Just spotted the huge fire at a plant in Lake Charles. Residents in nearby areas and north of the plant are being asked to shelter indoors, close their windows and turn off their AC. It is unclear if this fire is related to Hurricane #Laura. pic.twitter.com/HLjx2VSjQY— Maya Rodriguez (@MayaJRodriguez) August 27, 2020 326
Kim Kardashian West, Demi Lovato, Kerry Washington, Leonardo DiCaprio, Katy Perry and others will be staying off Facebook and Instagram Wednesday, September 16 as part of a coordinated week-long campaign about misinformation on the platform.“I love that I can connect directly with you through Instagram and Facebook, but I can’t sit by and stay silent while these platforms continue to allow the spreading of hate, propaganda and misinformation - created by groups to sow division and split America apart – only to take steps after people are killed,” Kardashian posted to Facebook Tuesday afternoon, with an orange and white image reading “stop hate" and the #StopHateforProfit tag. 692
KFC is running out of ... chicken? The fast food chain has been forced to temporarily close hundreds of restaurants in the United Kingdom after a logistics snafu stopped chicken deliveries.About 800 of the company's roughly 900 locations in Britain were closed as of midday on Monday. Some had opened for business by the afternoon, according to the company's website.KFC, which is owned by Taco Bell and Pizza Hut parent Yum!, said the chicken shortage had been caused by a "couple of teething problems" with its new delivery partner, DHL."We won't compromise on quality, so no deliveries has meant some of our restaurants are closed, and others are operating a limited menu, or shortened hours," KFC said in a statement.DHL acknowledged that a number of its deliveries had been "incomplete or delayed" because of "operational issues." The logistics company said it was working with KFC to solve the problem.KFC switched suppliers from Bidvest Logistics to DHL last Wednesday. Bidvest said that from its perspective, the transition had been "seamless."Franchisees operate 95% of KFC's outlets in the U.K. The company said in a statement that it would pay its staff as normal, and it was encouraging franchisees to do the same.KFC said it is too early to say how long it would take to restore normal service.Related: KFC promises to ditch antibiotic-laden chickenBritain is KFC's largest market in Europe, and one of its top five globally.KFC fans were not happy -- and many used social media to complain and express amusement over a chicken restaurant running out of its signature product.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. Just days ahead of the presidential election, the U.S. set a new daily record for new COVID-19 infections with 99,000 on Friday, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins University. The staggering number of infections broke the previous record of more than 88,000, which had been set on Thursday. Prior to that, on Oct. 23, the U.S. recorded nearly 84.000, which broke a daily record which had stood since July.Overall, the U.S. has recorded more than 9 million COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began. More than 230,000 Americans have died of the virus. Both of those figures are the most recorded in any country throughout the world. In addition to rising case numbers, the U.S. is also experiencing a spike in hospitalizations linked to the virus. COVID-19 daily deaths have held fairly steady in recent months since a slight uptick in the summer. The surge in cases comes as Americans head to the polls for the 2020 election — and Pew Research polling shows that more than half of Americans believe the pandemic is a "very important" issue that will affect their vote. However, the importance of COVID-19 seems to break down among party lines — 82% of Democrats consider the pandemic to be an important issue, while just 24% of Republicans believe it to be important.Despite rising case numbers and hospitalization rates, President Donald Trump has insisted that the U.S. is "rounding the corner" on the pandemic and has touted his administration's work in the pre-production of the vaccine. He's also hinted that he intends to fire Dr. Anthony Fauci — his administration's top infectious disease expert and one of the most respected members of the White House coronavirus task force.Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has repeated that he will let science drive his decisions when it comes to the pandemic and has said he supports a mask mandate on federal property.Fauci and other top health officials believe the U.S. is in a perilous position as cases spike ahead of winter months. Last week, Fauci said he felt the country will experience "a whole lot of pain" this winter if things don't change in the coming weeks. 2142
LA JOLLA, CA (KGTV)-- The COVID-19 pandemic has had a big impact on the arts, with live music and theater on hold. But the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla is moving forward with their 20-21 performance season. From Grammy nominated singers to comedians they have found a way to kickoff their year"Our Arts and Ideas season brings performers and intellectuals from a diversity of backgrounds, talents, and passions to share the arts with everyone, " says JCC board member Laurie Greenberg. "Which is incredibly important at this time." And for the first time, the JCC's cultural season will be all virtual."I think it's incredibly important because the arts broaden horizons, they give us new experiences. They give a little bit of an escape which we all need right now. It's really important that we can offer this arts and ideas season, as well as our other arts, and cultural programming to the community right now."And one of the great things about the new season, is it's being offered for free."What we're hoping to do is have this season entirely under written so that we're able to offer the entire season without charge. While at the same time. still be able to bring high quality performers, who will give us new experiences and new connections .It's really through the generosity of our donors."The Arts and Ideas season runs from October through June. Also, the JCC youth theater will perform outside, and stream virtually. 1447
