DENVER, Colorado — Katherin Silvas has spent a lifetime wondering where she came from. When she was a baby, she was adopted.“You feel kind of alone,” Silvas said.She only knows a few things about her biological mother; she was 15 years old when she had Katherin, and she is from Kentucky."I even went to the extent of giving my biological mother a name. It can be incredibly powerful for those searching for their biological family, so we're going to be sending out 15,000 kits."DNA can connect people to anyone else who has already taken the test."Everyone receives matches. Whether you receive matches to your parents or siblings, it depends who's taking the test. Even if you don't as an adoptee get a match with the parent or the sibling you're looking for, we've seen so many cases where people have had a match with an uncle or even a second or third fourth cousin and it's through that match that they're able to close the loop," Mendelsohn said.One of the biggest concerns is privacy, people who've given up a baby for adoption who did so with an understanding that it would be completely private, not knowing that DNA technology years later could ignore that."For someone who may have over a long period of time built up expectations for whatever reunion would look like they would be very disappointed if it didn't go the way that they had hoped," said Ryan Hanlon with the National Council for Adoption. He thinks it can be problematic; some people don't want to be found and when people go looking it can end in heartache."For those instances where an individual doesn't want to be found or doesn't want to be connected to it can be disconcerting for them," Hanlon said.But others point to the examples of good outcomes times when people are able to reunite.That's why Silvas is looking forward to the possibility of finding her biological family even if there's a risk she will be disappointed."It's a need to feel connected with anyone else on this globe besides my daughter," she said. 3034

DENVER – Coloradans who don’t identify as simply male or female will soon be able to choose a third sex option on their driver’s license or identification card.The Colorado Department of Revenue announced that residents will have three options – M (male), F (female) and X – starting this month.The change in policy is to bring the state into better compliance following two court rulings at the state and federal level, the Division of Motor Vehicles’ Executive Director Michael Hartman told the Denver Post.“This is an important step for the state of Colorado that the state documents reflect our values,” Hartman told the Post. “People are people no matter their sex identification.”Hartman said the change will be a simple one and won’t cost taxpayers any money.In order to choose “X” for their sex on a driver’s license, a person will need to provide either a change of sex designation form signed by a licensed medical or behavioral health care provider or a birth certificate with an “X” sex designation. The change cannot be made online.California, Oregon, Minnesota, Maine and Washington, DC already offer a non-binary sex designation on driver’s licenses and ID cards. Licenses from those states with an “X” designation can be converted directly to a Colorado license with the “X” sex marker.The state said a license or ID card with the "X" designation will be compliant with the federal REAL ID standards.The state also is proposing allowing a third sex option on birth certificates following the settlement of a lawsuit that aimed to declare the state’s birth certificate policy unconstitutional because of its requirement that a person’s sex be surgically changed in order to alter the sex designation on a certificate.The new driver’s license and ID card policy goes into effect under an emergency rule on Nov. 30. DALLAS (AP) — Southwest Airlines says its workers must take pay cuts or face furloughs next year. Chairman and CEO Gary Kelly said Monday that unless the federal government gives airlines more money, Southwest will have to sharply cut spending to avoid losing billions of dollars every quarter until a coronavirus vaccine is widely available. Despite pleas from federal and local leaders to stay home for the holidays and keep gatherings to household members, the TSA screened nearly 1.2 million travelers Wednesday, a record high during the pandemic.According to TSA reports, 1,191,123 people were screened at TSA checkpoints at the country’s airports on December 23.
