LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Police Department has opened an internal affairs investigation into a front desk officer's response in the aftermath of rapper Nipsey Hussle's murder.The department's Office of the Inspector General confirmed Monday an investigation was underway.Grand jury testimony shows the woman who drove the alleged shooter, Eric Holder, from the scene had gone to the 77th Street station because her car was on the news. She was turned away by a desk officer who told her not to worry about it.The woman was able to speak to detectives later. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rapper 21 Savage says he will launch a free online financial literacy education program for youth sheltered at home during the coronavirus pandemic. The Grammy winner announced his new Bank Account At Home nationwide initiative on Wednesday. His efforts will include a partnership with Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms to provide free WiFi and tablets for underserved students in the city. 21 Savage says he wants to empower youth to manage their money. His program will work with mobile banking service provider Chime and EverFi, an education technology platform. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Health officials say the number of coronavirus cases in California is surging to the highest level since the start of the pandemic. The California Department of Health and Human Services reported more than 15,000 cases Saturday and another 14,000 cases on Sunday. A curfew took effect Saturday requiring people to stay home from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. affecting most Californians, and Los Angeles is on the verge of an even tougher lockdown. LOS ANGELES (AP) — When Steven Spielberg speaks about the business of Hollywood, everyone generally listens and few dissent. But reports that he intends to support rule changes that could block Netflix from Oscars-eligibility have provoked a heated, and unwieldy, debate online. It has found the legendary filmmaker at odds with some industry heavyweights, who have pointed out that Netflix has been an important supporter of minority filmmakers and stories, especially in awards campaigns, while also reigniting the ongoing streaming versus theatrical debate.Spielberg has weighed in before on whether streaming movies should compete for the film industry's most prestigious award (TV movies, he said last year, should compete for Emmys), but that was before Netflix nearly succeeded in getting its first best picture Oscar for Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma" at last week's Academy Awards. Netflix, of course, did not win the top award — "Green Book," which was produced partially by Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, did.Still, Netflix was a legitimate contender and this year, the streaming service is likely to step up its awards game even more with Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman," which The Hollywood Reporter said may also gunning for a wide-theatrical release. A teaser ad aired during the 91st Oscars for the gangster drama said "in theaters next fall," instead of the "in select theaters" phrasing that was used for "Roma."But Netflix also isn't playing by the same rules as other studios. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A new COVID-19 testing site will open at Dodger Stadium Tuesday, which city officials say will accommodate three times more people than any other testing site in Los Angeles County.Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas and Dodgers CEO Stan Kasten will be on hand for the site's official opening at 10 a.m.In announcing the center on Friday, Garcetti said health officials would be testing as many as 6,000 people a day at the new location."I know that we all have fond memories of summer nights at Chavez Ravine, taking in a game and cheering on our boys in blue. Now, even with baseball season on hold, we can still go to the stadium to find help and hope," Garcetti said. "And we have specifically designed this site to move people through the process quickly, alleviating long lines and wait times."Video screens will show footage of how the test works to drivers waiting in line, in an effort to make testing quick and keep lines moving.Any Los Angeles County resident can get tested for free, but must make an appointment online ahead of time.
