SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seven people were hospitalized Tuesday after two multi-vehicle crashes on Interstate 5 in the Torrey Pines area.The crashes were reported on southbound I-5 near State route 56 just before 1 p.m. Two car crashes — one four-car crash and one three-car crash — occurred in the area, forcing a complete shut down of I-5 for about an hour, according to California Highway Patrol officer Jim Bettencourt.At one point, the CHP's incident log listed as many as a dozen vehicles possibly involved in the crash. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Sophie Felix may be petite, but there is nothing small about the way she approaches living and giving -- and it all started with her grandparents."Growing up, my Grandmother and my Grandpa Augie used to be foster parents so from a very young age I understood it's very important to give back to children in need," says Felix.Nine years ago, Sophie says she felt compelled to reach out to the Encinitas-based group, Passion 4 K.I.D.S. which stands for Kids In Desperate Situations. The group helps improve the lives of handicapped, neglected and underprivileged children.Through founders Linda and Charles Van Kessler, Sophie met Izaiah Wallis and his family. Izaiah has been unable to walk or talk since he was hit by a drunk driver at age one, 10 years ago.Sophie started out by planning special experiences for the family including securing sponsorships for trips to Disneyland and Seaworld as well as handicapped accessible gear such as a van --- and Sophie was just getting started. A mom herself, she became the chapter president of America's Children of Fallen Heroes. Off-roading adventure in a custom jeep is just one part of what the group does. A bigger part is providing the kids with a 10-year mentorship program so they can pursue anything and realize their dreams.Sophie says that is very important to her because she herself is living her American dream. In addition to her charity work, Sophie runs her own business, HBM Talent and Management, and she spreads her passion to every client she signs."That is part of our deal. They have to volunteer for at least 2 charity events per year," she says.Those clients, including former NASCAR driver Felix Giles, are happy to do it. If all that weren't enough, Sophie also makes sure a local brother and sister, whose mother can't afford Christmas presents, get presents every year.Sophie says her work with kids brings her, "indescribable joy, inspiration, happy tears, hope, faith" because she knows this is her purpose.Sophie's charity mentor Linda Van Kessler says Sophie has a heart of gold --- a heart that just gets bigger and bigger because of what she feels every time she helps a child. 2193

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Seven people were displaced following a house fire in Mountain View early Saturday morning, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.The fire was reported just after 3:30 a.m. on Teak Street near Ocean View Boulevard. Crews quickly responded and were able to get the blaze under control. The home that burned sits on a lot with a second home in front, and the front house was not damaged.Family and residents of the front house said they believe the fire started from a washer/dryer unit. They also said that they had to pull bars off of a window to help people escape, with those outside pulling and those inside kicking on the bars. Four people were were hurt after climbing through the broken window.Crews say a total of seven people were displaced and the American Red Cross was called in to help, but family on scene said everyone is okay. They said the hardest part is realizing they lost everything, including Christmas presents that the two little girls who lived in the burned home had just unwrapped the day before.The family started a GoFundMe to raise money following the fire. 1112

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State says 120 more confirmed and probably coronavirus cases have been reported in the school's off- and on-campus student population.The new cases bring SDSU's total student COVID-19 count to 184 cases since the fall semester began last week.The school says county health officials it investigating "multiple clusters" of coronavirus cases among students in the university community, including a previously announced outbreak on Wednesday.RELATED: San Diego State moves all classes online for 4 weeks as student cases riseOfficials say among the cases, 14 groups have been identified within different locations. Some of these groups may eventually be linked to outbreaks.SDSU says none of the cases under investigation are related to on-campus educational activities, including classes or labs. No known cases have been reported in school faculty, staff, visitors, or vendors.The school advised that all undergraduates students who have attended gatherings or think they may have been exposed should get tested and isolate themselves. The county estimated that each SDSU student case averages 4.5 contacts each.“SDSU undergrads need to stay home within their living units this weekend and help us stop the spread within your campus community,” said Wilma Wooten, County public health officer. “If you have been to parties and social events, you need to get tested, now. And isolate until you get results.”Students can call 2-1-1 or their medical providers and stay home if they become ill. They may also contact Student Health Services at 619-594-4325 (Monday through Friday) or the Nurse Call Line at 858-225-3105 (after hours and during weekends and holidays).
