SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the election nears, millions of people will be glued to smartphones and computer screens, scrolling through social media for instant information.But platforms like Twitter and Facebook may not be the best sources for information."The way the algorithms work, they promote stuff that gets a lot of reaction or a lot of engagement," says University of San Diego Assistant Professor Colin Campbell. "The systems are designed to try to show you stuff that they think is going to actually make you excited or make you react in some way. And as a result, that tends to be the more polarizing stuff."But both sites have taken steps in 2020 to safeguard against misinformation.In a lengthy blog post about their election protocols, Twitter called their role in the election "critical," saying that people should "use Twitter respectfully and to recognize our collective responsibility to the electorate to guarantee a safe, fair, and legitimate democratic process."They adjusted their "Civic Integrity Policy" so that only verified and official accounts can tweet about election results. They're also imposing stricter punishments for Tweets calling for election interference or violence.Twitter also made changes to the way people interact with links posted on their platform.They've added warnings to misleading tweets and direct people to more credible information if they engage with a misleading post.They also now ask people to click on a link before Retweeting it and encourage "Quote Tweeting," where people can comment on what they're sharing instead of just reposting the original Tweet.Twitter also changed the format of its Trending section, adding context to topics and hashtags.Facebook, meanwhile, put a lot of effort into helping people vote. Their Voter Information Center helped 4.4 million people register to vote in 2020.They also banned all ads related to the election, politics, or other social issues during the entire month leading up to the election.To help keep misinformation from spreading, Facebook says they removed 120,000 posts from March through September for violating their Voter Interference Policies. They also issued 150 million warnings for content that was flagged as misleading by independent fact-checkers.Campbell says both platforms are a lot more reliable now than they were in 2016, but could still have done more. He believes it's because they didn't want to face criticism over censorship."From a pragmatic perspective, they probably don't want to get involved in the challenges of trying to go through and censor or decide what kind of stuff they want to have on the site," says Campbell.Even with all the changes, he says users still need to scroll with skepticism and filter the content they chose to engage with."I think it's very important that we're all vigilant," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As Seaworld San Diego reopens its doors this weekend, an East County grandmother and passholder says she and her grandson won't be making a visit.Visiting SeaWorld is one of Rose Becker's favorite things to do with her 4-year-old grandson Vincent."He just loves walking around and looking at the dolphins, orcas, and sea lions," said Becker.So when SeaWorld announced they would be reopening, she got excited.RELATED: Several San Diego County businesses to reopen indoors with limits under new guidance"I was planning on taking him Sunday. Was so excited to hear SeaWorld was back open. My grandson was so excited ... and then my excitement, down to frustration," said Becker.She was frustrated because of the cost. The park's attractions will be limited to outdoor animal exhibits and shows. A ticket will include food, drink, and merchandise. Passholders like Becker get a complimentary ticket but must pay for the lanyard for the food and beverages. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As school districts across San Diego County work to piece together how the next school year will look like and how they’ll pay for it, others are joining forces to try and get more resources.Two of the largest school districts in California, Los Angeles Unified and San Diego Unified, announced they plan to pool their purchasing power to secure PPE and other equipment that’s needed to safely reopen.They join the other districts in the struggle to find out how to fund all the changes they’ll have to make to keep up with the state’s guidelines in dealing with COVID-19.Last week, the state’s superintendent of schools released a handbook that looks at the options of possibly splitting up students based on grade level, having them report to school on two designated days, and doing distance learning on the other days. They’re also looking to stagger start and dismissal times.While some parents believe having students return to school is easier than virtual learning, San Diego Education Association President Kisha Borden said, “I also think it will create a need for more teachers, we may have to utilize more of our visiting teachers.”The state superintendent is also recommending face coverings before entering campus. They will not need to wear it while eating.In a statement, LA Unified Superintendent Austin Beutner and SD Unified Superintendent Cindy Marten said:“Schools across the state are working around the clock to plan for reopening because students must have the chance to continue their education. Unfortunately, last week the state published 55 pages of new guidelines on districts with no funding attached. Unless the funding needs are addressed comprehensively in the state budget, there is no way schools will be able to follow all the new recommended guidelines required for a safe, responsible reopening in the fall. It is inappropriate to pronounce public guidelines as recommended best practices and then leave districts without the necessary funding to implement them.
