President Donald Trump applauded reports Thursday that Senator-elect Tommy Tuberville, R-Alabama, could team up with an Alabama congressman in an extremely unlikely, last-ditch effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election. In a series of tweets on Thursday, Trump called Tuberville a "hero" and "a man of courage."Despite producing little evidence to support his claims, Trump has claimed there was widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election and has falsely claimed victory over President-elect Joe Biden.Trump's efforts to overturn the results of the election have been shot down by courts in every battleground state, federal appeals courts and the Supreme Court. Furthermore, every state has certified the results of their elections, and the Electoral College has already sealed Biden's win. However, some Republicans believe they'll be able to overturn the results of the election on Jan. 6, when Congress meets to certify the Electoral College results. It's a process that is typically a little more than a rubber stamp approval, but Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Alabama, has promised to raise an objection. Should a senator — like Tuberville — join in Brooks' objection, both the House and the Senate would then be forced to take a vote. If both chambers approve of the objection, the Electoral College votes could be thrown out. While Tuberville's objection could cause a slight delay in approving the Electoral College results, most experts believe that it would be "impossible" to overturn the election results through this process. Democrats control the House of Representatives, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he does not want Republican senators further challenging election results.Tuberville will be sworn in as a Senator on Jan. 3 — just three days before Congress meets to approve the Electoral College vote. By defying McConnell in one of his first official acts as a Senator, Tuberville risks losing the support of one of the most powerful lawmakers in Washington. However, his recent comments indicate that he plans to object to the Electoral College vote."You'll see what's coming," Tuberville said this week. "You've been reading about in the House. We're going to have to do it in the Senate."Other GOP senators have not said whether they plan to voice an objection.Tuberville, a former college football coach at Ole Miss, Auburn, Texas Tech and Cincinnati, defeated Sen. Doug Jones, D-Alabama, in November.Democrats in the House filed similar objections in 2001, 2005, and 2017. None were voted upon. 2544

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he’ll do “whatever it takes” to win when asked if he would use his own money to fund his campaign this fall. This comes despite a combined .1 billion being raised between the Republican National Committee and Trump campaign this election cycle as of July 31. The question on whether Trump would partially fund his own campaign came after a New York Times story released on Monday outlined the campaign’s bank account drying up in recent weeks. The report showed that despite a huge fundraising haul, the campaign has spent much of it going into the stretch run of the campaign.“If we needed any more, I'd put it up personally, like I did in the primaries last time,” Trump said. “In the 2016 primaries, I put up a lot of money. If I have to, I'll do it here. But we don’t have to because we have double and maybe even triple what we had a number of years ago -- four years ago.”In 2016, Trump spent million, which paid for roughly 20% of his election bid.But the Trump campaign was well-funded going into 2020 as the president took the unusual step of filing for re-election at the same time he was inaugurated. But the once huge advantage Trump enjoyed in funding has been evaporating. Trump, in part, blamed COVID-19 and Democrats. Trump had the advantage of having a full war chest during the primary season as Biden’s campaign nearly went broke in the days leading up to his surprising come back in South Carolina and on Super Tuesday.“We needed to spend more money up front because of the pandemic and the statements being made by Democrats, which were, again, disinformation,” Trump said. The New York Times reported that the campaign was looking at scaling back its spending. The New York Times previously reported that the Trump campaign was scaling back its TV presence. The move to curtail spending comes as there are still a number of states still in play for both candidates. While Trump has his eyes set at flipping Minnesota and Nevada from blue to red, Biden is going after a large number of states won by Trump in 2016, including Georgia, Arizona, North Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. The more states in play, the more expensive the election becomes. 2247

President Donald Trump is expected to nominate State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert to be his new ambassador to the UN, positioning a relatively inexperienced newcomer in one of the most high-profile positions in US diplomacy, according to an administration official and a second source. The announcement is expected to come on Friday, two officials say.In an administration rife with internal conflict and deeply distrustful of the UN, Nauert's nomination would place a less senior person at the international agency than outspoken current ambassador Nikki Haley, who reportedly sparred with other administration officials. The former Fox News host's precipitous rise since arriving at the State Department in 2017 sets the stage for a potentially tough Senate confirmation hearing, where Democrats will likely grill Nauert on her qualifications for the position. The nomination was first reported by Bloomberg News.  935

President Donald Trump briefly appeared before reporters Thursday to tout June's job report as coronavirus cases continue to spike across the country.Trump said the report — which was released about an hour before the briefing — showed an increase in consumer confidence. He also touted big gains in the stock market, which just closed one of its best quarters in decades."It's coming back bigger and faster," Trump said. The briefing came a day after Johns Hopkins reported that the U.S. reported its highest single-day increase in new COVID-19 cases."We have some areas where we're putting out the flames or the fires, and that's working out well," Trump said. "I think you'll see that shortly."Trump left the briefing room without taking questions from reporters. Director of the United States National Economic Council Larry Kudlow and Treasury Sec. Steve Mnuchin took questions following Trump's departure.Mnuchin said that he feels states are "acting appropriately" in pausing some aspects of their reopening processes, and said that the Trump administration encourages all Americans to wear a mask. However, he added that he does not feel Trump needs to wear a mask because those who work with him daily are regularly tested for the virus.Mnuchin added that he believed that "most" schools would be able to open normally in the fall and that the administration was investigating ways to get federal funds to schools to facilitate reopening."We want to make sure kids are safe," Mnuchin said. 1505

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Australian Archbishop Philip Wilson of Adelaide, the highest-ranking Catholic official ever to be convicted of covering up sex abuse. The Vatican made the announcement in a statement sent to CNN on Monday.Wilson, 67, was found guilty in May of concealing the abuse of altar boys in the 1970s by pedophile priest James Fletcher.Last week he said that he intended to appeal the ruling under the "due process of law.""Since that process is not yet complete, I do not intend to resign at this time. However, if I am unsuccessful in my appeal, I will immediately offer my resignation to the Holy See," he said.Wilson had been spared prison earlier in July and sentenced to six months' home detention in Australia because of his poor health and advanced age. There will be a hearing on August 14 to determine whether home detention is appropriate for Wilson and where he could stay, with his sister's house raised as one option. The ruling against Wilson was a landmark conviction that could have far-reaching implications for other clergy members as the child sexual abuse scandal continues to hit the Catholic Church globally.Last week Pope Francis accepted the resignation of another senior Church official, Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who once led the Archdiocese of Washington and was a force in American politics, after a decades-old allegation of sexual abuse of a teenage altar boy forced the Vatican to remove him from public ministry. The Vatican said Saturday that Pope Francis accepted McCarrick's resignation from the College of Cardinals on Friday evening and ordered him to "a life of prayer and penance until the accusations made against him are examined in a regular canonical trial." 1745
