Carter says she has a lot of friends from mentoring and participating in women's empowerment groups."I wanted them all to experience the love that they've seen that I've been praying for and wanting. I wanted them to witness it first hand," Carter says.When she told her now-husband, Gary Carter, of her plans, he didn't think she was serious at first, she says."He thought I was joking but then he was like, 'If anybody can do it.' He knows how I am and how many women are around me," Carter said.Carter says her husband's next concern was whether he could match that many women with men. "You don't expect me to have that many groomsmen," she recalls him saying.The bridesmaids were even more surprised than her husband because Carter didn't tell them that there would be 34 women in her wedding.She says she broke them up into a few different group chats to discuss details and told them just to get neutral beach dresses, and bring some bathing suits and khakis.The bride says the surprise went off without a hitch. "When they saw everybody they were like, 'Oh my God, Casme. This is so awesome!'"She was just happy that everyone was able to make it to her wedding. "Their time and their presence was a gift to me, just being there."In addition to holding a massive wedding, Carter says the couple decided to get married only three months after getting engaged.She says she always dreamed of a beach wedding and after being a wedding singer in Destin for at least 50 weddings she knew it was the place she wanted to get married.Carter also had a Pinterest board for her wedding that she had worked on for several years before even meeting her husband so she finalized it printed it out, and went to work to pull the massive event together in a short time.Overall, Carter says the day was perfect and she wouldn't have changed a thing."Everything about this wedding was different," Carter says. A confluence of factors led to 52 people being shot, 10 fatally, in Chicago over the weekend, including gangs, drugs, an ineffective justice system and a season of hot weather that often ushers bloodshed into the city, the police chief said Monday."Despite the investments and progress in safety, weekends like this remind us all of the challenges that we face and that they are complex and profound," Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson told reporters.In addition to seeing gangbangers settle conflicts with firearms, officers in the northern part of the city witnessed "tensions related to the open-air drug market that's occurring on the West Side," Deputy Chief Al Nagode said.After some of the gang violence on the West and South sides spilled into other neighborhoods, Johnson said, police increased patrols to stave off chances for retaliation. Police seized 92 guns, doubled the confiscations for a normal weekend, and made 18 gun-related arrests, the chief said.Johnson calls out courtsYet despite the Chicago Police Department's efforts -- which includes planting department brass among patrol teams -- Johnson said his officers need help from the courts and the community, especially during the summer months in which the city typically turns so violent.That Johnson's commanders were nearby when some of the shootings occurred -- one district commander was half a block away when someone was shot on Central Park Avenue -- demonstrates how brazen the gunmen are, the superintendent said."We cannot -- can't -- do this without the support of the community or a unified criminal justice system that keeps gun offenders out of our neighborhoods," Johnson said. "We know who a lot of these people are, and how do we know that? Because we keep arresting them ... so until we hold violent offenders accountable the way that they should be, we're going to continue to see this."He said half of the people arrested on gun charges are back on the street within a week. Some people see the landmark decision out of Oklahoma as a turning point in the nation's fight against opioids.A judge is ordering drug maker Johnson & Johnson to pay over half a billion dollars for its role in the crisis.One emergency room doctor hopes their unique program combined with court battles against drug companies might finally help fix the crisis.“Nationally this is a huge epidemic,” says Dr. Ashley Curry, an emergency psychiatrist with Denver Health.It's estimated that over 130 people die every single day from an opioid overdose. And even for those who recognize they may have a problem, it can take months to get help and a prescription for the medication they might need to help them.Curry is part of the team of doctors at Denver Health's "Treatment on Demand" program.“We recognized that there was really a gap in when people were ready to start treatment and how quickly they could access that treatment, so we were trying to fill that gap,” Curry says.Their solution? Same day treatment.“Day or night, 24/7, our emergency room is open and people can come in and start on medication-assisted treatment,” Curry says.About 300 patients so far have used the hospital's emergency department for treatment, and about 70 percent have continued with clinic follow-ups.Curry hopes that Monday’s verdict against drug maker Johnson & Johnson means the tide might finally be turning.“I think that verdict really helps represent like the collective consciousness about how problematic opioid use has become for our country,” Curry says. “We are recognizing this is a major problem and it's a public health crisis. 1645
