LAS VEGAS, the United States, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Top-quality light manufactured products and consumer goods have been on display at the China Brand Show 2010 held in Las Vegas since Sunday, as part of China's bid to further enhance the profiles of Chinese-made products and promote closer Sino-U.S. trade and economic relations.Co-hosted by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), and the Zhejiang and Fujian Provincial Governments, the exhibition is being held from Aug. 8 through Aug. 11. It has been staged in the United States for seven years in a row.A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Monday morning. Ranking officials from MOFCOM, Zhejiang and Fujian provinces and Nevada and Las Vegas participated in the event. Around 200 people witnessed the occasion."The China Brand Show has become an important window for U.S. enterprises and consumers to understand 'Made in China,' Chinese brands and Chinese enterprises," said Wen Zhongliang, Deputy Chief of the Department of Foreign Trade under the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. "Also, the show is more and more attractive to Chinese enterprises."The show occupies a total exhibition area of 4,500 sq m and hosts 229 carefully selected top-brand Chinese firms from 18 provinces and cities in China, including Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangsu, and Guangdong. The exhibits, including light manufactured products, consumer and household electronic goods, feature high-technology and ingenious design and represent a new dimension of China's latest economic achievements. This year's show has set records in scale, exhibitors and exhibit varieties. The show has served as a platform where corporate image can be built, products showcased and positive conditions for cultivating well-known Chinese brands created, the organizers said. For the past four years in a row, the show has been hosted in Las Vegas, one of the ideal venues for exhibitors around the world. China and Nevada have "a great future together as trade partners and friends," Lorraine Hunt-Bono, Commissioner and former Lt. Governor of Nevada, said. The appearance of participating enterprises and products in the show will not only facilitate American consumers to buy Chinese goods, but also provide cooperation opportunities for firms of the two countries."The increasingly close Sino-U.S. economic and trade cooperation not only benefits the peoples of both countries, but also provides new impetus for the development of bilateral relations, and contributes to the recovery of the global economy to a steady growth," Wen, the MOFCOM official, added.

CHANGCHUN, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Soldiers and emergency workers are still struggling to retrieve the thousands of chemical-filled barrels that were swept into a major river by rain-triggered floods in northeast China's Jilin Province. Some 3,000 chemical-filled barrels and 4,000 empty ones fell into the Songhua River Wednesday morning after floods swamped the warehouses of two chemical companies in Jilin City, Jilin Province. The accident happened on the same day when Zhou Shengxian, minister of environmental protection, called for more steps to tackle pollution in the Songhua River while addressing a meeting on water pollution control.Though the river is facing the risk of being contaminated by chemicals, experts have concluded that the root cause of the accident is the irrational layout of chemical factories.MORE THAN 5,000 BARRELS RECOVERED AMID DIFFICULTIESMore than 5,000 of the 7,000 chemical barrels had been recovered as of 7 p.m. Saturday, local authorities said.Additionally, more than 10,000 soldiers and civilians have been stationed at 16 points in Jilin's Songyuan City, where the Songhua River enters Zhaoyuan City in the Heilongjiang Province; their task is to try and recover all the remaining barrels within the territory of Jilin Province. However, as the Fengman Dam, located on the upper reaches of the Songhua River, opened its floodgates Friday afternoon to discharge flood waters, the unrecovered barrels are now flowing faster down the river and it has become more difficult to retrieve them, said Professor Liu Guoliang, a chemist who is leading Heilongjiang's retrieval team.Experts are concerned that the chemical-filled barrels might explode if they slam into a dam at high speed, although the dams may be helpful in intercepting the barrels."The blue barrels are like time bombs. We don't know when any of them might explode," said Chen Yanpeng, a resident of Jilin's Yushu City, who has participated in the salvage work."In addition to retrieving the barrels, people should also consider why this has happened," Cheng said.

BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Floods in China have killed 377 people this year, as of Friday, and left 142 others missing, the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said Friday in a statement on its website.Further, flooding in 2010 has affected 64.57 million people in China's 22 provinces, municipalities and regions, as well as inundating about 4 million hectares of crops, the statement said.A total of 4.35 million people have been evacuated due to the flood waters, which destroyed 368,000 homes and caused economic losses reaching 75.6 billion yuan (11.13 billion U.S. dollars), according to the statement.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited flood-hit Fuzhou City in the eastern province of Jiangxi Thursday to inspect the fight against flooding and review disaster relief efforts. Wen also asked local officials to send more relief funds and materials to ensure that basic living needs of flood victims are met.

HONG KONG, June 21 (Xinhua) -- After working in Beijing for 10 months, U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman said here Monday that trust was very important and was the fuel that powered the U. S.-China relations."Sometimes the tank is full, (and) sometimes it draws down. When it draws down like what happened early this year, the relations become sort of rocky," said Huntsman, who was invited by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce as one of its 150th anniversary speakers.Huntsman, who became U.S. Ambassador to China in August last year, gave five observations on the U.S.-China relations.Firstly, the mandarin-speaking U.S. diplomat said there were a lot less dramas in the U.S.-China relations than many people might imagine despite the occasional alarmist headlines."If you view the U.S.-China relations with a distance, you get the sense that the wheel is coming off the bus. But when in the middle of the relations, you would get less drama," he said."There is more respect ... (and) the ability to communicate on the very very sensitive issues. I don't have a panic button, no restart button. The relations have ups and downs, but overall relations are strong, stable and resilient," Huntsman said.Secondly, he said there are areas of difference but there are many more areas of convergence and what unites us is a lot more important than what divides the U.S. and China."Our success is increasingly tied to identifying our shared interests and to working towards practical solutions," said the 50- year-old diplomat.Thirdly, Huntsman said the two nations were not seeking to " impose our world views on one another" or "to remake one another."The U.S. and China would seek to understand each other better, to continue dialogues and to improve future prospects, he said.Fourthly, Huntsman said while hot political issues often grab public attention, the foundation of the U.S.-China relations was largely commerce and trade.Back in 1974 and 1975, two-way annual trade between the U.S. and China was somewhere between 500 million U.S. dollars to 1 billion U.S. dollars, but this year the U.S.-China trade would reach 400 billion U.S. dollars, making it the world's largest commercial relations, according to Huntsman.Even in the sensitive areas of imbalance, it began to narrow, he said. In 2000, China was the 11th largest export market of the U.S. while it was the third largest now.Fifth, Huntsman said long-term U.S.-China relationship should be based on investment in the next generation and real trust would be earned by people-to-people interactions.Huntsman reminded people of being realistic on the expectations over the U.S.-China relations. "It would never be a 100-percent paradise, nor a cold-war staredown. It would probably be something in between," he added.Asked to comment on China's move to allow more flexibility in its yuan exchange rate, Huntsman responded carefully."I think it's a genuine attempt by China to address its exchange rate mechanism by providing greater flexibility. I know they have given great thoughts and consideration on going forward, knowing that any economic transition that results in stronger consumption, will at some point have to deal with the currency issue," he said.
