More companies are trying four-day work weeks. Some are doing it to avoid laying people off during the pandemic. Others say it creates a better work-life-balance with employees at home.Elephant Ventures is a software company that started testing employees working four 10-hour days. It's a move to help employee morale and parents dealing with childcare and remote learning.“I think you still have the age-old conversation of if it's 40 hours compressed into four days, you still have how much productivity are you actually getting in a 10-hour workday,” said Barb Holland, an Human Resources Knowledge Advisor with SHRM.Productivity has gone up in other countries, like at Microsoft in Japan, when they tried a four-day work-week last year.Zip Recruiter has seen an increase in job postings that mention four-day work weeks this year.“If you're not wanting to lose your good workers or you're wanting to make sure they're not looking elsewhere for those places that are hiring, you have to be thinking about, ‘how do I retain my good staff,’” said Holland. “I don't want to lose them and flexibility I think is going to be a key piece of retaining staff in the future.”That HR expert says flexibility could be key to attracting new workers in the future.Elephant Ventures plans to test its new work week this month. If it's successful, it could look at reducing the workday by an hour. 1393

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - When it comes to time off, managers can ask questions to an extent in order to confirm an employee is following CDC and local health mandates.Businesses are legally allowed to ask employees about potential exposure to COVID-19 if it helps keep the workplace or customers safe. Attorney Rebecca Demaree said if an employer does not treat every employee the same way, they may find themselves in hot water."Should you ask 'well, if you're going to that protest activity, we're going to make your self isolate for 14 days because we know there are going to be a large number of individuals,' and then you take a similarly situated employee who says 'at Christmas I'll be with 20 of my relatives,' and you don't treat them the same way, the question could be are you doing that because you're trying to stifle a protest or a First Amendment activity?" said Rebecca Demaree.Demaree counsels companies on labor and employment law. She said health screenings when employees return to work after time off make sense in most high-contact industries."That's going to be important for the employers to keep customers and fellow employees safe," Demaree said. Demaree advises a good questionnaire doesn't include questions that can make an employee feel singled out."They're not questions about 'who were you with?' 'Where were you?' What were you doing exactly?' But they are more designed to lead to those questions if more information is warranted," she said.Additionally, friends and families should not compare their return to work processes because different industries are doing it differently. New questions are also likely to be asked in 2021 when vaccines are available. Some employers may be able to require workers to get the shots. This story was first reported by Hannah McDonald at WTVF in Nashville, Tennessee. 1841

Nate Silver announced Tuesday that his analytics-based politics and sports site, FiveThirtyEight, will now be operated by ABC News. The site was previously owned and operated ESPN. Both ESPN and ABC News are owned by the same parent company, Disney.Silver, the site's editor-in-chief, also tweeted that the site would continue to cover sports and that ESPN would still showcase the site's sports content."We're super excited to work with @ABC and combine our strengths with theirs as we tackle the 2018 and 2020 elections and other news stories," Silver tweeted.ABC News also confirmed the news on Tuesday afternoon.FiveThirtyEight's move comes at a turbulent time for ESPN. The company recently hired a new president, Jimmy Pitaro, after former president John Skipper resigned following a cocaine extortion attempt. ESPN has also lost millions of cable subscriptions as consumers have begun favoring streaming services over traditional cable packages.FiveThirtyEight was founded in 2008 with the goal of using analytical data to cover sports and politics. The site has won praise for further analytics in sports coverage and correctly predicting the outcomes of all 50 states during the 2012 presidential election. However, the site failed to correctly predict the outcome of the 2016 election, and gave then-candidate Donald Trump just a 29 percent chance to win the electoral college on the morning of Election Day. 1440
