WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. remains in the grip of the coronavirus pandemic with more than 8 million cases, spiking in multiple states, like Montana.“There are many, many people not taking this seriously and not playing their part in mitigating the spread of this virus,” said Trisha Gardner, Cascade City-County, Montana health officer.Now, there are concerns that getting COVID-19 could land you in the same category as someone with diabetes or high-blood pressure – having a preexisting condition.“This has flown under the radar to some extent,” said Dr. Eric Schneider, senior vice president of policy and research at The Commonwealth Fund, a century-old foundation that examines health policy in the U.S.Since COVID-19 can have lingering effects on people who contract it, Dr. Schenider says there’s a possibility it could be labeled as a preexisting condition.So, who decides that?“The preexisting condition language really traces to the insurance industry,” Dr. Schneider said, “really on a case by case basis, which diseases, which conditions, will actually count.”That hasn’t mattered so much lately because the Affordable Care Act – Obamacare – prohibits health insurers from denying people coverage based on preexisting conditions.Next month, though, a case before the U.S. Supreme Court could get Obamacare thrown out.If that happens, there is no official plan yet from either party to replace it, nor to protect people with preexisting conditions.“If the Supreme Court undoes that solution, there will definitely be a need for a new solution,” Dr. Schneider said.How many could be affected?The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says about 133 million people in the country currently have a preexisting condition. The Commonwealth Fund looked at how COVID-19 survivors would affect that number.Researchers excluded people who already had a preexisting condition before contracting the coronavirus, as well as anyone over the age of 65. They found that 3.4 million people who recovered from the coronavirus but never had a preexisting condition before could join the ranks of now having a preexisting condition.What’s more, based on current COVID-19 infection rates, that number is growing in the U.S. by 20,000 people a day.“That number is also tied to how well we control the pandemic,” Dr. Schneider said.So far, no insurance company has indicated it will add COVID-19 as a potential preexisting condition.However, health care policy experts warn it could all come down to what the justices decide about the health care law in next month’s case before the Supreme Court. 2603
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A group of bipartisan lawmakers unveiled two emergency relief bills Monday that they hope will help struggling Americans get through the COVID-19 pandemic.The same group of senators and representatives introduced a 8 billion bill earlier this month, but they couldn’t secure enough support. So, they broke the bill up into two with the hopes of passing something as the coronavirus continues to ravage the country.One bill is called the Bipartisan COVID-19 Emergency Relief Act of 2020. It would provide as much as 8 billion in relief to American students, families, businesses, workers, and health care providers.That measure would include additional funding for the Paycheck Protection Program, schools, unemployment insurance, vaccine distribution, coronavirus testing, and contact tracing.The other bill is called the Bipartisan State and Local Support and Small Business Protection Act of 2020. It would provide 0 billion in funding for state and local governments, as well as liability protections. Both of those issues have been sticking points in relief negotiations.During a press conference introducing the legislation, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) said the bills are a compromise that will carry the American people through April 1, 2021, “to ensure our healthcare crisis doesn’t become an economic catastrophe.”Sen. WASHINGTON, D.C. – The federal eviction moratorium is set to expire Friday, putting millions of Americans at risk of being kicked out of their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.The CARES Act provided certain protections from eviction and late fees due to nonpayment of rent for most tenants in federally subsidized or federally backed housing. However, those protections were only in effect from March 27 to July 24.When the moratorium ends, landlords can give tenants who haven’t paid rent 30 days’ notice and then begin filing eviction paperwork in late August.The Urban Institute estimates that the eviction moratorium applied to about 12.3 million of the 43.8 million rental units in the United States, or around 28%. If the protections are not extended, those 12.3 million renters could be at risk.So far, there aren’t any plans to extend the moratorium.However, The Washington Post reports that the House has passed legislation to create a 0 billion rental assistance fund, which would help renters at the lowest income levels for up to two years. The Senate hasn't acted on that bill. The Trump administration and Senate Republicans are hurrying to present a new coronavirus relief bill of their own before the end of the session, but it doesn’t yet appear to include protections for renters. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is expected to roll out the GOP’s bill next week, The Post reports.The expiration of the eviction moratorium comes as communities across the U.S. see spikes in coronavirus cases, especially in the south and west. WASHINGTON, D.C. – The White House is blocking the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from testifying before a House committee on how to safely reopen schools amid the COVID-19 pandemic.Chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee Bobby Scott (D-Va.) said Friday that representatives asked for the CDC to testify in a public hearing next week to provide greater clarity on the steps that lawmakers can take to help schools educate students in a safe way, but the Trump administration blocked them.“It is alarming that the Trump administration is preventing the CDC from appearing before the Committee at a time when its expertise and guidance is so critical to the health and safety of students, parents, and educators,” wrote Scott in a statement. “This lack of transparency does a great disservice to the many communities across the country facing difficult decisions about reopening schools this fall.”Scott accused the Trump administration of prioritizing politics over science and harming the country in the process.“It should not make that same mistake when it comes to reopening schools,” said Scott.A White House official confirmed to CNN and The Hill that the administration is blocking the CDC’s participation in the hearing, saying the agency’s director, Dr. Robert Redfield, has testified at least four time over the last three months and suggested he and other doctors need to focus on the pandemic response.However, a spokesperson for the House committee told CNN that the panel had requested a testimony from any CDC official and it wasn’t exclusive to Redfield.The White House’s block comes at a time when Americans are debating whether sending children back to physical classrooms is a good idea, amid a surge in COVID-19 cases.
