New plans for student loan debt forgiveness are being proposed as President-elect Joe Biden prepares to take office in just a few weeks. Many of those with student loans, as well as many economists, are hopeful some form of student loan debt forgiveness will pass.“I think it is one of the most accessible ways President-elect Joe Biden has to stimulate the economy,” said Suzanne Kahn, director of education, jobs, and worker power at the Roosevelt Institute in New York.In an interview covering the possible benefits of student loan debt forgiveness, Kahn explained the two ways in which the Biden can get the debt forgiven. One, he can push for Congress to include this debt relief in the next stimulus package, or two, he can take executive action. Either option could eliminate student loan debt for roughly 15 million borrowers and reduce the debt of another 30 million Americans.The president-elect is currently focused on pushing for ,000 to be forgiven in the next stimulus bill and has not said if he would actually consider executive action. However, he has also not refuted that option either.The latter option is certainly the more controversial way to get this debt forgiven, although many Democrats argue it is still legal and fully within a president’s power to do so. Many high-ranking Democrats in Congress explain Biden would have the authority to do this through the Higher Education Act.Experts like Kahn believe it is more likely that Congress will not agree on any amount of student loan debt forgiveness and Biden will take executive action.“I think that it is through executive action, or at least the first movement we see around it will be executive action,” said Kahn. “That really is because the federal government owes 95 percent of student debt, and the Secretary of Education has the ability to cancel it.”“My stance is that it is not inevitable,” said Neal McClusky, director of the Center for Educational Freedom at the Cato Institute.McClusky believes a third option is that no form of student loan debt forgiveness is passed, while he concedes there is a chance that Biden could issue an executive order forgiving student loan forgiveness. However, he also points out that option could be challenged in the courts with some questioning his authority through the Higher Education Act.“There seems to be straws that he can grab and say, ‘Look, this gives me the authority to just write off this debt.’ Other people say it is not clear in the law that he can do that,” said McClusky. “So, what would be the most likely outcome is that he would try. NEW YORK, N.Y. – Barnes & Noble has warned its customers of a cybersecurity attack which may have exposed consumer information.The bookstore chain informed its customers of the attack in an email Wednesday night, but said their payment information and other financial data has not been compromised, because it’s encrypted and not accessible.However, the email obtained by CNN and Business Insider says the attack resulted in unauthorized access to company systems that do contain customers’ email addresses, billing and shipping addresses, and telephone numbers.The company says it doesn’t currently have evidence that this data has been exposed, but it cannot be ruled out at this stage in the investigation.The company says it learned of the attack on Saturday, Oct. 10.“We take the security of our IT systems extremely seriously and regret sincerely that this incident has occurred,” wrote Barnes & Noble. “We know also that it is concerning and inconvenient to receive notices such as this. NEW YORK (AP) — Facebook says hackers accessed data from 29 million accounts as part of the security breach disclosed two weeks ago.The exact number hadn't been known before. Originally Facebook said 50 million accounts could have been affected, but Facebook didn't know if they had been misused.The hackers accessed name, email addresses or phone numbers from those 29 million accounts. For 14 million of those accounts, hackers got even more data, such as hometown, birthdate, the last 10 places they checked into or 15 most recent searches. One million accounts were affected but hackers didn't gain information. New research may be hard for some dog owners to accept; the study found that dogs do not understand every word a human says to them.The researchers say dogs cannot hear subtle differences between words the way humans can. For example, the difference between “dog” and “dig” sounds different to human ears, but not so different to dog ears.The researchers came to their conclusion after measuring brain activity of family dogs by taping electrodes to the animals’ heads. They then played recordings of instruction words they knew, like “sit,” then similar-sounding nonsense words, like “sut,” and finally an unrelated nonsense word or sound, like “bep.”The dogs in the study, who were not trained ahead of the study, could quickly tell the difference between the instruction words and the unrelated nonsense words."The brain activity is different when they listen to the instructions, which they know, and to the very different nonsense words, which means that dogs recognize these words," lead study author and postdoctoral researcher at E?tv?s Loránd University in Budapest, Lilla Magyari told CNN.So, the good news is, yes, dogs are listening to human words and understanding some.However, brain activity showed a similar reaction in the dogs between the instruction word and the similar nonsense word.Dogs are renowned for their auditory capacity and ability to hear words and sounds, however the results show they may not be able to distinguish between subtle speech sound differences.Magyari says more research is needed to understand why this is."They may just not realize that all details, the speech sounds, are really important in human speech.
