Summertime is almost over, and that means back to the grind. For parents, it can be stressful to get kids back on a good sleep routine.Lauren Preusz is a mother of three young children and knows vacations, cookouts and late bedtimes must come to an end. But how?"Bedtime definitely got pushed back a lot later than normal, and then they were sleeping in later," Preusz said. "But with school coming up they can't be staying up to 9 p.m. or 9:30 p.m., then waking up and getting to school by 8 a.m."She says she's worried about what later bedtimes could do to her children once school begins."I didn't want to worry about behavioral issues at school, or them being too tired to actually be present, participate, and learn," Preusz said.Sleep experts and doctors alike recommending rolling bedtime back about 15- to 20-minute a day until school starts to make sure kids are ready for a new sleep pattern."This is now the time you should be moving the bedtime up and that bedtime routine close to bedtime, so they associate the routine with the actual going to bed," said Dr. Celina Moore, a pediatrician.Preusz hired the Cradle Coach, a team of sleep consultants, to help get her family back in the routine of early bedtimes. The Cradle Coach team says kids need between 10 and 12 hours of sleep per night."Routine is huge," Cradle Coach sleep consultant Janelle Aubert said. "Start bedtime routine about 45 minutes before bed and making sure your child has plenty of time to unwind."In addition, Aubert recommends looking at children's diets and cutting back on sugar. She also says first-time students can experience some sleep regression from the stress of a new routine."Take time to prepare," said Aubert. "Talk about it. Show them pictures and visuals and be sure to increase quality and one-on-one time with them.""Start talking about exactly what's going to happen. Mommy is going to take you in the morning. Scientists have long warned of the effects of global warming and the possibility of more intense wildfires that burn for longer periods of time. Now, a new team of researchers is hoping to get a better understanding of how the smoke travels and what the tiniest particles could be doing to our lungs. "There's many things we’re still struggling to understand about smoke,” explains Joshua Schwarz, a physicist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The group of researchers includes meteorologists and weather modelers, in addition to scientists. “All together, we are deciding which fires to target," Schwarz says. Amber Soja, with NASA, describes herself as the “fire person” of the group. Every day for the next couple of weeks, this group will create a flight plan, opening the door for another group of scientists inside this flying laboratory. “We've got tremendous range, and we're carrying a tremendous payload of information,” Soja says.This lab was once an Italian passenger airliner. It flies straight into the smoke of fires. "We'll have to look at what's the altitude of the smoke we want to be in, which direction is the smoke going, how far can we track that smoke," Schwarz says.Intake tubes on the outside of the lab bring in smoke particles that will be studied. Researchers are interested in learning how the smoke travels and what it does to our bodies when it’s inhaled. Pete Lahm, with the U.S. Forest Service, says studying the smoke is important because it impacts both public health and safety. “This info will help us make in the long run [make] better decisions on when we ignite fire and how we consider smoke impacts, and that's absolutely critical to our mission,” Lahm says. Those in their 30s need to focus on asking for a raise and building their salaries.Curtis says they need to be bold.People in their 40s have a tougher time if they have growing children. It’s harder to save."The key around your 40s is making sure that you don't give up the savings your started in your 20s,” she said.Keep building the money in your 50s and consider not fully retiring until your 70s.
