An operation is underway to evacuate thousands of tourists after a deadly earthquake that rocked some of Indonesia's most idyllic islands late Sunday night. At least 98 people, all Indonesian nationals, were killed when the 6.9 magnitude quake struck the popular tourist island of Lombok, Indonesian authorities said Monday. More than 200 were also injured. The majority of those killed in the quake were hit by falling debris from collapsing buildings, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the head of Indonesia's disaster management department. In total, an estimated 20,000 people have been displaced by the massive earthquake, Nugroho said.Dramatic video tweeted by authorities showed hundreds of people, many believed to be foreign vacationers, crammed onto a beach on the island of Gili Trawangan as evacuation measures got underway.Emergency personnel were racing to evacuate thousands of tourists from the three small Gili Islands as night began to fall. The islands, famous for their white sandy beaches and clear waters, are located near the epicenter of the quake on Lombok.Earlier rescue efforts were hampered by shallow waters, but rising sea waters mean nine ships are now expected to dock on the islands. So far, up to 2,700 tourists have been moved from the Gili Islands, according to Nugroho. He added that Lombok's airport was now open around the clock and had significantly increased its flight schedule. The epicenter of the quake was in northern Lombok, a more residential, less developed part of the island. The majority of Lombok's tourist resorts are on the island's southern coast.British tourist Mike Bennett, stranded on the island of Gili Meno along with around 100 other people, told CNN he faced an anxious night ahead."It's getting dark now," he said. "There's no power, there's no water, we're going to hold out and just see what happens tomorrow."  1879

An Uber driver says she was carjacked at gunpoint in North Las Vegas and ended in Kingman, Arizona. But she wasn't alone.Donnelda Schuele says an innocent passenger was also caught in the middle of the ordeal that crossed state lines."At one point I was thinking, my poor passenger is really gonna die," Schuele said.Schuele's Saturday Uber pool ride almost turned deadly. She said she picked up a passenger through Uber pool -- a service where drivers can pick-up more than one unrelated customer. She then got another 'ping' to pick up a new customer near 5th Street and Lake Mead Boulevard. A man and a woman got into the backseat at that stop. Not long after she started driving, Schuele says the man pulled out a gun."He goes, 'Go straight. I don't care who you hit. Go straight,'" Schuele said.Hopping on the freeway, they started to make their way down to Arizona."Before the Lake Mead exit, he shoots the gun in the car. He shot it through the floor of the car," Schuele said. She says the man also pistol-whipped the other male passenger sitting in the front seat of the car. "He had hit him on the head with the gun and cracked him really good at the back of his skull,"  Schuele said. The man with the gun kept on telling her to drive towards the mountains."He goes, that's where I'm going to be dumping you guys," Schuele said. She says the man shot the gun out the window several times, hitting a commercial truck."The other passenger is flipping out. I mean he is literally flipping out," Schuele said. As they were passing by Hoover Dam, Schuele says the suspect ordered her and the other passenger to get out of the car. That's when they were able to get help.Arizona troopers said the carjackers continued driving south on State Route 93, leading them on a pursuit. Even though they ran over strip spikes, the alleged carjackers did not stop until they crashed into another vehicle. The man and woman tried to run away but troopers were able to catch them at that point. It was the end of a nightmare for Schuele and her passenger."Thank god for my blessings and that I was able to keep a cool head," Schuele said.An Uber spokesperson says it is investigating the incident and will support police investigation in any way it can. 2355

Are you looking for some steaks to throw on the grill this weekend or on the Fourth of July? You may want to bring extra money; the pandemic is sending meat prices up sharply this month.High prices are starting to impact consumers, restaurants, and anyone who cooks meat for their business.Tyrique Ramsey and his family have served his community from a food truck for years, but he was forced to raise prices last week as pork costs skyrocketed."We used to be able to get it for .99 a pound, but now we are almost paying .99 a pound," Ramsey said. While chicken and ground beef prices are higher, the worst is steak, where prices have gone up almost 50% this year on some cuts. for a package of steakAt Walmart, basic strip steaks were a pound, which came to for a package of two small, shrink-wrapped steaks. One of the cheapest cuts of meat, chuck roast, was a pound, almost double from a year ago.Ground beef was in the (fatty) to (lean) a pound range as well, a far cry from the normal summertime price of a pound in many supermarkets.Shopper Jackie Thompson says she can't afford it anymore."I think it's ridiculous, it is totally ridiculous," she said. " for a steak!"At a nearby supermarket, bone-in ribeyes were at a pound, bringing the total to for one steak. Top-dollar cuts like filet mignon were nowhere to be found. The Hutchinson family wondered if short supplies to blame."It's still pretty thin in the meat aisle, for sure," they said.Government blames plant shutdowns and slowdownsThe Bureau of Labor Statistics says processing plant shutdowns continue to cause shortages.Even after those plants reopen, many will be on limited schedules with fewer workers. The Labor report says beef prices rose 11% in May. The average retail price of beef roast rose a whopping 19% during the month. In addition, prices for chicken, tomatoes and even ice cream went up the government said.Restaurants forced to raise pricesRamsey has had to explain why his price board has gone up in recent days, just as many restaurants are raising their menu prices."I just had to go up a few more dollars," he said. "But a lot of the customers, they kind of understand, we explain it to them."Grocery stores insist they are not profiting from rising prices. Still, attorneys general offices in several states are investigating the source of these price hikes, which appear to be linked to processing and slaughterhouse shutdowns due to COVID-19.Until the pandemic subsides, prices could remain on the high side. Anita Hall, along with the Hollywood Commission, will launch a new anonymous reporting platform next year to hold serial harassers in the movie industry accountable.Hill, who made history in October 1991 when she testified before Congress about the alleged sexual harassment she experienced when she was an aide by then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.Twenty-nine years later, Hill is still finding ways to address the abuse and harassment women still face today. The Hollywood Commission, founded by entertainment lawyer Nina Shaw and Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy and Hill chairs, recently spearheaded a survey that found survivors want to track harassment and abuse in the workplace.According to the survey, 93% of the 9,630 anonymous current and former workers in Hollywood said they wanted "technology for victims to create a time-stamped record" that would track harassment and abuse in the workplace. After its findings, the commission announced in September that by the first quarter of 2021, they would launch a cross-industry anonymous reporting platform that would help identify abusers. The platform would also allow users to ask questions or raise concerns through a two-way anonymous messaging system."For too long in Hollywood, there have been 'open secrets' about the harassment perpetrated on workers by powerful people who are able to successfully evade accountability for their actions," said Hill in the press release. "With this survey, we have identified the most vulnerable workers in Hollywood and the resources and systems that will provide support and a safety net for them. Our expectation is that these tools will be the foundation to build a new era of transparency and accountability for all workers in the entertainment industry."According to the press release, the commission will also train 450 entertainment workers through a bystander intervention training program to teach them how to intervene if they see abuse happening. 2016
