SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego nonprofit is hoping to tackle the homeless crisis with a creative solution.The nonprofit, Amikas, envisions a San Diego where every woman and child has a safe place to live in.They hope to build emergency sleeping cabins, which could temporarily house homeless women and children as they look for a permanent place to live. "They're small, they're immediate, they go up in a matter of days, and so we can house a lot of people very quickly with this solution," said Shanna Welsh-Levin, President of Amikas.Designed by San Diego-based Treecycling, the homes are inexpensive and can be built within 24 hours. The cabins are mobile, able to be dismantled within a few hours. "We built these things like houses so they feel like homes," said Gabriel Stafford, with Treecyling. The house built this week is on display at the Meridian Baptist Church in El Cajon. The ultimate goal would be to run a two-year pilot program, creating an emergency cabin village to test the idea. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A winter storm warning was issued for San Diego County’s mountains as a cold storm hit the region Monday..The warning is in place from 8 a.m. Monday through 4 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.“The agency says heavy snow and strong winds are expected. Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the evening commute on Monday. Tree branches could fall as well,” forecasters said.Total snow accumulations of two to six inches are expected with localized amounts of 12 to 18 inches. The heaviest snow is expected to impact areas above 5,500 feet, however, some snow is expected down to 4,500 feet.Accompanying the snow are heavy winds of 20 to 40 miles per hour.RELATED: Check today's forecast in your area“If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” the National Weather Service advised.A high surf advisory also takes the place of a beach hazards statement as the storm approaches. The advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday through 10 a.m. Wednesday for San Diego County coastal areas.Surf begins to build Sunday, peaking Monday afternoon through Tuesday, the agency says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A shark advisory is being issued Tuesday after witnesses reported seeing a five-foot-long shark near Black's Beach. According to Mónica Mu?oz with San Diego Fire-Rescue, the advisory is in place from the Mushroom House north to Bathtub Rock, also known as Flat Rock. “Some witnesses reported seeing a shark of about five feet in length which does not reach the threshold of a significant threat. However, the number of witnesses and the feeding behavior observed influenced the lifeguards’ decision to issue the advisory,” Mu?oz said. Just after 12:30 p.m., a group of 25 surfers got out of the water at Black's Beach after reportedly seeing a shark eating a sea lion. Another group of people reported similar information to a lifeguard. In the same area, Mu?oz says lifeguards witnessed a large sea lion eating a fish. The department says there were either two separate sightings in the area, or witnesses all saw a sea lion feeding on a fish, but mistook it for a shark. “We are acting out of an abundance of caution,” Mu?oz added. Lifeguards are conducting active patrols in the area to let people know what witnesses saw. Mu?oz says lifeguards are advising against water activity; however, the water is not closed to people who choose to enter. Signs will also be posted in the area. 1316

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A young man was trapped in his car after a crash on southbound Interstate 15 at I-805 Monday afternoon.The solo-vehicle crash happened about 1:30 p.m. The man went off the freeway and into a tree, leaving his car a mangled wreck.San Diego Fire Captain Steve Salasz described the rescue as a “complicated effort”.Several firefighters used saws to free the man, whose foot was stuck in a floorboard.The man, who was alert and talking during the rescue, was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital for treatment.There was no word on his condition but Salasz described his injuries as “severe”.Investigators did not release the cause of the crash. 662

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego-based biotech company appears to be making huge strides with its experimental COVID-19 vaccine after testing it on monkeys.Inovio Pharmaceuticals is one of more than 100 companies working on a vaccine. It’s one of few to make it to human clinical trials.“We’re much closer to finding a safe and effective vaccine,” said Dr. Kate Broderick, the VP of Research and Development for Inovio. “We’re so excited and feel so confident about the results we’ve got both in animals and our human clinical trials.”Broderick said clinical trials had shown positive results regarding the safety of Inovio’s experimental vaccine.“Our phase one has been our U.S. based trial, and we’re about to start a trial in China,” she said. “We really are looking to test the vaccine all over the world. The immune responses that these people have generated after getting the vaccine, we’re so pleased with those because they’re really broad.”She said the latest positive development came from testing the vaccine on monkeys in what’s called an Animal Challenge Study.“Those monkeys received their vaccine, then just after four months later they received the virus itself, we were able to show they were protected from that,” she said. “What we were able to show in the lungs, and the nose is that those monkeys really were protected from the symptoms of COVID-19.”It will take some time to ensure all testing is done correctly, and the potential vaccine is safe before it is given to the general public.“Realistically we should be looking at a vaccine being available for certain members of the public at the end of 2021,” she said. “Most vaccines historically take 5 to 10 years to be generated and developed; this is really a short time frame.”Broderick, a busy working mom with two young kids at home, hopes the positive results will ease the minds of those anxiously waiting to get back to normal.“I do just want to let you know there is light at the end of the tunnel; there is hope out there,” she said. “Our vaccine is looking very promising there’s other vaccines out there that are looking very good.” 2123
