crisis Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) report.Palomar Vice President Jack Kahn will serve at Acting Superintendent and President.
