SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Veterinarians with the San Diego Humane Society say too many pets are packing on extra pounds.The shelter sees overweight pets every day and recently received a 26-pound cat named Angelo; his family could no longer care for him. "Even though a lot of people may perceive him to be cute or funny, for us it's alarming to see an animal this size," said Dr. Danielle Clem, Hospital Director for the San Diego Campus.Overweight pets like Angelo are at risk for health complications like diabetes and severe arthritis."I really am a firm believer that good pet care starts with what you put in their food dish - and it's as simple as that," said Dr. Clem.Hospital staff put Angelo on a strict diet and began to encourage exercise. But Dr. Clem warns that if your pet needs to lose weight, it should be done under veterinarian supervision. "Cats losing weight too rapidly can actually be very dangerous."While Angelo has already been adopted, SDHS officials invite people to meet other cats during adopt-a-shelter-cat month. 1045

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With California's theme parks and other family activities closed or restricted because of the pandemic, pumpkin patches have become an even more popular source of seasonal joy.The patches are able to operate under certain restrictions, though some operating rides may be at odds with public health orders.Cell phone video taken this week at The Pumpkin Station on Camino del Rio South in Mission Valley shows lots of visitors, some wearing masks and others not, and some small rides operating.The owner of the patch told ABC 10News they have a capacity limit of 250 people and require employees to undergo temperature checks and wear face masks. The owner said the location can't make customers wear face masks if they don't want to. As for the rides, the owner said calls to the San Diego County Health Department about whether rides are allowed were not returned. The owner said the rides are sanitized between each use as well.The county referred ABC 10News to California's guidelines for amusement and theme parks, which says all operations must be closed in the red and purple reopening tiers. San Diego County is currently in the red tier.As for other spots, like the Strawberry Fields in Carlsbad, there are no rides but there are inflatables.The owner of Carlsbad Lagoon tells ABC 10News that they've been working with the county ever since they reopened and that there are no specific guidelines for inflatables. The county says that as long as they are not completely closed, things like inflatables, slides, and obstacle courses are allowed.Carlsbad Lagoon added that they sanitize frequently and restrict admission to adhere to social distancing guidance. 1694

While this is typical for a San Diego summer, there is one major difference in 2020.“We’re very conscious about crowds,” said Encinitas local Jennifer Marakovits.She and her husband Joe visited Del Mar Saturday afternoon. The two brought their own masks and sat watching the crowds from a distance.“It’s a matter of life or death and wearing a mask to me, it’s worth it,” said Joe.RELATED: Del Mar hiring more officials to enforce mask policies, ,000 fine possibleNearby, a Sheriff's deputy walked around. This is a new addition to the area. Del Mar’s city council voted to spend ,000 through the next four months to bring in extra deputies to help with mask and social distancing enforcement. Prior to this decision, one single deputy worked at a time, and with thousands of people visiting every day, the decision was made to help enforce county orders. The deputies will work a few four-hour shifts a week, changing the time, place, and location depending on the day.The deputy out Saturday afternoon held a stack of informational pamphlets and a box of face masks, which he handed out to anyone not wearing a mask who passed him. The goal is to keep the extra deputy taking educational actions similar to this, however, they could issue a citation that could cost up to ,000 for a violation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With the rapid growth of plant-based meats across the country, businesses in San Diego have been expanding to meet demand.Plant Power, a San Diego-based vegan fast-food chain, announced it would be expanding to four new locations in Southern California in the next 16 months.Founded in 2016, Plant Power currently has locations in Ocean Beach, Encinitas, Redlands, SDSU and Long Beach. The new sites will be in Riverside, Orange County, the Inland Empire and another in San Diego, bringing it to a total of nine locations.Last month, they also debuted a new food truck in Los Angeles.“Consumers are enthusiastic about embracing a healthier, more sustainable take on traditional fast food,” said Mitch Wallis, President and Co-CEO of Plant Power Fast Food.“Fast food doesn’t have to be unhealthy for our bodies or bad for the planet. We’re here to demonstrate that there’s a better way,” he added.The plant-based craze hasn’t been contained just to vegan eateries. It was a momentary break from the last two-and-a-half months when she's been worried about many things, least of all herself.On August 15, Caceres gave birth to her son Santino at 29 weeks. He's been in the NICU at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital ever since."Very traumatizing, honestly," Caceres said over the hum of hair dryers at Robert Cromeans Salon downtown. "I don't take time for myself really," she said. "It's really cool they did this, honestly."Caceres was one of eight NICU moms treated to a hair and makeup makeover at the salon Monday during an event organized by March of Dimes.The event came on the same day the March of Dimes released a report card showing the premature birth rate in the U.S. rose for the fourth straight year to 10.02 percent.Preterm birth rates worsened in 30 states. California fared better than the national average. In San Diego County, the rate actually improved year-over-year to 8.4 percent.It's still largely a mystery why some women deliver early.
