A non-profit in California has developed a way to capture poachers who snatch sea turtle eggs - building lookalike eggs with GPS trackers constructed inside them.According to research published Monday in the journal Current Biology, the InvestEGGator is a 3D-printed life-like turtle egg that can be tracked as far away as 137 kilometers (85 miles)."It replicates the appearance, weight, and feel of a real turtle egg. It is easily deployed at low risk to investigators, can be programmed and monitored remotely using web-based and smartphone applications, and is a low cost, allowing for deployment of many units at once," the company said on its website.The decoy eggs are placed in real nests alongside real eggs, which are monitored and mapped every time they are moved, said the Ventura-based Paso Pacífico, the non-profit that developed the eggs.The research showed that the decoy eggs provide a signal once every hour."Using data provided by the decoys, we identified trafficking routes and on two occasions properties of potential interest to law enforcement," researchers said in the journal. A new grand jury report says that internal documents from six Catholic dioceses in Pennsylvania show that more than 300 "predator priests" have been credibly accused of sexually abusing more than 1,000 child victims."We believe that the real number of children whose records were lost or who were afraid ever to come forward is in the thousands," the grand jury report says."Priests were raping little boys and girls, and the men of God who were responsible for them not only did nothing; they hid it all. For decades. Monsignors, auxiliary bishops, bishops, archbishops, cardinals have mostly been protected; many, including some named in this report, have been promoted. Until that changes, we think it is too early to close the book on the Catholic Church sex scandal."The lengthy report, released Tuesday afternoon, investigates clergy sexual abuse in six dioceses dating back to 1947. Pennsylvania's two other dioceses, Philadelphia and Altoona-Johnstown, were the subjects of earlier grand jury reports, which found similarly damaging information about clergy and bishops in those dioceses."There have been other reports about child sex abuse within the Catholic Church. A settlement has been reached in a civil lawsuit against multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein in Palm Beach County.An attorney for Bradley Edwards, who was seeking unspecified damages from Epstein, announced in court on Tuesday that a financial settlement has been reached, but the details are confidential.The deal came on the same day jury selection was set to begin in the civil case.Epstein was accused of luring underage girls into a life of sexual abuse. A Northern California family was forced to evacuate their home over the weekend, as the Carr wildfire continues to spread. Not only was the family tasked with getting themselves out, they also had to evacuate the animals on their rescue farm.Lisa Ellsworth runs Tiny Tim’s Pals, a pet rescue farm in El Dorado Hills, California.“It’s our family, yeah,” says Ellsworth. "We take ‘em in from—sometimes they’ve been abandoned; a lot have been abused, neglected.”This weekend, those animals needed to be rescued from their sanctuary, as the fire in Northern California moved frighteningly close to their farm.“All the sudden, our neighbors come drivin’ up and they’re like, ‘Get out! We’re being evacuated,’” recalls Ellsworth. “The police are coming around, so that’s the notice.”Because of the time constraints to get out, they had to abandon two pigs and two feral dogs that couldn’t be corralled into trailers in time. The animals the family could take, they brought to the Rolling Hills Equestrian Center.Terry Skevington, with the center, says it’s one of the few places that allows owners to bring animals of all shapes and sizes. The animals can even sleep on site with them.“I had an old couple park here and stay with their cats, because the hotels wouldn’t let them stay with their cats,” says Skevington. “To some of ‘em, that’s all they got left.”He says the outpouring of donations of items--like fans for the animal stalls, halters and even feed--has been overwhelming.As for Ellsworth, she doesn’t know the status of her home or the animals she left behind, but she says she’s been able to keep it off her mind by staying busy. Fortunately, Ellsworth has insurance. She says in the worst-case scenario, she’d use the money as an opportunity to build a new barn for her animals.Representatives for the Humane Society that serves the region say, overall, they’ve seen about 1,000 animals displaced since the Carr fire broke out. About 150 of those animals have been housed at Rolling Hills. The center’s operators here say those animals and their owners can stay as long as they need.  2118

A San Diego Couple is breaking the internet after getting married at a Costco in Mission Valley Thursday. Margot Schein and Julian Parris said they made the decision to get married at Costco because, after meeting on a dating app, they decided to have their first date at the store. According to Schein, the couple decided to wed at Costco on their three-year anniversary. The wedding included a custom-made cake from the store, an archway and pallets to hold up bouquets of flowers. Staff at the store even took the time to set up chairs for the event as well as decorate a portion of the Costco with rose petals. “I feel like we have a whole new Costco family,” Margot said.  710
