Anthony Mele was dining at a steakhouse in Southern California with his daughter on his lap when a homeless man allegedly walked up to him Wednesday and stabbed him in the neck.Jamal Jackson, 49, was arrested shortly after the attack in Ventura and has been charged with premeditated first -degree murder, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office said.Mele died the next day, but his daughter was not injured. An investigation into what led up to an explosion that hurt officers and a hostage situation in North Haven continued on Thursday.State police said a man held his wife hostage inside of a home on Quinnipiac Avenue for several days.She escaped, but he barricaded himself inside a barn near a house on the property.That's when police said the explosion happened on Wednesday night.Eight officers were hurt and the suspect is not in custody. Police said they continue to search for him.The area surrounding the property has been blocked off by rows of cruisers. Quinnipiac Avenue is closed between McArthur Road and Pent Way.North Haven police said they first responded around 2 p.m. on Wednesday.A woman went to the North Haven Police Department with a complaint about an incident at the Quinnipiac Avenue home.Police said the woman had managed to escape after she was held hostage for three days by her husband.Troopers told Channel 3 that they determined a tactical response was necessary.A SWAT team was called in to help.While police and the SWAT team were negotiating with the man, state police said there was an explosion at a barn near the home.Flames were captured in video that was recorded at the scene.The last time the man was seen was when he was barricaded inside of the barn."The suspect is not in custody at this time," said trooper Kelly Grant, Connecticut State Police. "They are still attempting to locate that suspect. They have asked the residents right in this general vicinity to shelter in place while they conducted this investigation."The eight tactical officers who were hurt in the explosion were taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital.None of their injuries were life-threatening.State police have taken over the investigation.  1762

An Akron, Ohio man will spend at least the next 20 years in prison for selling fentanyl to a woman who overdosed on the drug and died nearly three years ago.Jurmaine A. Jeffries, 29, was convicted of distribution of fentanyl and possession with intent to distribute the drug.A jury found that the fentanyl Jeffries sold the woman resulted in her death.On Sept. 16, 2015, the day of her death, the woman texted and called Jeffries to ask about buying heroin. He responded to her messages and told her "B right there."Cell phone records placed Jeffries in the area near the woman's house on the day she died, authorities said.According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, after the woman died, police used her phone to text Jeffries about buying more drugs. Police arrested him when he showed up at the woman's house with fentanyl on his person.Sentencing will take place at a later date, but Jeffries is facing a mandatory minimum of two decades in prison for his charges.“We will prosecute those who sell fentanyl and other drugs that kill our friends and neighbors,” U.S. Attorney Justin E. Herdman said. “This defendant drove around Akron delivering poison for profit. An Arizona man is facing a second-degree murder charge after shooting his girlfriend in the face at his Mesa apartment on Sunday morning.According to police, around 8:30 a.m. officers responded to a report of an accidental shooting near Country Club Drive and Broadway Road.Responding officers found the woman with a gunshot wound to the eye. She was transported to the hospital and was pronounced dead, police said. During interviews with police, 22-year-old Martin Larney confirmed that his girlfriend had spent the previous night at the apartment, which he shares with his brother.Larney told police that as the victim was sitting on the floor changing her clothes, he tossed his handgun onto a couch in the room, causing it to go off and strike her.Police said Larney changed his story twice, initially reporting that he was trying to clear a round when the gun discharged, then finally admitting he was waving the gun at the victim because he "was upset at what she was wearing."According to police documents, Larney also admitted that he thought about shooting the victim as the gun went off, and had "thought about shooting the victim in the past."Larney has been booked on one count of second-degree murder.   1260

(AP) — A 3-year-old gelding was fatally injured in the fifth race at Santa Anita on Saturday, becoming the 34th horse to die at the track since December.According to a statement from track owner The Stronach Group, jockey Ruben Fuentes pulled up Satchel Paige at the three-eighths pole of the 6 1/2-furlong sprint. Track veterinarian Dr. Dana Stead saw that the gelding had sustained an open fracture of his left front ankle and decided to euthanize him.Fuentes wasn't injured in the ,000 race featuring horses that had yet to win.Dr. Dionne Benson, chief vet for The Stronach Group, said the gelding will undergo a required necropsy at UC Davis. She said the accident and necropsy report will be reviewed "to learn what, if anything, could have been to prevent the accident."Benson said Santa Anita will work with the California Horse Racing Board to investigate the accident.Trained by Phil D'Amato, Satchel Paige was winless in six career starts, with one second and one third-place finish.
