SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A new indictment unsealed Thursday against the owner/operators of San Diego-based pornographic website GirlsDoPorn.com alleges that co-owner Michael James Pratt -- who remains on the lam on federal sex trafficking charges -- also produced pornographic content involving a 16-year- old girl. Pratt was charged in a complaint last month along with three others with sex trafficking by force, fraud and coercion for allegedly filming victims under the guise of distributing the videos only to private clients, then disseminating the videos online without the victims' knowledge or consent. The new indictment adds two additional defendants and charges of production of child pornography and sex trafficking of a minor against Pratt alone, with the incidents allegedly occurring in September 2012. RELATED: San Diego porn case: Civil trial against GirlsDoPorn.com website operators beginsThe indictment also names website co-owner Matthew Isaac Wolfe; porn actor Ruben Andre Garcia; administrative assistant Valorie Moser; Amberlyn Dee Nored, allegedly one of the reference women accused of lying to victims about the nature of the work; and a sixth defendant whose name is redacted. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, numerous young women who initially responded to ads for modeling jobs were allegedly deceived by the defendants to appear in adult films. Once the victims learned the work involved pornography, the defendants allegedly told them the videos would be distributed to private clients -- usually living overseas -- and not disseminated on the internet. To help convince the women to participate, reference women like Nored were allegedly hired to lie to the women and claim they had also filmed pornographic videos for the defendants, which were never posted on the internet. RELATED: San Diego porn site owners, employees charged with sex traffickingProsecutors allege the women were ``pressured into signing documents without reviewing them and then threatened with legal action or outing if they failed to perform.'' Others were not allowed to leave the shoots -- which were conducted at various San Diego hotels -- until the videos were completed, which sometimes involved sex acts the victims initially declined to perform, prosecutors allege. The defendants are also currently involved in a San Diego civil trial involving a lawsuit filed by 22 women who appeared in videos on the site. The allegations in that trial -- which began in mid-August -- mirror the new federal charges. In that case, the victims are seeking more than million in damages and ownership rights to the videos they appeared in. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Eight more flu deaths were reported last week in the San Diego region, the county Health and Human Services Agency announced Wednesday. There were 264 lab-confirmed cases in total, a slight increase over the 257 cases reported the week of March 25. Emergency room visits by people with flu-like symptoms dropped from 3 percent to 2 percent over the same span, however.Overall, there have been 334 influenza-related deaths in San Diego County this season, compared to 82 during the same period last flu season.Victims have ranged in age from 1 to 101, and most had underlying medical conditions."Unfortunately, influenza-related deaths are still being reported, a sign that the flu continues to take a toll on the region," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer . "While influenza activitypersists, people should continue taking precautions to avoid getting sick, especially getting vaccinated."The high number of deaths this season is related to unusually severe strains of the virus but also improved tracking by local medical communities, according to the county. Overall, there have been 20,404 lab-confirmed cases this season, compared to 5,292 cases this time last year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reminds people that it isn't too late to get vaccinated against the flu. In addition, health experts recommend frequent hand-washing, use of hand sanitizers, avoiding contact with sick people and cleaning commonly touched surfaces. Those with high risk to develop serious flu symptoms include people with chronic medical conditions, pregnant women and people 65 or older. 1636

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego molecular diagnostic company announced Thursday it has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to fund development of its coronavirus diagnostic test, which the company says would provide results in about 30 minutes.Mesa Biotech Inc. will receive both 1,330 in funding and "technical expertise" from the HHS's Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority -- or BARDA -- to complete developmental work needed to obtain Emergency Use Authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA's emergency authorizations fast-track unapproved medical products for use during a public health emergency.Mesa says its Accula SARS-CoV-2 test utilizes throat swabs to detect SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19."As the coronavirus situation escalates and the demand for testing far exceeds capacity, we are encouraged by the support of HHS in the development of our Accula SARS-CoV-2 Test," said Hong Cai, Mesa Biotech's co- founder and CEO."Our test, which was developed to enable rapid responses to global pandemics, will significantly compress the sample-to-result timeframe with a laboratory-quality test at the point-of-care," Cai said. "This accelerated response will enable health care providers to rapidly screen, isolate, treat or dismiss potential carriers of the virus."In the past week, three companies with local laboratories received emergency approval from the FDA to supply COVID-19 detection tests, including Hologic Inc. and Quidel Corp. in San Diego, and Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. in Carlsbad.Mesa Biotech's diagnostic test is one of four to receive funding from BARDA, according to the agency."Diagnostics are a critical need in the overall strategy to fight this newest global public health threat," BARDA Director Rick A. Bright said. "We need increased testing capacity in the U.S. to rapidly identify, isolate and treat those infected with COVID-19 in order to limit transmission of the virus, and we need those tests as close to the patients as possible."Currently, no FDA-approved diagnostics, vaccines or treatments for COVID-19 are available. 2168
