DENVER, Colo. — Several Denver police officers stepped up to make sure the daughter of a fallen detective had the perfect wedding. “That was a really hard thing to think about, walking down the aisle without him,” Kourtney Krietemeier told KMGH. Her father, Denver Police Det. Donnie Young, was killed in the line of duty in 2005.Her aunt recommended having some of Young’s former colleagues walk her down the aisle and her mother offered to step in for the father-daughter dance. On her wedding day, she danced with her mother for a few minutes, but when the song changed — to one she instantly recognized — she knew something was up. “When I was super young, my dad got me a small replica of his badge with his badge number on it and he played that song when he gave it to me,” she said. “I was shocked. I just knew the tears were going to be flowing.”One of the Denver police officers who worked with her father took her mother's spot and danced with her. One by one, her father's multiple former colleagues took their turn dancing with the bride. She said they told her things she would have heard from her father that day — how proud they were of her, how excited they were for her. And how special her father was to them. COLORADO — Riders on rentable scooters getting them from Point A to Point B around cities in America may not be thinking about something big: The germs.When our reporters talked to folks riding on them, they guessed the handles could be pretty germ-ridden.Our reporters looked at public bikes, too, and did some swab tests, which were taken to a lab. The goal was to find out what bacteria may be found on the scooters.The team tested for stapholococous, E. coli, general bacteria levels, yeast and mold.The results were surprising.“My initial action was surprise,” said Microbiologist Helene Ver Ecke, of Metro State University. She knows all about bacteria."Some were a lot cleaner and some were a lot dirtier,” Ver Ecke said of the tests.One group of scooters had:? 700 bacteria colonies? No E. coli or strep? "You have normal yeasts and molds on our hands we ingest yeast and mold, that's what makes us bread and beer and all kinds of things. So not all fungus are bad,” Ver Ecke said.The tests make the germ issue seem pretty bad, but there is bacteria everywhere, and it’s not all bad, she said.People were surprised there wasn’t more bacteria.Ver Ecke said it’s because there isn’t food present, which would provide moisture for bacteria to feed on. The bacteria is probably going away pretty quickly, she said."The variation that we've seen may be indicative of how long a time period it was since the last person rode it,” Ver Ecke said.Cleaning it off may be a waste of time, she said. Trump, however, restored Gallagher’s rank this month.The situation escalated again in recent days.On Wednesday, the Navy had notified Gallagher that he would face a Navy SEAL review board to determine if he should be allowed to remain in the elite force. While Trump then tweeted that he would not allow the Navy to remove Gallagher from the SEALs by taking away his Trident Pin, which designates a SEAL member, the White House told the Navy it could proceed as planned, according to a Navy officer who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters.That initially appeared to defuse the situation. The Navy SEAL review board was due to hear Gallagher’s case on Dec. 2.Spencer, speaking Saturday at an international security forum in Halifax, Nova Scotia, said that he did not consider a tweet by Trump a formal order to stop the Navy review board.“I need a formal order to act,” Spencer said. Drinking coffee could activate the body's fat-fighting defenses, a discovery that could have potential implications in the battle against obesity and diabetes.In a study published Monday, researchers at the University of Nottingham said that coffee may help stimulate our brown fat reserves, also known as brown adipose tissue, which play a key role in how quickly we can burn calories.There are two forms of fat cells, brown cells and white cells, and each plays a different role in our metabolism.While brown cells help generate heat, white cells are responsible for the storage of fat -- or, energy -- ready for release as needed. Levels of brown fat are known to be high in children but recent findings on the presence of brown fat in adults has restored hope to use them as targets to treat obesity."Brown fat works in a different way to other fat in your body and produces heat by burning sugar and fat, often in response to cold, said professor Michael Symonds, from the School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham, who co-directed the study."Increasing its activity improves blood sugar control as well as improving blood lipid levels and the extra calories burnt help with weight loss. However, until now, no one has found an acceptable way to stimulate its activity in humans."The scientists started by testing out coffee on stem cells to see if it would stimulate brown fat. Once they found the right dose, they moved on to humans to see if the results were similar.The team used a thermal imaging technique on four men and five women to trace the brown fat reserves and see how it produced heat."From our previous work, we knew that brown fat is mainly located in the neck region, so we were able to image someone straight after they had a drink to see if the brown fat got hotter," Symonds said.So will drinking a cup of coffee help you lose weight, as well as get out of bed?The study only involved nine people and the research is still at a very early stage.
