Millions in Northern California saw apocalyptic orange skies this week as massive wildfires burn through the region.Phoenix native Kristen Marin and her family live 2.5 hours north of San Francisco in Mendocino County, while the Oak Fire is burning near them."It feels a little like doomsday," said Marin. "It felt like it was night all during the day time. The air quality was awful. The crickets were chirping. The floodlights were on, thinking it was dark. Everything is covered in ash. It smells like smoke. You'd think that you were in a fireplace," said Marin. On Thursday, the Oak Fire was 25% contained.Luckily, Marin's family hasn't been told to evacuate."You're just on notice, all the time you're wondering if it's going to be your community or your address that pops up on the alert," said Marin.According to the California Department of Fires and Forestry Protection, there are about 14,000 firefighters on the line of 29 major wildfires burning across the state.Tait Mitton is leading a team of four from the Arizona Fire and Medical Authority. They're on a two-week mission northeast of Fresno working night shifts on the Creek Fire in the Sierra National Forest."Our responsibility is life safety. Making sure everyone is evacuated from the area, also protecting structures, houses, cabins," said Mitton. The Creek Fire has burned more than 175,000 acres and destroyed hundreds of homes and is 0% contained."Right now California---the firefighters over here --they're working really hard, they're overtaxed right now, we're going to do everything we can to help and help the community," said Mitton.Mitton said compared to desert fires, the vegetation in the Sierra National Forest makes it harder to contain the flames since there are more trees than burn hotter for longer. The father of New England Patriots running back James White was killed in a crash Sunday afternoon in South Florida, hours before his team's appearance on NBC's "Sunday Night Football."Broward Sheriff's Office Sgt. Donald Prichard said Miami-Dade police Capt. Tyrone White was killed in a two-vehicle crash about 1 p.m. along Griffin Road in Cooper City. Prichard said one vehicle overturned and the other caught fire. Two of the three victims were flown to a hospital for medical treatment, but the elder White was pronounced dead at the scene. I’m extremely saddened after learning of the passing of MDPD Captain Tyrone White earlier today as a result of an off-duty traffic crash in Broward County. I offered his family my deepest condolences on behalf of his MDPD family. May he rest in eternal peace. 1/2....— Alfredo "Freddy" Ramirez III (@MDPD_Director) September 20, 2020 He was the father of James White, a fourth-round draft pick of the Patriots in 2014. A police body-camera recording released Wednesday shed more light on the house party that earned six Miami University students citations for violating COVID-19 health orders over Labor Day weekend. There were 20 people inside the house on Saturday afternoon, when an Oxford police officer arrived to break up the party. In the recording, he approaches a group of young men sitting outside and asks to speak to someone who lives in the house. One steps forward and admits he knows he’s broken the state’s rule against gatherings larger than 10 people. The officer takes his ID, runs it through a police database and discovers that its owner had tested positive for COVID-19.This exchange follows:Officer: I’ve never seen this before. There’s an input on the computer that you tested positive for COVID.Student: Yes.Officer: When was this?Student: This was a week ago.Officer: Are you supposed to be quarantining?Student: Yeah. That’s why I’m at my house.Officer: So you have other people here, and you’re positive for COVID?Student: I mean…Officer: You see the problem? How many other people have COVID?Student: They all do.Officer: Everybody has it?Student: Well, and them — [gestures to house across the street]Officer: And everybody over here has it?Student: Well, I think two.Officer: That’s what we’re trying to prevent, man.Student: I know.Officer: We’re trying to keep this town open.Student: I know. That’s why I’m staying home.Six men who lived in the house were cited, a civil penalty that carries no criminal charge but comes with a 0 fine.Miami University has been the single largest contributor to Butler County’s case count since mid-August, according to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. He and Miami University president Gregory Crawford attribute the school’s cases — 1,084 of them, most diagnosed in the last two weeks — to off-campus house parties exactly like the one recorded over the weekend.Although Miami delayed the start of in-person instruction, Crawford said upperclassmen moved back into town in August and began partying when they got there."Those early weekends in August, we saw an uptick in parties and gatherings,” he said. “I think that’s what is responsible for the surge today.”It’s a surge that is, for now, unique among schools in the Cincinnati area. The University of Cincinnati, a similarly-sized campus, recorded only 147 cases in the last two weeks.Miami has instituted a mandatory testing policy for students, and Crawford on Wednesday announced the school would resume in-person classes starting Sept. 21.A university spokesperson did not respond to questions about whether the students involved in Saturday’s party would be suspended. He's long toyed with doing it, but rapper and fashion designer Kanye West appears to be making good on his promise to run for president. The multiplatinum Chicago native announced on Twitter Saturday that he's making good on what he said he'd do at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards and running for president in 2020. "We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future," West told his 29.3 million Twitter followers. "I am running for president of the United States!" We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States ????! #2020VISION— ye (@kanyewest) July 5, 2020 West has created controversy his entire career but only recently become somewhat of a political figure, previously supporting President Donald Trump. The two have gone from meeting with Trump in Manhattan during his transition to the presidency to complimentary tweets to working on prison reform alongside his wife, Kim Kardashian West. The rapper made no further details of his run, or whether this signified a turn against the president. There was no indication that this was a prank or a joke, though West has given no official statement on the potential run. This article was written by Stephen M. Lepore for WPIX. 1371
