People of color and allies are participating in Blackout Day on Tuesday to support the African American community and Black-owned businesses.Blackout Day is an economic protest organized by The Blackout Coalition. Participants are asked not to spend any money on July 7, but if they must spend, they’re asked to do so only at Black-owned businesses. The coalition says the movement is exclusively targeted at empowering and uplifting Black people, but it welcomes all people of color to stand in solidarity with them. The organization says it also welcomes allies who choose to participate in the protest, but leaders say they “make absolutely no apology for the fact this movement is FOR US & BY US.”The goal of the protest is to highlight the buying power of African Americans. In 2018, Black buying power reached .3 trillion, up from 0 billion in 1990, according to Nielsen.“This is only the beginning of a lifelong pursuit of economic empowerment as a reality for ALL BLACK PEOPLE,” the organization wrote on its “about” page. “United, we are an unstoppable force. We are a nation of people within this nation that at any time can demand our liberation by withholding our dollars. If we can do it for a day, we can do it for a week, a month, a quarter, a year…and one day we will look up and it will be a way of life.”The protest comes in the wake of nationwide protests against police brutality following the death of multiple Black people, most notably George Floyd in Minneapolis on Memorial Day. Demonstrators are calling for racial justice and to close America’s racial wealth gap.The nation’s largest Black-owned bank, OneUnited Bank, said in a statement that it supports Blackout Day 2020."As the largest Black owned bank in America, we're compelled to play a leadership role to galvanize our community and allies in support of #BlackOutDay2020 and to fight for social justice," said Kevin Cohee, CEO of OneUnited Bank. "We need to use our power – both our spending power, our vote and our voice – to demand criminal justice reform and to address income inequality." 2093

PHOENIX — Arizona news station ABC15 has learned that an Arizona lawyer assisting the Trump campaign is looking at ballots filled out with Sharpies as one focus for what could become an attempt to flip Arizona to President Donald Trump. The attorney says many Trump supporters who used Sharpies are worried that their votes are being thrown out as the counting process continues around Arizona. There is no evidence at this point that Sharpie votes have been disqualified. The attorney, who has deep roots in the state’s election processing system, told ABC15’s Nicole Valdes that the Sharpie ballots are on the radar of those deciding what, if anything, they may do in court. The information was given on condition that the source would not be named. ABC15 has verified that the attorney has direct knowledge of the developing legal strategy for President Donald Trump in Arizona. The information comes as ABC News reported Wednesday that Governor Doug Ducey told the White House he “sees something” that could get Arizona and its 11 electoral votes in the win column for the President. At this point, there’s no sign of any movement toward actual litigation around the Sharpie ballots or any other vote casting or vote counting activity.Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs is on the record defending the Sharpie ballots, though a ballpoint pen is the recommended method for filling out a ballot. ABC15 checked in with attorneys representing Democratic candidates, who say they have not heard of any potential litigation yet.Sharpie is the trademarked name of a permanent felt tip marker. Its use on Arizona ballots became a prominent conversation point on Twitter overnight. The Maricopa County Elections Department says even if marks made by Sharpies or any felt tip marker on a ballot bleed through the paper, it won't impact their tabulator's ability to read contests. Maricopa County's tabulators are designed only to read the ovals for each contest, according to county election officials. Even if ink bleeds through to the other side of the ballot, the ink won't mark another contest, since ballots are printed in an "off-set" pattern, meaning contests on the back side of the ballot don't align with those on the front.Republicans and the Trump campaign were shocked when Fox News declared Democrat Joe Biden the Arizona winner at about 9:30 p.m. on Election Day. Ducey Tweeted his displeasure as Fox News election analysts defended the decision.Arizona remains too close to call in most media projections, but AP called Biden as the winner early Wednesday.ABC15 data analyst Garrett Archer says as votes are counted, the President will likely pick up more votes than Biden and the Democrat’s lead will shrink. It’s unclear if the President can overtake Biden, who is riding the wave of record early voting that favors Democrats.Tabulation continues throughout the state, focusing on ballots that were dropped off on Election Day and those that arrived by mail and were not part of the early counting process that began October 20. 3045

Police in Illinois have deemed a local man a hero after he raced to rescue a man from a burning vehicle on Sunday evening.According to the Aurora Police Department's Facebook page, a 57-year-old man rushed to the rescue after a single-car crash just after midnight on Saturday. Dash cam video from the crash shows the man dragging the driver away from the car by his legs as flames shoot out of the driver's side window.According to Aurora police, it was 58-year-old Jose Martinez who rushed out of his home to save the driver, a 34-year-old man. A second man, 29-year-old Devin Johnson, also helped by pulling the man away from the car.  "To say Jose's actions were heroic and brave are an understatement. Had he not taken immediate action, the driver would not have lived," the department wrote on Facebook. " Devin should also be commended for assuring the man was out of harm's way. Outstanding job, gentlemen." Patch Aurora reports that the driver was treated for burns and other non-life threatening injuries. He was charged with a DUI.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. OXON HILL, Md. -- For sisters Nikki Howard and Jaqi Wright, life comes down to a handful of ingredients.”Love, peace and cheesecake,” Wright said. It’s cheesecake that started them off on a new journey, while the two were furloughed during the federal government shutdown two years ago.“We went through the holidays just praying that it would let up,” Wright said. “And it didn't.”“So, for New Year's Eve service, I made sweet potato cheesecakes,” Howard said.Wright continued, “She gave them to me put it in the fridge. I had no idea, until I asked, ‘Who made those?’ And she said, ‘me.’”Howard said her mother and Wright began eating some of it, before her mom declared, “she said, ‘it's so good you can sell it,’ and light bulbs went off.”That is how their small business, called “The Furlough Cheesecake,” came to be. At first, they started by simply selling them online, but it quickly snowballed from there, right into area Walmart stores.“I had no idea that that one cheesecake would change everything,” Wright said. Now, they’re going a step further. At National Harbor near Washington, D.C. they just opened their first physical storefront.“So, we started our business during a furlough and we opened a store during a pandemic,” Wright said. “It makes us sound crazy, honestly, but it just happened this way.”They are fortunate. The pandemic is hitting many small businesses hard and Black-owned businesses especially so. According to data from the U.S. Census, compiled by economists at the University of California - Santa Cruz, between February and April, the number of African-American owned businesses dropped by 41%. Economists now estimate half of all African-American owned businesses may never reopen from their COVID-19 closures. At The Furlough Cheesecake, they know timing is everything.“We just took a leap of faith,” Wright said.Faith that has guided them through two – separate – tough economic times.“There's so many people out there struggling and suffering,” Howard said, “and being a minority-owned business, you know, we feel a responsibility to shed a good light on our community.”It’s all just one part of their unusual recipe for success. 2175
