"And also just like a fun take on this very challenging situation that we’re all in."For Lola, her husband, Tigre, and their two children, the pandemic came very close to home in March when the kids' Grandfather, Rich Pickett, tested positive for COVID-19."His case ended up becoming quite severe, putting him into the ICU," Lola said.Lola says while her father-in-law was in the hospital and the family was quarantined. They coped while at home by spending time together and playing games together. But the stress of the pandemic and its very personal impact was never far off."We noticed our kids were processing things by like adding hand washing stations to their Lego builds," said Lola. "We thought, that’s how we do things as humans. We play through it and figure out how we’re feeling."With that in mind, a project was launched.Dad, Tigre Pickett, says the family found some old poker cards, "Lola took a Sharpie and whiteout and started marking them up. We were like what if we had this card that did this?"Virus cards, spreaders, and antibodies. The headlines and stories of 2020 were becoming the cards of “It’s Contagious!” Like the café in Germany that required patrons to wear pool noodle hats for social distancing."We thought, well, there’s a card. "Like Zoom birthday parties," Tigre pipes in, as Lola continues, "And then things like antibodies become superheroes. They become a superpower card in the deck just like they do in real life."And the game itself becoming a part of real-life as the Picketts have invested in professional artwork and production in the hope that “It’s contagious,” catches on."We found that play is one of the fastest ways for processing," said Tigre. (KGTV) - The Escondido Union High School District is celebrating a grant renewal of over million to go towards helping students.The ASSETs grant comes from the federal government and helps funds after-school programs and other support services for students and parents.The district has received this funding for the past 10 years and schools have put it to good use.San Pasqual High School has created unique clubs like ukulele, welding, robotics, and mountain biking. The money also funds academic tutoring as well as programs like Drivers Ed.Everything created through the ASSETs grant money is free for students. "I can tell you it has literally transformed the experience for hundreds of students, hundreds," said San Pasqual High School Principal Martin Casas.Up until last week, next year's grant money wasn't a sure thing. Casas says the district worried the money would be cut from the federal budget.ASSETs grant schools like San Pasqual were trying to figure out which programs they'd have to cut if the funding didn't come through. Casas estimates they would have had to cut half of their programs.But now that the funding is secured, schools can look forward to creating even more programs.They'll receive 0,000 each year for the next five years.Some new programs in the works include building skateboards, music production, and mariachi.In addition to San Pasqual High, Orange Glen, Escondido and Valley High Schools will be getting ASSETs funding.The district says over 75 percent of its students qualify for free and reduced lunch, so these programs are vital.  1618

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Suspects reportedly forced employees onto the ground and into a vault during a robbery at a credit union in Escondido, according to the FBI. Police were called to the San Diego County Credit Union on the 1800 block of South Center City Parkway just before 10 a.m. after receiving reports of a robbery. After arriving on scene, police confirmed that a takeover-style robbery had occurred. According to the FBI, four men entered the credit union completely covered and armed with weapons. The suspects ordered employees to the ground and forced an employee to go into the vault to retrieve money. After grabbing the cash, the suspects fled the credit union in a late 80 or early 90s suburban, the FBI says. 741

ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A 47-year-old Escondido man was killed when he lost control of his pickup truck and slammed head-on into a car in Escondido, seriously injuring its driver, authorities said Friday.The crash happened shortly before 2:05 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Del Dios and Mount Israel roads, California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Smale said.A 47-year-old man behind the wheel of a 2006 Toyota Tundra pickup was heading eastbound at a high speed on Del Dios Road -- which was slick because of rain -- when he lost control of the pickup at a left-hand curve in the road and the truck began to spin, Smale said.The truck rotated once counterclockwise and crossed over into the opposite lane of traffic, where the front of the truck struck the front of a 2013 Subaru Crosstrek sedan with a 27-year-old woman from Encinitas behind the wheel, the officer said.The Toyota driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene, Smale said. The man's name was withheld pending family notification.The Subaru driver was taken to Palomar Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, he said.Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the crash. 1269
