SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - President Trump issued an order Monday prohibiting Broadcom’s attempt to take over San Diego-based Qualcomm, citing national security.Broadcom had made several efforts to buy the chip maker in recent months. All offers were rejected by Qualcomm, which said the bids undervalued the company. The most recent offer, made in February, was over 1 billion. RELATED: Qualcomm delays shareholder vote on Broadcom takeoverThe possible takeover raised security concerns and led to an investigation by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. In Monday's release, President Trump reportedly cited national security concerns."There is credible evidence that leads me to believe that Broadcom Ltd. ... might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States," the president said in a release, Bloomberg reported. The concerns echo issues voiced in a letter to Trump by Congressman Duncan Hunter, who serves California's 50th District including much of San Diego's East County.RELATED: Paul Jacobs leaves Qualcomm's executive management"I have seen San Diego defense companies suffer massive theft of intellectual property by agents of China’s government and the defense industrial complex with which it is inextricably entwined," Hunter said in a release. "Fact remains, if Broadcom consumes Qualcomm, theft of their intellectual property by China becomes easier.Singapore-based Broadcom has voiced the intention to move its headquarters to the U.S. to ease concerns over the proposed takeover. Hunter responded to that intention saying, "press releases of intentions is not the same as physical action."The takeover attempts coincided with changes in corporate leadership.RELATED: Qualcomm rejects Broadcom's 'best and final' offerOn Friday, Qualcomm announced executive Paul Jacobs -- the son of Qualcomm founder Irwin Jacobs - "will no longer serve in an executive management capacity" but "will continue to serve on the Qualcomm Board."Under the terms of the Presidential Order, all of Broadcom’s director nominees are also disqualified from standing for election as directors of Qualcomm, according to the company.Qualcomm was also ordered to reconvene its 2018 Annual Meeting of Stockholders on the earliest possible date, which is March 23.If Broadcom had been allowed to buy Qualcomm, it would have made the firm the world’s third-largest chip company behind Intel and Samsung.Any buyout would also have had a significant impact on San Diego's economy. Qualcomm was founded in 1985 and is one of the region's largest employers. It employs more than 33,000 people worldwide. 2684

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of the joys of Christmas is waking up to a stocking filled with gifts. As a child, it's part of the wonder and magic of Santa.Even as we grow up, many people keep the tradition alive, simply because a Christmas stocking touches the child in all of us.And it's from that attachment, that an act of kindness was born.As a teenager, Jane Wesley Brooks began filling Christmas stockings for the homeless, and delivering them to those on the streets each Christmas Eve.Over 40 years, she has passed out thousands of stockings filled with caps, mittens, socks, shampoos, magazines, and even playing cards. Any small item that is new, clean and useful for those without a home.We surprised Jane with 10News Leadership Award. She accepts any appropriate new item at her law office all year long. Magazines are the only exception. They can be gently read prior to delivery. Here’s where you can donate:Jane Wesley Brooks, CFLSJWB Family Law1620 Fifth Avenue, Suite 600San Diego, CA 92101Phone: 619-234-6123 1026

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Opening statements started Wednesday in the trial of a father accused of killing his two children in a fire at his Rancho Bernardo condo in 2017. Investigators said Henry Lopez passed out drunk with a lit cigarette, starting a fire that spread to the rest of the home. His children, 10-year-old Cristos and 7-year-old Isabella, died as a result of smoke inhalation. Lopez was also hospitalized with burns. Lopez’ ex-wife Nikia testified at his preliminary hearing in February 2018, saying the couple was in the custody of a divorce. Nikia Lopez also said her ex-spouse was an abusive alcoholic. RELATED: Mother opens up about children killed in fire"He drank a lot. My goal was to keep it from the kids. I would wake up in the middle of the night and throw away the bottles in the trash. I would pull him upstairs before the kids woke in the morning... sometimes I would have to clean up his throw up,” Nikia Lopez said in earlier testimony. Lopez faces up to 14 years in prison for several felony counts including involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment. 1090

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Monday, San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott announced that the courts officially ordered the closure of a notorious independent living facility home off Ewing Street in the College Area, following a lawsuit brought by the City last November.“The circumstances were egregious,” Elliott told ABC 10News on Monday. She said the facility is no longer allowed to operate anywhere in San Diego County.“It was filthy. There were bed bugs. There were roaches. The air quality was not good,” she added. Officers had reportedly been called out nearly 300 times for issues like disturbing the peace and suicide threats. Now, the facility’s manager, operator and owners are ordered to pay a collective 7,000 in fines and restitution for victims.Eric Ching represents the homeowners who claim they had no idea the property was being used as an independent living facility. “They’re in Hong Kong. They’re elderly…they own this property [and] have a property manager that was supposed to manage this property. They were unaware of this problem until last year,” he told ABC 10News.Generally, independent living facilities provide the most vulnerable people with a last chance for housing before becoming homeless. This house had ten people living inside using disability checks to pay rent of up to ,000 a month.Elliott said the closure was part of a bigger crackdown. “It is one of our biggest objectives at the City Attorney's Office. We feel like we're the office that can stand up for the little guy…the most vulnerable [person] who otherwise would have nobody else to call,” she added.Elliott said that the facility’s operator, Mark Rogers, is charged with elder abuse and threats in a separate criminal case, which is still unresolved in the courts.ABC 10 News reached out to the attorneys for the other parties involved and are waiting for replies. 1875
