The old king of mobile messaging is coming after the new king.BlackBerry filed a lawsuit in California on Tuesday against Facebook, along with its subsidiaries WhatsApp and Instagram, for infringing on its messaging patents.BlackBerry claims in the lawsuit that the social media companies developed messaging applications that "co-opt BlackBerry's innovations" by using patented features touching on security, the user interface, and battery life."We have a strong claim that Facebook has infringed on our intellectual property, and after several years of dialogue, we also have an obligation to our shareholders to pursue appropriate legal remedies," a spokesperson for BlackBerry said in a statement provided to CNN.Facebook brushed off the suit as little more than a desperate move from a fading company."Blackberry's suit sadly reflects the current state of its messaging business," Paul Grewal, Facebook's deputy general counsel, said in a statement. "Having abandoned its efforts to innovate, BlackBerry is now looking to tax the innovation of others. We intend to fight."Related: Is BlackBerry making a comeback?BlackBerry was an early leader in the messaging market with the success of its smartphones and BlackBerry Messenger product in the mid-2000s.The patents cited in the lawsuit describe foundational elements of today's messaging services. One patent deals with notifications for the total number of unread messages. Other patents address photo tagging and messaging time stamps.BlackBerry is seeking unspecified monetary damages. It also appears to be seeking a partnership."As a cybersecurity and embedded software leader, BlackBerry's view is that Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp could make great partners in our drive toward a securely connected future," the spokesperson said in the statement. "We continue to hold this door open to them."The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. All rights reserved. 1965
The nationwide manhunt for a serial bombmaker targeting prominent Democrats ended with the arrest of a South Florida man on Friday. But that's just the beginning, FBI Director Christopher Wray said. Authorities don't yet know if they've found all of the pipe bombs they say suspect Cesar Sayoc allegedly sent."Today's arrest does not mean we are all out of the woods," Wray said Friday at a news conference. "There may be more packages in transit now."So far, authorities have intercepted at least 14 packages, officials said. Among the targets were former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former US Attorney General Eric Holder, California Senator Kamala Harris, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker and California Rep. Maxine Waters. The most recent bomb connected to Sayoc was addressed to major Democratic donor Tom Steyer. It arrived Friday. 880

The polls are open in at least four states right now for in-person absentee voting, with more opening in the coming weeks. In Virginia, people waited in line for hours to cast their ballots in the presidential election, more than a month before Election Day. Roughly one or two locations per jurisdiction opened Friday, with others planned to open in the coming weeks.Voters told the Washington Post they wanted to turn in their absentee ballot in person this year, rather than mail it in, citing recent concerns about the postal service. In Minnesota, both President Donald Trump and his challenger former Vice President Joe Biden are visiting the state Friday as it kicks off early voting. Polling locations opened around the state to waiting voters.Voters in Wyoming and South Dakota are also able to complete absentee in-person voting beginning Friday.Vermont voters can vote early in-person beginning Monday, and Michigan and Illinois voters can vote early on September 24Several states are also getting ready to mail out ballots in the coming days.Just because ballots are cast early, does not mean they are counted early. Many states have rules that election officials cannot open absentee, or mail-in, ballots until Election Day. With the anticipated increase in this kind of early voting, there is a chance the winner of the presidential race will not be known on Election Day, November 3. 1404
